Cartoons depict Jesus, cause stir at Radford University
Roanoke Times ^ | 2/25/2006 | Greg Esposito

He's made his points with images of a cartoon Jesus being stabbed by Santa Claus, playing poker with other religious figures (including Muhammad), punching a heckler who referred to him as a "glorified Easter bunny" and wondering if he has the requisite male body part during a sexual encounter with a woman.

Those depictions have sparked anger among many students, both Christians and non-Christians, and concern among administrators.

In a statement Friday, Vice President for Student Affairs Norleen Pomerantz said a meeting between student affairs and student media about how to balance First Amendment rights while maintaining good taste will be held sometime next week.

The magazine is affiliated with the university and funded through student fees. But the university exercises no editorial control over it.

A photographer snapped a picture of one Bible-toting Christian militant calling for action against the blasphemy of the university personnel.

Now this is truly a intimidating sight. Take a look into those eyes!

Grandma with her Bible!

I heard the Amish were tearing down the haystacks and setting buggies on fire! Luckily, they are not slitting the throats of the horses as they did in the last cartoon riot. ;)

Okay, I'm a Christian, and as I read the descriptions of the cartoons, I find them not so much offensive as just plain stupid.

From the article:

"One cartoon, a parody of the famous painting of dogs playing poker, is an equal opportunity offender. It shows leaders of four religious groups (Muhammad, Buddha, Jesus and Vishnu) playing poker with the devil in a battle for souls."

"At the very mention of his name ..."

I just love it when non-Christians speak the name of Jesus. They have no idea what they're doing.

The best way to preserve First Amendment rights to publish this tripe and to maintain one's integrity is for the individuals/parents who are subsidizing this publication via "student fees", which is a euphemism for tuition, is to contact the Board of Regents and insist that the use of tuition money should be scrutinized much more closely lest students elect to transfer to colleges that invest in academic excellence rather than lame attempts at crude, anti-religious humor.

< Little do they know, some churches actually pass that view off as serious theology!

He made a great point. You haven't seen a single Christian country recall their ambassadors over this. You haven't seen a single person die. The cartoonist doesn't have a million dollar bounty on his head. He made a very good point, IMO just not the one he thought he was making.

Uh oh, here come the rioting and murdering Methodists, Catholics, Lutherans, Espicopalians, Amish etc! Run for your lives!

Hey, don't laugh...some of the nuns I had in elementary school could probably take out Al Qaeda and have them doing the stations of the cross by the 3:05 bell..

"Done is done, ignore it,"

I'll pass that suggestion along to Embassies in the Muslim world next time they have a mob bomb-toting raghead loons outside their gates.
