Congressman Murtha’s On-Line Survey

Please indicate which of the following best summarizes your view on what the United States should do in Iraq:

We should immediately remove all troops.

We should redeploy to the periphery of Iraq as soon as practical to protect troop safety and give the Iraqis incentive to take charge sooner, not later.

We should maintain current troop levels until Iraq builds an army to defend and stabilize their country, even if that takes years.

We should re-institute the national draft to increase troop levels to where we can seal the Iraqi borders and stop the passage of insurgents and insurgent-supply missions.

I think it doesn't have to be an "all or nothing" scenario and I wish the poll had additional options. We can turn over small portions of Iraq to complete Iraqi control and let their troops become more seasoned... let them sink or swim for awhile in that territory on their own. If it works, then we can turn over control of more territory, and draw down our troops or redeploy them to other areas. Taking this phased approach to Iraqi control would allow the Iraqi’s to immediately play a larger role in the future of their country and would ease the eventual transition to full Iraqi control. It would also allow us to continue with a major presence in the region for the foreseeable future while we keep an eye on Iran, Syria, and Pakistan.

I hope that after folks tell Murtha and Co. what they think, they'll stop by here to send a message to our troops -- all it takes is a freepmail to daybreakcoming:

Christmas Messages to the Troops

See #13 of that thread for another good idea.
