Ann Coulter Banned in New Jersey?

Two New Jersey Democrats are pushing to have Ann Coulter's new book "Godless: The Church of Liberalism," banned from all bookstores in their state because she criticized four 9/11 widows known as "the Jersey Girls."

In a joint press release issued Friday, New Jersey Assemblywomen Joan Quigley and Linda Stender say they want New Jersey retailers to "ban the sale of [Coulter's] book throughout the state."

"Ann Coulter's criticism of 9-11 widows, whose only desire since the attacks have been to repair their shattered lives and protect other families from the horrors they have experienced, is motivated purely by petty greed and hate," the two Democrats complained.

"Coulter's vicious characterizations and remarks are motivated by greed and her desire to sell books . . . She is a leech trying to turn a profit off perverting the suffering of others."

Quigley and Stender conclude:

"No one in New Jersey should buy this book and allow Ann Coulter to profit from her hate-mongering. We are asking New Jersey retailers statewide to stand with us and express their outrage by refusing to carry or sell copies of Coulter's book. Her hate-filled attacks on our 9-11 widows has no place on New Jersey bookshelves."

They should, but they don't, and are outraged when confronted with it.

See the 3rd quote on my FR profile page, the two paragraph one by Hayek.

Like what? Protecting the rights of merchants to not provide a forum for viewpoints with which they disagree? Funny how we tend to pay lip service to this idea when we agree with the merchant, but then when it flips around it's labelled "censorship."

When they use their position as gov't officials to push this, then yes, it's violation of free speech.

Do you think that all video or book store proprietors should be required to carry pornography to avoid infringing upon the freedom of speech of pornographers and to prevent illegal restraint of trade?

I'm sure the ACLU will step up for Ann Coulter and prevent this obvious attemtp at censoring freedom of speech...

My thoughts exactly.

That will happen as soon as the the Democrats nominate a candidate who wants to cut taxes, and engage in pre-emptive military actions against the bad guys, like JF Kennedy.

What part of the first amendment don't these women understand? Government cannot force stores to ban books because it doesn't like the content.

Don't the people of New Jersey have computers? Do these women think you have to go to a book store to buy a book? Idiot grandstanding alert.

"Ok, I'm not going to disagree, but just asking businesses not to sell a book is perfectly within the rights of Free Speech from anyone. It may be asinine in this case, but founded on pure constitutional precepts."

I agree with you completely about that. It was my understanding that these were legislators calling for an actual ban. However, if they are just using the word "ban" when calling for a boycott, then they are perfectly within their rights, just incredibly stupid.

Well, words have meaning Mike. I can agree that Quigly and Stender are not calling for a Government ban on the book. But they are asking for someone else to "ban" the book. They are not asking for a "boycott," they are asking for a "ban."

It's close but no cigar.

The government officials are "asking" private citizens to "ban" these books form their retail stores.

Private citizens can ban and government officials can ask.

Anyway, these two air head politicians need to be banned from office next voting cycle.

"Like what? Protecting the rights of merchants to not provide a forum for viewpoints with which they disagree? "

Merchants can do what they like.
It will simply make other booksellers that are close by even richer.
I don't hear any merchants screaming about Ann here. All I am hearing are a pair of rabid Joisey harpy politicians spewing out bile.
I would suggest they worry more about the good taste of the previous RATS Governor they put in power, who cruised highways to get blow jobs from strange men , while still married.

Yes, I think this will make zero difference, and even if the stores did refuse to carry the book there's web commerce!

No, it is not...point me to the law that says if you're a politician you must surrender your opinion or ability to persuade by FS?

Definitely State censorship. The dems are stupidly playing this game to their own demise.

It is one thing for a citizen not to buy the book. Quite another for the full Arm of the State and the full backing of the politicians to call for a ban.

The dems definitely have a death wish. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch.
