Major groups of local Latinos oppose boycott
The Cleveland Plain Dealer ^ | 4/30/2006 | Robert L. Smith

Posted on 04/30/2006 4:09:22 PM PDT by EBH

Across America, Latino communities are split over whether to join or ignore Monday's "Great American Boycott," which asks immigrants and their supporters to refuse to work, study or shop as a way to show their support for immigration reform.

But in Northeast Ohio, major Latino groups are presenting a united front.

They oppose the controversial strategy and are angry that some groups are encouraging children to skip school. The region will see some demonstrations and forums on what's being billed as "A Day Without Immigrants." Some businesses and factories will close Monday, either in solidarity with the effort or in anticipation of staff shortages.

But local Latino organizations most active in the pro-immigrant campaign plan to boycott the boycott.

They are telling their supporters to ignore the day...

...Veronica Isabel Dahlberg, executive director of HOLA, the Hispanic Organizations of Lake and Ashtabula. "Why can't they use their voices to urge kids to graduate?"

Maybe the two differing groups could just meet in the middle of Main Street and beat the crap out of each other.

Maybe their is hope:

Excerpt:

They are telling their supporters to ignore the day or to approach it differently.

"I think it's a terrible idea for Latino leaders to tell kids to stay home from school," said Veronica Isabel Dahlberg, executive director of HOLA, the Hispanic Organizations of Lake and Ashtabula. "Why can't they use their voices to urge kids to graduate?"

The Rev. Jesus Laboy echoes those sentiments in Cleveland. He is co-founder of the Coalition of Latino Pastors of Northeast Ohio, which represents about 60 Latino Protestant churches and their 3,000 members.

He and other Spanish-speaking pastors have been telling the faithful that the boycott sends the wrong message at the wrong time.

So, now they're refusing to study? From what I see at school, this isn't new. They're usually the biggest trouble makers. Think of all the free breakfasts and lunches they'll be missing.

I wouldn't say "hope". They did it the way they really wanted to in the first protests. Mexican flags, Viva Mexico, Stolen land, etc. That didn't go over too well. They've smartened up a little. Not enough to stop the boycott of course. They support the boycott, they just know it will not be appreciated by the gringos.

Kudos to Americans who happen to be from Mexico: hard working, honest, patriotic, law-abiding.

Illegal Mexican nationals: no `amnesty', go home.

People aren't monolithic. It's communist ANSWER that's behind the socialist glorification of demanding benefits.

Backlash could be to redefine welfare benefits only for US citizens. Effective immediately.
