Best guitar riff ever is a toss up between Can't You Hear Me Knocking and The Ocean.

That's true. John Mclaughlin never seems to get props, and he's the master. Because he only flirted with rock. Speaking of,what about Steve Howe of "Yes"?

I always found that Page, like Ritchie Blackmore's stuff in Deep Purple (but not with Rainbow), was sloppy and derivative. I also have something against "showboating" ie when a guitarist's solo purposely overwhelms the song. One reason I believe that Harrison was underrated is that every solo he had actually FIT THE SONG, rather than detract from it like Jimmy Page or Eddie Van Halen's work. Its very similar to pairing a strong Cabernet with white fish.

Of course, you can argue to Clapton did some showboating with Cream, who were a "blues rock jam: band anyway. Nevertheless, even Clapton (as a solo artist and with the Yardbirds) knew how to keep his solos from overwhelming the song.

"virtuosos like Leo Kottke "

He's a joy to watch play. I've seen him half a dozen times. Trouble is, he's funny lookin' and can't sing worth a lick. He's got some hellacious guitar chops, though.

Saw Frank do Muffin Man on two different occasions at Armadillo World Headquarters here in Austin. The second time was the last show at the Dillo.

The song on the record called Captain Beefheart was recorded live at the Dillo and it ranks way above the top ten.

Absolutely incredible.

No Yngwe? Eddie has a lot better solos than Eruption.

At least Randi Rhodes is in there.

Proof that all opinions here are completely subjective - 59 posts and no mention of STEVE HOWE..

Some things can't easily be compared. for example if you are comparing technique, then page, harrison, clapton. and most of those mentioned wont' make the list.

Malmsteen, van halen, de miola, there's the list for technique. Want a list of jazz influenced, blues influenced, studio layered guitar techniques, then we're looking at a different list.

Where's James Burton who could play circles around all 10 of these - at the same time?

Exactly!
