Senator Is Summoned to Court on Coffee-Throwing Charge

ALBANY, March 23 A summons was issued on Thursday for State Senator Ada L. Smith of Queens, ordering her to appear in criminal court here next month to answer charges that she threw hot coffee in the eyes of a member of her staff.
The staff member, Jennifer Jackson, charged in a complaint that Senator Smith threw the coffee and pulled a hairpiece from her head on Tuesday morning, causing injuries to her eyes, shoulder and back, according to court papers.
The complaint accused Senator Smith of third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.
Senator Smith, a nine-term Democrat, denounced the accusations as lies in a statement she issued on Wednesday, and suggested that they were politically motivated.
A summons was issued ordering her to appear in court on April 6. Sgt. Kern Swoboda, a spokesman for the state police, said the summons would be sent by mail.
Senator Smith has been in trouble with the police before. She was convicted of speeding past a security checkpoint at a garage here in 2004. And she was accused of biting a New York police officer in Brooklyn in 1998, a charge she denied, saying that the officer had roughed her up.
