Guitarist Jimmy Page of the band Led Zeppelin has been voted the top guitar soloist of all time for the song Stairway to heaven.
According to contactmusic.com, Page's performance topped the survey held by the website aboutguitars.com and beat out the likes of Eddie Van Halen for the track Eruption.
The third place was occupied by the dual guitar solo by Allen Collins and Gary Rossington on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird.
The top 10 guitar solos are:
1. Stairway to heaven - Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
2. Eruption - Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)
3. Freebird - Allen Collins and Gary Rossington (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
4. Comfortably numb - David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)

7. One - Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
8. Hotel California - Don Felder and Joe Walsh (The Eagles)

Where's James Burton who could play circles around all 10 of these - at the same time?
Crazy Train is the best of all time. Rhodes was an afficianado. Who doesn't get absolutely fired up when those first couple of chords are played?
That was my favorite part of the movie Wayne's World.
Granted, his technique sometimes left a lot to be desired, but when you put it all together, Pagey's one of a kind. I'll, listen to him anyday. And the 25 or 6 to 4 lead? Lots of slop there I'm afraid. I don;t think Page's goal was to have perfect technique. Why does everyone want to lump all guitarists together as if they have the same style, background, etc. and see who is 'best'? It doesn't make sense.
And no Jeff Beck? (Guess I'm just not hip anymore)
I can think of at least two others that are better: Lindsay Buckingham in "I'm So Afraid" on the album "The Dance" and Jethro Tull's guitar slinger (Martin Barre?) on the song "Aqualung."

Agree Seen AD once incredible. but the list should be expanded. I'll take Alvin Lee Ten Years after "I'm Going Home" Woodstock performance!
I agree. Hard to argue with any of them, but the list is too predictable. How about these instead?

maybe it was just the order i heard things in, but that solo redefined what rock guitar was for me in a lot of ways.

Ever hear the version of Pipeline that he did with Dick Dale? Golden.
Point accepted about Chet Atkins, even though I think he rocks. How about Alvin Lee (Ten Years After) in "Goin' Home" at Woodstock? Now, that was a "high flying rock solo".
Well now there is two of us. I listen to him all the time.
