Spain rebuffs U.S. on sale to Venezuela (Spain decides to sell weapons to Chavez)

Spain rebuffed Washington's appeal to refuse military sales to Venezuela, saying Friday it will sell the South American nation military boats and jets.

The United States has refused to grant a re-export license for the U.S. components of the Spanish aircraft and patrol boats that make up a proposed $2 billion deal, the Financial Times reported. In addition, the United States has asked Spain not to supply Caracas with arms.

But late Friday Spanish state radio quoted Defense Ministry sources in Madrid as saying the big military deal would go ahead and substitute technology would come from European sources.

btw... I'm still not happy with Spain's willingness to poke the USA in the eye for no reason.

We're likely to send Spain a few gadzillion dollars since they aren't worth that much anymore. Bush and State like to support the New World Order.

It's not like Spain is the only country ever to supply transport aircraft to a megalomanic expansionist dictator (USA. C-130B Hercules. Sukarno. 1960)

That was before I was born, and things have changed since 1989 (fall of USSR) and 2001 (9/11)... Our allies should not be helping our enemies in any way... no matter how small. Let Chavez buy from China and Cuba. My wife was born in Venezuela, and Chavez is screwing up a potentially prosperous country.

We are not at war with them now. But he is a guy we should keep a close eye on. Right now he is Castro the Lite version. But he has been getting rather cozy with China and Russia.

Let's get this straight..There is this thing called the Monroe Doctrine and I think our President knows want it means.

That the US avoids involvement in places like Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, in order to be free to interfere in the Latin Americas. (How's that worklng out?)

Not 1823 anymore.

True. But any military (should we go to war with them. May nto be necesary) travels not on food but logistics. Thats why I felt it was a bigger concern. But we would nail that stuff firs anyway so no biggie.

What's so bad about this deal? I'd rather see Chavez with Spanish military equipment instead of US. Maybe Guatemala will sell Chavez some tanks.

From European Sources means the French and Germans are probably at it again. I would bet this deal doesn't go through or is very much reduced in scope before it's all over.

I wouldn't fret. I suspect this stuff will end up as expensive targets when, and if, the situation warrants. Besides, wasting his money on this weaponry will make it less likely he'll have much maneuvering room in curtailing oil shipments - He'll need the revenue to pay for this stuff he won't know how to use.

"We should start sending bomb making supplies to the Basque separatists"

More that probably you've already done it since you've supplied guns to groups friendly to ETA like the Nicaraguans or the Afghanis.

Morocco is one of your "preferred allies" in the area and I don't think that's friendly to us either..

You sell guns to our enemies, we sell transport ships and planes to yours...

where's the problem? In fact, in my opinion we are far from the line that you crossed time ago... (that's selling things that actually kill)

re :Dont destablize our sphere of influence.

I have to admit this does make me laugh, because in real political terms American sphere of influence just about covers most of the globe. So no matter what anyone does there is always an American toe you may stand on.

You know or you wish?

"Dont destablize our sphere of influence."

If you get destabilized by some transport planes and ships then... aaah forget it, no one is being destabilized here, you simply just can't stand anyone going against your will.

By the way, just add one "l" to the insult you've thrown and you'll have yours...
