Voters in the town of Herndon, Virginia delivered a stunning rebuke today to elected officials who opened a taxpayer funded day labor center for illegal aliens in the town last year. Incumbent mayor Michael O'Reilly lost to Steven DeBenedittis while five of the six at-large town council seats went to candidates opposing the day labor center.
Town Council winners are Bill Tirrell, incumbent Dennis Husch, Connie Haines-Hutchison, Charlie Waddell and Dave Kirby.
Only one of three incumbents on the council who supported the day labor center won re-election, J. Harlan Reece. The other two who went down in defeat were Carol Bruce and Steven Mitchell. Day labor center supporter Jorge Rochac also lost.
With its proximity to Washington, D.C., Herndon has captured national attention as a focal point of the debate over border security and the millions of illegal aliens lving and working in communities all across the country.
The local election came one day after a nationwide protest and boycott effort in support of legalizing illegal aliens.
Turnout in the election was higher than in past years, at 26%. The margin of defeat for the incumbent mayor was 130 votes out of 2,596 votes cast.
The nearly clean sweep by candidates opposed to coddling illegal aliens with taxpayer funds should serve as a warning to incumbents everywhere.
Great news! Thanks for the ping.
I hope this scene is repeated all over the U.S. in upcoming elections. I can dream, can't I?
Good riddance.
I sure am! :o)
Go get 'em!
This is a lesson for America.
The people of this Virginia town stood up and showed that you can fight this wave of illegal aliens if you have the will.
All of the big media, the Chamber of Commerce, and ruling politicians of both parties supported the now-deposed mayor and the town council incumbents in their misguided and arrogant attempt to make Herndon another sanctuary city. They painted the challengers and their supporters as racist, hate-mongering xenophopes. Big money from developers and contractors and the service industries and pro-illegal groups like LULAC and La Raza contributed big time to keep these incumbents in power. It all backfired, and the common people from both political parties rose up and threw them out.
Herndon was the first election this year to be a referendum on the illegal immigration problem. There is a lesson here for the national parties - you'd better start paying attention to the will of the American majority or you too will be sent packing.
Ironically, it was this little Virginia town of 23,000 that can proudly say: "Si, se puede" (yes we can!)
Absolutely! There was massive controversy over the taxpayer funded day labor center for illegals last year and it has been dividing the town ever since. Here is an article from a few days ago.
The emergence of conservative anti-immigrant parties has certainly happened before. I think that nowdays, should one emerge, it would have more to it than anti-immigration laws.
We desperately need a turn-around before November. If this rallies conservatives, I don't need a new party.
March ON!
BumPing.
GREAT news! America is speaking up, and the open borders types in the Senate and House had better take notice. We've had enough!
bttt
Anti-immigrant or anti-illegal immigrant?
Eat it! You dirty rotten invasion enablers. I hope this is a portent of a storm that will sweep out of office a great number of those who have been aiding and abetting the invasion.
That's their next big confab in California in a few weeks...voter registration. I've always been told illegals can't vote.
