Tony Strickland Jumps to Early Lead over John Chiang
(Sacramento) Former Assemblyman Tony Strickland begins the race for Controller with a 3-point lead over his Democratic opponent John Chiang, according to a recent California statewide survey by Public Opinion Strategies.
In an initial ballot test, Strickland receives 26% of the vote, while Chiang receives 23%. More importantly, Stricklands lead grows to an impressive 8 point advantage among high propensity likely voters at 31% for Strickland and 23% for Chiang.
California voters understand that the Controller is the taxpayers watchdog, said Strickland Campaign Manager Paul Hegyi. These numbers demonstrate that Tony Strickland is perceived as the fiscal conservative and, therefore, the most likely candidate to be that watchdog.
The Controller has the duty to protect taxpayers from waste, fraud and abuse, said Strickland. That audit authority extends to every level of government where state tax dollars are spent, including bureaucracies like the Los Angeles Unified School District. I intend to aggressively employ performance audits to go after those who waste tax dollars and I think that is what is resonating with voters.
The survey of 800 likely California voters was conducted June 11-13, 2006 and has a margin of error of +/- 3.46%.
Those California polls seem to be all over the map. Do they poll any of the other statewide races?
