Hey, Miz!
Couldn't resist stopping by to see what folks are saying. So this occurred in your backyard, so to speak? I'm with you, I just want him punished. But I agree with those who say his blog was just absolutely screaming that he was seriously depressed. He reminds me of a relative of mine who acts similarly (well, not the cannibalism), but he does absolutely nothing to fix his bad situation.
OTOH, what some people might not realize is that such a depression is a Catch-22. One of his symptoms was that awful listlessness, which paralyzes you and and keeps you from acting to fix the problem.
Again, disclaimer, no excuse, let him fry. He's clearly not legally insane, and I highly doubt his blog is any sort of advance legal ploy. If it were, he seems smart enough to have done a much better job setting up a defense.
Another disclaimer, I do not blame the mother, but I am a little surprised she didn't realize he really needed help. Maybe she's from that school of thought that psychotropic drugs are evil; people should "just pull themselves up by their bootstraps."

One of the tendencies I see in this area (I'm a transplant here) is the avoidance of doctors, especially the menfolk. It just about takes a near-death experience to get them to see a doctor.
That might be part of it--or it might be that it was his decision not to seek more help, and being an adult, it would have been difficult to force him.
I noted that he pled "Not Guilty" so it does appear there's an insanity plea in his future.
