"If I were in the Bush Administration I would highly recommend ousting Scott McClellan from Press Secretary and instead go with a "pool of press reps" and have people like General Peter Pace, General Honore, Russ Limbaugh, VP Dick Cheney, and Rudy Guiliani each take the job 1 day per week. These are all great first responders to the idiot media we currently have and would enhance the administrations job tremendously!"

A while back on an FR thread, I have personally asked fellow freeper "holdonnow" to take over Scott's "job".

....Freeper "holdonnow" has yet to reply one way or the other.......

I will use this post to ask again....Please fellow freeper "holdonnow", take Scott's "job" if it's offered !! Your country needs you!!

PS:...if freeper "holdonnow" was press secretary, I'd even pay to watch the daily briefings on PPV....

I'm sure others can provide specifics, but my memory is New Orleans did go through at least one, and maybe two, practice scenarios, including one with flooding from a levee breech. They KNEW they were not prepared and they knew areas that would fail. Between the corruption in both New Orleans and Louisiana governments, there was no incentive to change anything. Too many key players were making too much money off the federal and state programs. Add in political pandering to environmental groups that were suing to stop better levee construction, and the whole thing really was a recipe for disaster.

It leads me to believe they know what they are saying is untrue but saying if for effect, to make themselves look as if they are being holier than thou to their voters.

Helllooo - this has been going on for at least the last 3 years full throttle.

Sadly, a lot, like Specter called for an investigation before even checking things out with President Bush first.

Clearly congress, at least the current one, want to be in charge of the Bush Administration and believe he should check with them on EVERYTHING before GWB should proceed on his own. Separation of powers very much under attack here IMHO.

Interesting article that's not too kind to Hill and the Dims. Looks like someone in Dubai knows what we know about the Dims (they want to turn America into France) and GWB:

"What are the lessons for the UAE and the whole world from this episode? First off — character matters. George Bush — like or despise him — is a man of principle."

Meet the Clintons in and out of the UAE
Khaleej Times ^ | March 4, 2006 | BILL O BRIEN & MATEIN KHALID

Posted on 03/05/2006 9:56:24 AM PST by TheLion

MANY residents of UAE thought — mistakenly as it turns out — that they knew the Clintons. Former president Bill and former co-president/current New York Senator Hillary were deemed to be friends of the UAE — and the Arab world in general.

While Hillary hadn’t visited the UAE recently, Bill is a regular — at least when he’s invited for a paid speech or appearance. Sometimes, he’s graced us in person — other times via a video conference. President Bush, everyone agreed, was an anti-Arab cowboy, worthy of little more than derision.

(Excerpt) Read more at khaleejtimes.com ...

Here are some additional comments from the article:

"Other members of the travelling anti-Bush Democratic Party roadshow have also popped into the UAE for a paid appearance or two. Former VP candidate John Edwards honoured us with his wisdom last year as did the woman best remembered by many for opposing the 1991 liberation of Kuwait, ex-secretary of State Madeline Albright, who flew in last December.

So, with the announcement of the Dubai Ports World deal, UAE residents could be forgiven if they expected the Clintons would, at a minimum, resist joining the more extreme chorus of xenophobes, ultra-hawk Republicans and union controlled coastal region Democratic Party politicians in the current round of race-based protectionism ... right?

Nope. In fact, Team Clinton and practically all members of the Democratic Party royalty have gone into overdrive to oppose the deal. The most dangerous place to be over the past few weeks has been to stand between Hillary and a news camera eager for more commentary on how dangerous this whole deal really was, and how George Bush was absolutely cavalier with the security of the American homeland.

Specifically, the lady liberals like to call America’s smartest woman said: “Our port security is too important to place in the hands of foreign governments,” in a statement posted to her web site. “I will be working with (New Jersey) Senator (Robert) Menendez to introduce legislation that will prohibit the sale of ports to foreign governments.” None of the assembled reporters (the US mainstream Press is pretty much an appendage of the Democratic Party) bothered to ask if the deal involved DPW buying the US Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security — as her bizarre statement would seem to imply."

>snip

Yes indeed, thanks Bill and Hill. Oh by the way, where was the ‘maximum control’ and opposition to ‘foreign government’ approach when the Clintons allowed the Chinese Government-controlled companies to get control of terminals on the US West Coast? When reporters queried the Clinton Administration’s Press Office in the late 90s about a Chinese firm getting control of the Panama Canal operations, the reply was the administration viewed the fury over port control as ‘silly stuff’.

What are the lessons for the UAE and the whole world from this episode? First off — character matters. George Bush — like or despise him — is a man of principle. He knows the UAE is a friendly nation and firmly believes relations between the US and UAE should reflect a mature partnership. President Bush is taking a major hit from his base and from the independent voters who are critical to future electoral success for the Republican Party. But he’s sticking to his guns…and has threatened what would be the first veto of his entire term of office if the Congress overturns the deal.

Secondly — the Democratic Party — and their allies in organised labour are, at heart, protectionists. Want to know how they really see things? Think France. Big government, powerful government worker unions, maximum insulation from foreign intrusions, national industrial champions, and the use of any device to somehow wish away globalisation and competition. The Longshoremen’s Union that got Hillary all energised is best remembered for a Christmas season industrial action at the Port of Long Beach approximately two years ago. They were against barcodes.

Third and most important. The Clintons are in favour of…..surprise!....the Clintons. When Hillary got the call from her Longshoremen Union sponsors/donors — that pretty much answered things for her. Better yet — it turns out that President Bush is politically isolated on this one which makes a bit of demagogy all the more attractive. The UAE, sadly, moves in to the Clinton category of ‘not currently useful’ to the constant campaign and as a tough old American political observer once said.

