What Did You Like About Former President Reagan?

What did president Reagan do that made him one of the greatest conservative icons in American history? Personally, I did not agree with some of his moves but his cutbacks on the size of the federal government made sense to me.

But what about you?

People trusted Reagan because Reagan was not condescending towards the American people, and Reagan trusted the American people, and trusted and had confidence of the American people to get us through any problems we were facing or through any situation.

Simply put ( you can make this out of a bumper sticker or tag line ) ( Reagan trusted and depended on the American people to get us through instead of the Democrats/Liberals having the people trusting and depending on the government )

America is the people, not the government.

I liked President Reagan because he was a good negotiator. He knew that in order to be a good negotiator, you have to be willing to walk away from the table. In the above picture, Reagan is walking away from the table because Gorbachev wanted him to give up SDI, and Reagan said no.

We were blessed to have them at that time and juncture in history, and it was by God's providence that we had them to be our guardians in the 1980s.

In a Vietnam movie about a battle a Vietnam General once said : you gain honor by the courage of your enemy.
Even though Gorby and the Russian didn't like Reagan's answer, they admired him and respected him for his courage to say no to them.

I believe that both President Reagan and President Bush are truly great and historic American leaders.

I will never understand why people within the Republican party choose to contrast these men.

We should rejoice that we've had them both.

He was a strong communicator who I grew up watching and respecting for his dignity and good humor. I also remember something about he and Tip O'Neil having drinks after hours together even though they were in opposition politically. I think that's correct. My memory is a bit hazy, as I was 10 years old then or younger.

Same here. Reagan is the first memory I have of a president. I loved seeing him on TV, even though I didn't really know what was going on at the time. He seemed like a great leader who was a force for good in the world.

Even though Gorby and the Russian didn't like Reagan's answer, they admired him and respected him for his courage to say no to them. You are right and I know Gorbachev respected Reagan. Also, Gorbachev said that he knew he was beat when Reagan stood his ground.

Yes, I figured as much. And I didn't want to say it because it isn't funny and I am not making fun, but I don't think he could sit up very straight as he aged.
