Supercapacitor could make electric car viable Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology think they're on the verge of making traditional batteries obsolete. The researchers are working on a new device that uses carbon nanotubes to store and release electrical energy in a system that could carry as much power as today's lead or lithium batteries.

I'm glad the high energy prices are actually helping innovation. Energy prices infuriate me on a day to day basis, but at least the free marketeers are right about this point.

One of the most predictable and truly defining traits about liberals is they see a problem and cry about it, urge conservation or government regulation, cry some more, scream and protest in the streets, and never give even the slightest thought to the likelihood that ingenuity -- propelled, usually, by capitalism -- will solve the problem in no time if just given a chance.

Good God, what a clueless bunch to have as much influence as they have.

It doesn't matter. The research will be silenced and you will never hear another peep about it. It's happened in the past; I cannot give details.

You have interests from the Right (big oil) and the Left ("traditional" alternative energy incl. wind, solar, yada, yada) that will keep such technology from seeing the light of day.

Count me a pessimist.

Do any of the technologies that are being examined reduce power output at higher temperatures? Thermal runaway can be bad news, and the higher the energy density of a storage device, the worse news it is.

If it becomes a viable, profitable, competitive commercial enterprise, it will be brought to market. That's the nature of an entrepreneurial and capitalism. Lantern/light bulb, tubes/transistors, buggies/cars, balloons/jets. Those kinds of things.

So many great innovations in batteries coming to market soon, and here's another example of it continuing not to sit around.

But what I have to wonder is: when will we get off our rumps with regards to nuclear power?

If you accidentally short a nicad, it will become pretty hot from releasing its energy over few minutes. If this capacitor holds as much energy as a nicad, and develops a catastrophic leak or is shorted, the same energy will be released in a small fraction of a second, with explosion.

"Pessimist" is not the noun I have in mind to count you as.