One of Bill Clinton’s less than enamoured female acquaintances, Katherine Willey, recounted that after a somewhat spirited, and by her account, not entirely consensual encounter, the future President noted she had a swollen lip. In a fairly cold tone, he suggested she “put some ice on that.” Perhaps, the former first family will offer similar advice to their disappointed fans in the UAE."

I would love for him to be on with Tony,Rush,Sean(if he can accept criticism), or any number of Conservative Talk Show Hosts. Even Rush would hold back on saying a lot of what he said, so when Rush reads it over the Air and attributes it to someone else,he cannot be blamed for the harsher (but very true) things said in the piece, and it will really get it out in the Mainstream and not just in a secondary Augusta, Ga Newspaper.

It is my understanding that Pace did an outstanding job of counterpoint to Timmy's DNC talking points.

Yes he did. However, it is infuriating to each week watch and see that the questions and questioner are not even-handed. And with the exception of guests like General Pace, Tim gets away with it. One who didn't let Tim or the other guests slide with their accusations and half-truths was Mary Matalin who appeared a few weeks ago after the Cheney shooting.

Mistakes like this drive me up the wall. The "put some ice on it" was directed to Juanita Broadrick after the Clinton rape.

Willie was the one where old Bill put her hand on his crotch as she was turning to him for help because of family financial problems, just before her husband committed suicide.

The port deal is raising awareness of how our ports are operated. It is strange, that under the toon, no one objected to China being given that authority.

COSCO was a big issue, and AFAIK, COSCO still isn't operating any terminals. They are landing lots of freight however.

We are also hearing that only 5% of containers are being checked. The voices saying that 100% are checked from the EXIT port is not being heard.

Depends on what "checked" means. I'm still looking for corroboration for the assertion that 100% are scanned for radiation. 100% landing at Oakland are (supposed to be), but the (not yet passed) Department of Homeland Security Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006 recites an allocation of funds for a DEMONSTRATION program.

SEC. 306. SECURITY OF MARITIME CARGO CONTAINERS.

(d) Container Security Demonstration Program.--
(1) Program.--The Secretary is authorized to establish and carry out a demonstration program that integrates radiation detection equipment with other types of nonintrusive inspection equipment at an appropriate United States seaport, as determined by the Secretary.
(2) Requirement.--The demonstration program shall also evaluate ways to strengthen the capability of Department of Homeland Security personnel to analyze cargo inspection data and ways to improve the transmission of inspection data between appropriate entities within the Department of Homeland Security.

The Chair recognizes the gentleman from Mississippi (Mr. Thompson).

Mr. THOMPSON of Mississippi. Madam Chairman, I yield myself such time as I may consume.

Madam Chairman, I appreciate the work of the gentleman from California (Mr. Cox) to include many Democratic suggestions in this bill, and I want to say that most of the provisions in his bill are good ones.

But the truth is that this bill does not address a large number of dangerous security gaps. For example, this bill does not close serious security gaps in chemical plants, aviation, railroads, passenger trains and railroads, buses, border security, the ability of first responders to communicate in an emergency, the importance of protecting privacy, and a whole host of other areas where we must improve security. This bill does not even mention chemical plants or airports. How can we call this an authorization bill?

My substitute, Madam Chairman, addresses all of these areas, and more. First, the substitute makes funding for homeland security a priority. The President's budget and this bill does not fulfill the commitment we made in the 9/11 Act the President signed into law in December, but this substitute meets those challenges.

For example, for just a mere $92 million called for in the 9/11 Act, we could install radiation portal monitors in every port of entry in this country. My substitute offers solutions where the bill does not give the answers. For example, it protects our borders by requiring DHS to put technology in place to ensure that every mile of the border is monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It protects our ports by authorizing new port security grants. It protects airlines and prevents hijackings by installing new, in-line baggage screening systems that work better and faster. And, in an area where I strongly disagree with the chairman, we fully sponsor the development of research on how to counter shoulder-fired missiles that terrorists can use to shoot down a plane.

Mr. LANGEVIN. Mr. Chairman, I rise in strong support of Ranking Member Thompson's substitute amendment.

While H.R. 1817 takes important steps in improving our security and preparedness, it simply does not go far enough. ...

Now, as ranking member of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Nuclear and Biological Threats, I am particularly pleased to note that the Democratic substitute would provide for the installation of radiation portal monitors at all ports of entry. This is a key step in our efforts to keep dangerous materials out of our borders.

29 . DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY AUTHORIZATION ACT ...
(House of Representatives - May 18, 2005)

As noted above, H.R. 1817 has not yet passed. Its status as of May 19, 2005 is, "Referred to Senate committee: Received in the Senate and Read twice and referred to the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs."

The WH administration is not entirely happy with the proposed funding authorization.

EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET
WASHINGTON, D.C. 20503
May 18, 2005

The Administration supports House passage of H.R. 1817. However, the Administration has a number of serious concerns regarding provisions in H.R. 1817 that would conflict with the President's Budget, interfere with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary's management authorities, and hinder the Department's ability to implement its various missions. The Administration looks forward to working with the Congress to address these and other concerns before any final action on this legislation.

While the aggregate level of appropriations authorizations in H.R. 1817 is closely aligned with the President's Budget, the bill includes several program-specific authorization levels that are not consistent with the Budget. Discrepancies of particular concern include insufficient funding for the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office and for Targeted Infrastructure Protection grants. The Administration urges that authorization offunding for these programs be consistent with the President's Budget.
