Peggy Noonan: The Big Three [that] the president should focus on. (No. 1: Find Osama)
opinion journsl ^ | Ap 26 06 | Peggy Noonan

...A plan for the administration? Free advice is worth the price, but here goes:

[snip]

Issue 1: Iraq, Afghanistan and the age of terror. On these, stabilize, fortify, succeed. Keep America safe. ...Find Osama--it is a scandal that the man who started the new era is still free, still taunting the West, still inspiring those who see the world as he does. It was a mistake to think finding him was not as important as a wider war on terror. Finding him is key. It is almost five years since he did what he did. Get him, try him, kill him.

If we had just used 30 thousands marines in Afghanistan we would have caught OBL in Tora Bora.

John Kerry, is that you?

Osama is probably dead, dying, or out of the loop, and Osama is not the problem. He's ancient history by today's standards.

The problem is Islam. Bush is obviously trying to cultivate the supposedly "moderate" Muslims by things like the latest deal with Dubai (where they are buying a UK company that makes US military equipment) to prove that the problem is not Islam and we can trust them. Nothing in the 1400 years since the birth of that insane death cult - actually a variant of the Arian heresy with a particularly violent monomaniac as a leader - has ever given anyone any reason to trust them, and I think he's making a serious mistake by even pretending to do so. For one thing, "moderate" Muslims have historically always been stomped and taken over by the more radical groups, who are actually the orthodox ones and are perfectly right in regarding the moderates as heretical by Muslim standards.

If the problem were only one person, Noonan's article might make sense. But that's not the problem.

TRY him? I often think Peggy's off the rails, but this time I know she is. FInd him, Kill him, Drag his body through the streets, Put his head on a pike and remind the barbarians we can be tough, too.

Unless gas drops below $2/gal., the country will think the economy stinks. They don't own stock, so the market doesn't impress them. They know people out of work, so they don't believe the rosy employment numbers. Either gas prices go down, or the GOP will lose the majority in the House.

Apparently you are thinking that those mountains are just a piece of cake to search. You are talking about thousands of miles of the roughest terrain, some too high for helicopters to operate safely. Thirty thousand Marines would still have been a drop in the bucket.

What you have demonstrated is that you are determined to blame the military and the President for not doing something that is darn near impossible.

How long did it take us to catch the Unabomber? Eric Rudolph?

I doubt Osama has much command and control now. But it would be a huge psy-op if we found and killed him. Forget the capture part. There would be this huge bruhaha like Mousoui. Or whether to simply detain him like at Gitmo. Just make sure he is dead. And watch the approval ratings rebound.

I tend to agree...

Two potential versions of Osama's trail follow.

Version A:

Military Tribunal Judge: "Are you Osama bin Laden?"
OBL: "Yes"
Military Tribunal Judge: "Bailiff, take 'im and hang 'im."

Version B:

Military Tribunal Judge: "Are you Osama bin Laden?"
OBL: "No"
Military Tribunal Judge: "Bailiff, take 'im and hang 'im."

Do you think that bombing or invading Iran will make gas prices go down? The freepers who want us to invade Iran are singing Nancy Pelosi's song, because if they get their way, gas prices will rise and the Dems will take the House if not the Senate as well.

Osama has put out at least one tape this year that the CIA has authenticated. You seem to imply that he doesn't deserve to be captured and executed. The message that sends to our enemies is one of weakness. You can kill Americans - the victims of Flight 93, for instance - and the American gov't (and citizens like livius) will let you get away with it. As Noonan says, that a "scandal."

Gasoline is not likely to drop below $2/gallon by election day unless Iran agrees to give up nuclear weapons (it won't).

Over half the country DOES own stock, either directly or in mutual funds.

Gasoline has dropped fifteen cents in the last week around here; now down to $2.80.

Oh, he certainly deserves to be captured and killed. But the problem is Islam, not Osama. He didn't invent it, and he came along to pick up the torch only after 1400 years of killing, looting and violence by his ideology.

Sure, troops and the government are looking hard for him everywhere and she's still right about job 1 though.

My guess is that OBL is dead of his sickness or in Iran being protected and there's a tough decision gonna have to be made about that. My guess is that any action on that will come after the 2006 elections - however they turn out, especially if one of the legistative houses is lost to the dark side..

I don't have to read more than the excerpt to get my blood pressure up.

Find him. Try him. Kill him.

How about leaving out #2?

Trying him gives him a podium and grants him global power to spawn hundreds more to take his place.

He has admitted it. We have him on videos that he sent to us.

No mam. Just find him and kill him.

But at the same time, people aren't giving President Bush credit for the great economy."""

Maybe because they know kids like my nephew's best friend, who graduated high in his class with a computer-related degree and has to work in Best Buy as a salesman. We've been outsourcing too many good-paying jobs - including high tech. A HUGE percentate of the "job growth" that is being bragged about is government sector, not private sector jobs (Which are the only real jobs, because gov't jobs are paid for by confiscating tax money from you and me)

FoxNews poll showed the no. 1 concern is the economy, I forgot the no. 2, Iraq was no 3, and illegal immigration was no.4.

Actually I think "high price of gasoline" is up near the top as the number 2 issue "bothering" Americans.

Apparently you want us to invade Iran. What if Osama's in Pakistan. Should we invade Pakistan? Or are you just looking for an excuse to invade Iran?

I assume Peggy thinks that all of those troops in Afghanistan are lounging around at their bases, and if only they would get off their rears they could find OBL.

Exactly. She is starting to believe the democrat talking points. There is a good possibility he is in Iran... slightly out of our reach.

This proves how pointless her columns are, and why I won't even click on this to read it.

Noonan has lost her touch. She's clearly out of the loop, and is stuck in some kind of thinking that bin Laden is important. There is no evidence that he is in charge of anything, or that al-Qaeda has much influence anywhere anymore. It was all over the media that al-Qaeda is abandoning Iraq because, in spite of the car bombs, they can't stop anything; the Iraqi government is formed, and is moving forward.
