Hey, thanks -- I will cite Inquests Corollary. I have invoked Nazizm before in discussions of euthanazia only to have Godwin's law thrown at me, when I was literally and with specific intent comparing actions taken in this country today with actions taken in Nazi Germany. I tried to explain the metaphor, but was shouted down.

Godwin's Law
Although the law does not specifically mention it, there is a tradition in many Usenet newsgroups that once such a comparison is made, the thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress. Godwin's law thus practically guarantees the existence of an upper bound on thread length in those groups.

It is considered poor form to arbitrarily raise such a comparison with the motive of ending the thread. There is a widely-recognized codicil that any such deliberate invocation of Godwin's law will be unsuccessful.
Given that you were the first to introduce the word Nazi into the thread, you automatically lose. Or you would if this was a Usenet thread.

Are you feeling hoist by your own petard just yet?

Just for the record, I would lay down Inquest's Corollary to that law, which is that you can do it without losing the debate, provided you can back it up with solid facts in making the comparison, but you're not even close to doing that here. It's just nothing but innuendo.

I would agree with this corollary.....that if there were any facts to back it up, the debate has not been lost.

But there is a chasm greater than the Grand Canyon between this poster's accusations and the facts.

The thing about this guy is........he's smart enough to know that he's off the deep end here, but is deliberately sinking farther. It's curious.

Naziism and Euthanasia are most definitively related. Making the comparison between killing the defenseless and what the Nazis did is completely accurate. (However, if you also said that America had become the same as Nazi Germany, that would be hyperbolic and innaccurate).

Admiration for a fellow Christian who has served with strength and honor as our President is not even close to what this poster accuses it of being.

Not at all. But I'm more than a little tired of those who like to bash away on principled conservatives, hounding them from thread to thread, then pout, threaten to leave the GOP, maybe even move to France, and then they want to act like those they abused endlessly and who held the line on conservative principle were somehow underhanded, vicious, ignorant, etc.

A lot of people know the little coterie at FR who have made this their modus operandi for years.

So what does that have to do with me? I have never bashed a conservative principle in my life.

And I don't know who you're talking about, nor have I seen evidence of the behavior you deliniate. I have, however, seen a whole lot of that behavior on the part of the 'purists' who threaten that this is the 'last straw' with President Bush, who bash Republicans incessantly, and who are mad at everything we stand for.

Could you be confusing the sides here, G?

Give it up, dude. The paragraph you quoted said nothing about the first person to use the word Nazi. It's about the first person to make the Nazi comparison, which you did with your "fuehrer" comment.

If you wish for the last word in this, you can have it, because it won't make a difference.

...Bush's next nomination is going to be very important, and I'm ready to put up as much of a fight as I did against Miers if this new nominee doesn't measure up. And because of Miers, the "Trust Bush" refrain is going to have even less credibility now....

Oh, absolutely!...but I assume, Bush will choose a proven conservative with a track record to bring our side together again (I hope he does try to bring the LEFT to his side!)... assuming he is mostly a conservative and an intelligent person. You can say anything you want about the first nomination.. and I can even give him the benefit of the doubt, because he might in fact have known Mrs Miers so well... he knew she was the one, but we all know the problems with this... trusting that much was just too much for many of us. You can also think of a number of excuses/situations why he miscalculated.

One thing is for sure, we'll finally find out what Bush is all about in less than three days! - Having a SECOND CHANCE and failing again, would be like exploding a nuclear device on his presidency... it's all up to him!

I hope so. One thing I'm nervous about (other than the possibility of him caving) is that he'll nominate someone whose chief qualification will be that the Dems don't like him, but on whom there will still be little publicly available information. The name that comes to my mind the most in such a scenario is Miguel Estrada. The Dems can't stand him, but mostly for reasons that have little to do with his views of the Constitution. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's mostly because he's so tightly connected with the administration, and doesn't want to make information available to them regarding his work with the administration.

What I can see happening is Bush nominating him, and the Dems filibustering, and doing it in the most childish manner, as per their standard procedure. Then, conservatives will be so incensed by their behavior that they'll want to do anything (like push the nuclear button) to get him confirmed, just as a way of sticking it to the Dems. But constitutional principle would just wind up being an afterthought.

If we're going to have a fight with the Dems (and I do want one), it needs to be over something important, not over some stupid partisan B.S. It needs to be over the Dems' whole hypocritical approach to the Constitution. That's why Janice Rogers Brown would be the perfect choice.

You know that the loyalty and admiration for President Bush ... is grounded in a love for the same Savior and Lord.

Many of the others of us, while truly serving the same Saviour, are better able to separate church and state.

It's beneath even you to wallow in slime like that.

Personal attacks are a diversion when helpful facts are not available.

Perhaps we can all pray for our President to make prudent choices predicated on principle rather than pragmatism.

Perhaps, then, we might unite and move forward with our faith, and the cherished spirit of Ronald Reagan, to guide us.

Perhaps, then, it really will be Morning in America.

Personal attacks are a diversion when helpful facts are not available.

What personal attack? The one where he accused us of adoring the Fuhrer, or the one where he accused me of being in a blue dress?

He's been in the slime, cary. Not me.

Good day, all. The sun is shining, I'm praying for our President as the Scripture commands, and no condescension on your parts will get me down. (Besides which, this thread was dead days ago).

Praise the Lord for this country, and praise the Lord for the man HE has chosen to lead us......George W. Bush. Amen!

Morning in America.....that it is!

ohio, my darling child! I do not think anyone has accused you of being in Monica's blue dress. LOL

I speak only for myself ... but, I believe many [if not most] of us are praying for our President.

I would never presume to speak for God; however, as I see it, God gave us all free will ... and it is we, not God, who chose George W. Bush to lead us.

We should all pray that our choice was a wise one and that, with God's will, it really will be Morning in America.
