Russia to meet pledge on air defense system deliveries to Iran

MOSCOW, Feb. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- Russia will meet its pledge on deliveries of air defense systems to Iran, a senior official said on Thursday.

Moscow cut a 1 billion-U.S. dollar deal with Tehran in November to supply it with Tor-M1 short-range missiles. Russian officials said these missiles are air defense systems used only to bring down aircraft and guided missiles at low altitudes but cannot strike ground targets.

"As you know, we have a contract on the delivery of anti-aircraft missile systems to Iran. There is no reason not to fulfill this contract," Mikhail Dmitriev, director of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.

Under the deal, Russia will supply up to 30 systems which will be used to defend the most important state and military facilities, above all nuclear facilities in Isfahan, Bushehr, Teheran and in the country's east, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has said the contract was concluded "in strict compliance with Russian laws and Russia's international obligations."

Dmitriev said the Middle East region remains a big regional market where Russia enjoys considerable possibilities for arms export. "We have long enjoyed good partnership relations with the United Arab Emirates, Syria and Egypt," he said.

Those systems will make no difference at all. These are short range missiles. We can drop JDAMs on Iran from 30K feet from 20 miles away from the targets. These weapons would only be barely effective against cruise missiles launch for low altitude attacks against Iran's command and control network.

Nah the US government knows what russia is up to. The US puts the diplomatic face on as does the UK. The UK was caught spying recently in Russia. We are not the only country worried about the path they are taking.Without the US in their way russia and china could bully europe and the rest of the world with impunity. They know this and we know this. The US stands up to bullies no matter how big and bad they are. Same old shyte from the cold war just a differant century with the same people acting like they have a new face.False perestroika.

If Europe has half a brain, they ought to hang close to the U.S. or else be engulfed by the Russians/Chinese.

Tor M1 9M330 Air Defense System

The TOR-M1 surface-to-air missile system is a mobile, integrated air defense system, designed for operation at medium-, low- and very low –altitudes, against fixed/rotary wing aircraft, UAVs, guided missiles and precision weapon. The system is capable of operating in an intensive aerial jamming environment. The system is comprised of a number of missile Transporter Launcher Vehicle (TLV). A Russian air defense Tor battalion consists of 3 - 5 companies, each equipped with four TLVs. Each TLV is equipped with 8 ready to launch missiles, associating radars, fire control systems and a battery command post. The combat vehicle can operate autonomously, firing from stationary positions or on the move. The each fire unit can engage and launch missiles against two separate targets.

Yeah greece has already let the US scour over their tor system. They are also buying new f-16's from us. They have the exact same system. Trust me a massive cruise missle strike followed by fixed wings dropping jdams at high altitudes would = dead air defense.

A massive wave of low flying predators could empty the launchers... or pinpoint their position.

May I suggest that we covertly reestablish subversive groups inside of mother Pussia.

...if that doesn't work simply threaten to establish relations and military liasons with Chechnya.

Thank goodness for the cruise missile. We are going to be needing a LOT of these.

"Then allow me to help. Visualize Chechen nuclear weapons"

This is a highly accurate statement and emphasizes that the Russian learning curve from it's Afghanistan experiences is rather flat.

Then again we have to remember that the Russkies don't give a rat's ass for their own population in Chechnya, when it comes to oil flowing North into Russia from Iran.

Quote: The missile is also effective against precision guided weapons and cruise missiles. In tests the missile demonstrated kill probability of such targets ranging from 0.6 to 0.9.( See http://www.defense-update.com/products/t/tor.htm )

The TOR system is effective under ideal conditions; a diversionary air srike from jets would allow cruise missles to fly into their key holes, BUT would the TOR stop fighter bombers trying to deliver Bunker Buster Bombs?

We can use Tactical Nukes on the first cruse missiles to totally wipe out their air defenses (and anything that is near it) We should also use Strategic nukes on the nuclear sites. It is the only way to insure that we do the job.

The amount of fantasy scenarios and underestimating that goes on here is disturbing. Like it or not, our politicians are simply not going to authorize a nuking of Iran.

The TOR-M1 is defense against Israel. It can cause problems against the F-16I's which is exactly why their defense minister has required them to be ready to go by March, before Iran takes delivery of the mobile system.

Cruise missles are a possibility for us (or allies) however, which is why Iran is hot after Russia's S-300V (and variants), the premier anti-missle unit capable of shooting down cruise missles and ballistic missles in some variants, much better than the Patriot. We've apparently tried to buy it from Russia over the years. Now Iran is either negotiating for them, or may already have some.

So if we're going to strike with some non-nuke surgical strikes, it has to be fairly soon, because once they get these systems operational, it's gonna be alot more difficult
