Russia says no to sanctions against Iran

Russia has insisted it is opposed to moves by the United States and its allies to impose sanctions against Iran. At a meeting in Moscow, Russian officials met delegates from the US, Britain, France, Germany and China to discuss the latest moves in Iran's disputed nuclear programme. Afterwards Russian spokesman Mikhail Kamynin insisted that neither the sanctions route nor the use of force would lead to a solution of the problem.

In Washington, the Bush administration says further action is needed. White House spokesman Scott McLennan said: "Violations and failures by the regime to comply with its international obligations run contrary to the regime's claims that its nuclear programme is solely for peaceful purposes". The United Nations security Council has given Teheran until 28 April to stop work on making enriched uranium.

However Iran has defended its right to continue the programme which it says is for peaceful purposes. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared at an army parade the country would defend itself against any attack.

Russia has oil, what do they care about Iran. As long as they continue to harass us.

Possibly some bonehead in the Kremlin is still entertaining the age-old Russian pipedream of a port on the Arabian Sea.... and, of course, there's all that Persian Gulf oil. Probably, however, it's enough just to thumb their noses at the West; to be obstructionist; and to throw a monkey wrench into the workings of civilization. The latter has always seemed enough for the Russians; it's certainly enough for the Chinese.

"The United Nations security Council has given Teheran until 28 April to stop work on making enriched uranium."

Or it'll give them to 28 MAY to stop work on making enriched uranium. And then, if they STILL don't stop...it'll give them until 28 JUNE, maybe even JULY. That'll fix their little Islamist wagons! /sarc

If Russia cannot even agree to sanction Iran, given present day circumstances, it is time to either retire the United Nations or at least remove Russia from the Security Council.

The League of Nations is just as useless today with Russia on the Security Council as it was when Lenin was still wasting oxygen.

We are following the same track with Iran as the 70s.

Except this time we don't have a Jimmy Carter in office.

The smart money is strapping itself in by acquiring hard assets like gold because it will be a wild ride.

Pretty much. Despite their protestations of other ideas, I don't see Russia offering a solution to the problem, do you? I think Iraq basically showed the UN is as useless as any institution can be.

Now the left will insist we can't do anything because the UN doesn't approve.

"...the nuclear facility at Brushehr, Iran is being built under an agreement between the Russian and Iranian governments for $800-million." globalsecurity.org/

"Russia has signed a deal with Iran to sell 29 of its Tor M-1 anti-missile systems, a development that will complicate any planned pre-emptive attack on the rogue nation's nuclear facilities, reports Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin."

"Tula KBP, a (Russian) state-owned company making anti-aircraft and anti-missile devices, has been banned from doing business with the US and US companies for a year for selling the laser-guided Krasnopol M artillery shells to Iran." taipeitimes.com/

"Russia's weapons sales to Iran are purely for defensive purposes, a government spokesman said Saturday, in response to reports that Russia was selling $1 billion worth of weapons to Iran." Fox News

"Russia is clearly playing a double game. On the one hand, Lavrov and Putin do not want to create undue tension between Moscow and Washington, so they maintain the ploy of civil negotiations. On the other, they want to ensure that Iran has enough time to complete its nuclear weapons plans."

"How do we know this? Because the Iranians themselves make no bones about their strategy. Former Iranian nuclear negotiators Hassan Rouhani and Hosein Musavian have both said publicly that the three years Iran gained through its negotiations with the IAEA since late 2002 have allowed it to complete a key uranium conversion plant and to build hundreds of enrichment centrifuges in secret."
