I find the various comments in this thread rejoicing at the death of another human being, who may in fact have been ill, a bit disturbing. As I said in my last post, I don't think the air marshals are liable--they can't just ignore a bomb threat in an airport. However, I fail to see why a man being mentally ill is cause for people to rejoice at him dying.
If it's true, and the man really as mentally ill, then the only thing that this story shows is that Bad Things happen.

Long bus ride from Colombia to Orlando...has the last stretch of highway connecting Colombia to Panama been built?
To: Graybeard58
A witness said the man frantically ran down the aisle and a woman with him said he was mentally ill.
Not any more, he's not.

Mental patients should be shipped by bus...or packed tightly in their white coats and sent by train. Or by Fedex.

Wolf Blitzed suggesting that the man might not have understood english, that it might be like the situation in London, and the man simply didn't understand the order to stop.

Bad things usually happen because of people who should be responsible are not. In this case it's the wife. Why would she ever let her husband on that flight, knowing his history as only she could know and knowing that her husband is off his meds. She's at least partially responsible for her husbands death.

There are mentally ill who refuse to take their medication--this is actually a very common problem with some forms of mental illness.
To: Flightdeck
Negligence. She knew that he was ill, knew he hadn't taken his medication, and still took the risk with his life and others. If he was not responsible for himself due to mental illness then she is his legal guardian and is responsible for him.

I find your naivete rather disturbing. Mentally ill people murder and maim others all the time.
Someone professing to have a bomb on an aircraft is not something we respond to with a mental evaluation.
We respond with deadly force if the threat is deemed serious.
