That crossed our minds too. But if that were the case, it seems they would have been accompanying/escorting the aircraft when we first saw it coming out of the east on it's westbound approach. These fighters appeared to be orbiting, at a higher altitude above the approach, waiting for the commercial aircraft to reach them, then they seemed to descend and followed in behind it.
Hmmm...wonder if we'll ever know?
And they wonder why Americans are getting tired of them. Hopefully they will not wake up anytime soon. Did you hear the Kerry quote which went something like, "American soldiers should not be going into Iraqis houses terrorizing women and children. The Iraqis should be doing that!" The man is insane...purely insane.
Here's a thought, and no tinfoil required:
Some areas often have multiple airports and even military air fields all under the same set of controllers. That's the way it works up here in Seattle, where SeaTac, Boeing field ~and~ McChord AFB are all under the purview of Seattle Center. It's likely true of the LAX area as well.
Military air going into local air fields would, out of necessity, have to coordinate patterns with commercial traffic. They'd be routed into the same approaches, especially if they are going to either the same place or a place nearby.
It is possible that the military jets were circling waiting for traffic to clear so they could get routed to their own approach.
The Kerry exchange (with Bob Schieffer):
And there is no reason, Bob, that young American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women, breaking sort of the customs of the--of--the historical customs, religious customs. Whether you like it or not...
SCHIEFFER: Yeah.
Sen. KERRY: ...Iraqis should be doing that.
Operation Noble Eagle is still in effect. There are still alert fighters out at March AFB...you can see them from the I215 south sitting under cover with the canopies open.
Norad will scramble them every once in a while at random....or scramble them if someone on the no fly list is determined to be on a plane over the US.
I am confident this had nothing to do with what we observed.
That would be a first for us, after many years at our location. Observed thousands of aircraft on this approach and we never saw anything like that. I don't have any answers.
It may have been just as you said.

Some good reading on Noble Eagle.
The news said the Air India plane left LAX at 8:30 pm and dumped fuel for 90 minutes over the ocean before landing around 10 pm.
Your sighting took place around 6:30 pm, right?
Strange night.
Current reports are saying there were problems with the landing gears, not just blown tires.
Wonder if the deplaning of passengers has been delayed because they're waiting for the FBI and HS to arrive.
Interesting evening.
We are confident that had nothing to do with our earlier observations regarding the military aircraft.
Here's the answer:

Sparks fly at LAX as 747 lands safely with faulty landing gear/tires
What we initially observed regarding the military aircraft had nothing to do with the Air India incident.
Thanks Jigsaw John. What a busy night in the skies.
I also explained to flying Elvis:
flying Elvis wrote: "Here's an earlier related thread. Mystery solved. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1543697/posts?page=1 Military aircraft following commercial airliner."
That would be a prescient case of military intelligence, remote viewing if you will, if these two incidents were at all related.
The Air India jet did not depart LAX until approximately 8:30 p.m. Your link went to a thread begun around 6:25 p.m.
Post 30
See 73.
I'll be staying in the rest of the evening.
Maybe this was some sort of a drill, perhaps a step-up in readiness training.
