I see the kids with those WWJD bracelets. They're not in the Bible, but I'm sure some teenagers are reminded of Christ's love and perfection by those bracelets and a result do not engage in the sin which is all around them.

If a Baptist Pastor said that all kids were obligated to wear the bracelets, I wouls have a problem.

Of course, looking back on it, my wifes' Catholic parents are not too happy with that decision. Now my entire family is Baptist. While committing to read the Bible over Lent did not result in my immediate turning Christ, it definately played a part....

As a Catholic parent, I can honestly say I would rather have my children be fervent Christian Baptists, than lukewarm Christian Catholics. (Not that I wouldn't be praying for their reversion, mind you).

I'm sure there are many Catholic folks on these boards who disagree with that sentiment, and I suppose your in laws do too, but really nothing breaks my heart more than a cradle Catholic who has completely fallen away from Christ. I would be greatly comforted by a child's faith in Our Lord.

As Catholics, we're only obligated to abstain from meat on Fridays, and fast on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday. That's not what this thread is about. This thread is about the popular Christian custom of choosing something we love and giving it up during Lent.

Fasting in fact feeds your spiritual being. I always find it daunting before and insufferable during. In my case I usually give up drinking. When I have that first drink after Lent it's never as satisfying as my urge during Lent. It's usually at that point when I realize that God was with me the whole time during my abstinence. It's a very spiritual experience.

Maybe a self-proclaimed godless atheist could give up posting in religious threads? Attention whore.

I think it might have been part of the early Church preparation of catechumens for baptism at the Easter Vigil.

I asked in post 266 if this was an obligation for Catholics. I haven't gotten a reply yet.

sick, sick , sick, I will pray for you this Lent, the Church is the only thing left in my life worth fighting for, I was raised Catholic, went away from the church, came back, and so glad I did, that , no matter what church , is a testimony to God that He will not forget, you will see at your life review, I had a ndexp, I wouldn't go so far as to play right in the hands of the devil, rethink your statement

Sorry, didn't see that. The only Lenten obligations we have in addition to our normal obligations as Catholics are to abstain from meat on Fridays and Ash Wednesday and to Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

From the EWTN website, it states that it is a "mandatory tradition" for those who wish to follow the Roman Catholic tradition.

They do clearly state that it is a man-created tradition, not a doctrinal mandate and subject to numerous exceptions (age, illness (e.g., diabetic), prison, bootcamp, etc).

Can that be translated as "It is a sin to not comply"?
