He was. But note that outrage with the gang of 14 was also immediate.
DeWine discusses the agreement in a speech from the floor of the Senate on June 9, 2005. Generally affirming that the nuclear option is still on the table, and that what constitutes "extraordinary" has been circumscribed by at least the votes on Pryor, Brown and Owen.

Now, the article goes on to say--again, Dan Balz's article in the Washington Post--Senator Mark Pryor, [a Democrat and] another member of the group [of 14], concurred, saying that while he hopes the nuclear option is gone for the duration of the 109th Congress, circumstances could bring it back.
Quoting Senator Pryor:
I really think Senator DeWine and Senator Graham have it right.
McCain will definitely support Alito-he knows which side his bread is buttered on.
That's what I think as well. If they do go for it then it'll show that they're more divorced from reality than we thought.
That still leaves the arch-conspirator, the Cataline of the Republican party, the Quisling of the era John McCain.
As long as he is holding back, there are others in the gang of traitors who will attempt to foil the administration on this one.
McCain will get my vote for President when Hell freezes over. If he runs against Hillery, I will vote for an independent conservative.
McCain has been a thorn in the side of the administration since Bush got elected, always pressuring towards the left.

I have already decided that he gets no more votes from me, ever. If he is the Republican candidate for Senate next year, then I plan to vote for a conservative Senate candidate from some other party.
This is what I used to do with my children. If they were across the room and I told them to stop doing <whatever>, they had to stop it immediately to avoid getting a "swat". A number of times, they would keep on with it, just checking to see how serious I was. Once I moved to get up, they would immediately stop, but my rule was, "If I have to get up, it's too late."

Seriously folks. It seems like ending his son's political career was the right thing to do. Not only has DeWine come out strong for Alito he also voted FOR a Coburn Ammendment to cut wasteful spending like the bridge to nowhere last week.

I don't think Salazar will do much more than make noises if he has any interest at all in being reelected.
My favorite remark that I've seen regarding Salazar appeared in the local paper a while back. In a letter to the editor, a gentleman opined, regarding Salazar's discussions with Roberts, that John Roberts explaining constitutional law to Ken Salazar would make as much sense as Stephen Hawking explaining advanced physics to his Labrador retriever.
Almost had a coffee on the newspaper episode there.
The Dim's are screwed. It's finally dawning on them that they don't have diddly squat for influence anymore. The only tool they have in the Senate is the filibuster and that's only available to them as long as they don't use it. When they pull it out the GOP will take it away for good. I hope they DO filibuster.
Seeing your son get pasted in a recent primary election and facing a potentially tough race next year has a way of bringing one around, doesn't it?
I just sent another e-mail, encouraging him and thanking him for coming out so strongly for Alito. I figured it wouldn't hurt to keep his spine straight......
I've beeen VERY pleased with him so far. He came out quickly and solidly behind Alito.
Sorry I have to come back to my own post, but I negleted to mention perhpas the MAIN reason for all these good things.
