Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

Why do we let these Arab types in here to be "students?" Will this country ever learn? How they must laugh at us.

U.S. Embassy Warns Of Possible Terror Attacks In India
Associated Press ^ | August 11, 2006

Posted on 08/10/2006 10:57:20 PM PDT by HAL9000

NEW DELHI -- The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi warned Friday that foreign militants, possibly al-Qaida members, may be planning to carry out bombings in India's two major cities in the coming days.
In an e-mail sent to American citizens living in India, the embassy said New Delhi, the capital, and Bombay, the country's financial and entertainment hub, were the likely targets, and the attacks were believed to be planned for either before or on India's Independence Day, Aug. 15.

The embassy confirmed that it had sent the e-mail, although Indian officials refused to comment on the warning.

PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
This information is current as of today, Thu Aug 10 2006 23:02:18 GMT-0700.

August 10, 2006

This Public Announcement alerts Americans to the Government of the United Kingdom’s August 10, 2006 announcement that it has heightened security at all U.K. airports due to the arrest of several terror suspects, who were reportedly planning to place explosives on commercial air flights. Information periodically is updated by the U.K. Department for Transport (www.dft.gov.uk) and the British Airport Authority (www.baa.co.uk). The U.S. Embassy in London also maintains a website at london.usembassy.gov. Americans with immediate travel plans into or out of the United Kingdom should contact their respective airlines before traveling to the airport. Due to the delays and flight cancellations, U.S. Officials have been cautioned to avoid transiting through U.K. airports at this time. This Public Announcement expires August 31, 2006.

The government of the United Kingdom announced on August 10, 2006 that it has heightened security at all U.K. airports due to the arrest of several terror suspects, who were reportedly planning to place explosives on commercial air flights. As a result of these arrests, the threat level in the U.K. has been raised to critical, reflecting the belief that an attack may be imminent. In the United States, the Department of Homeland Security has also raised the threat level to high for all commercial flights operating in or coming to the United States. The situation remains fluid and is being covered widely by British and international media. Information periodically is updated by the U.K. Department for Transport (www.dft.gov.uk) and the British Airport Authority (www.baa.co.uk). The U.S. Embassy in London also maintains a website at www.london.usembassy.gov .

Americans with immediate travel plans into or out of the United Kingdom should contact their respective airlines before traveling to the airport. Heightened security in other countries may cause delays in other flights from Europe to the United States. American citizens are advised to anticipate stringent security measures and cooperate fully with authorities. For the latest travel and safety information, Americans living and traveling abroad should regularly monitor local media and the Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet website at travel.state.gov. The Homeland Security website also provides information at www.dhs.gov. Travelers should also check the Transportation Security Administration website at www.tsa.gov.

U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take the appropriate steps to bolster their personal security. For additional information, please refer to “A Safe Trip Abroad” found at http://travel.state.gov.

U.S. Government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert. These facilities may temporarily close or periodically suspend public services to assess their security posture. In those instances, U.S. embassies and consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens. Americans abroad are urged to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

As the Department continues to develop information on any potential security threats to U.S. citizens overseas, it shares credible threat information through its consular information program documents, available on the Internet at http://travel.state.gov. In addition to information on the Internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.

Travel Warning
United States Department of State
Bureau of Consular Affairs
Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Thu Aug 10 2006 23:04:04 GMT-0700.

KENYA

August 10, 2006

This Travel Warning is being issued to remind American citizens to consider carefully the risks of travel to Kenya at this time due to ongoing safety and security concerns. This supersedes the Travel Warning of December 30, 2005.

The Department recommends that private American citizens in Kenya evaluate their personal security situation in light of continuing terrorist threats and the limited ability of the Kenyan authorities to detect and deter such acts. Terrorist actions may include suicide operations, bombings, attacks on civil aviation, and attacks on maritime vessels in or near Kenyan ports. U.S. citizens should be aware of the risk of indiscriminate attacks on civilian targets in public places including tourist sites and locations where Westerners are known to congregate, as well as commercial operations associated with U.S. or other Western interests.

p
American citizens in Kenya should remain vigilant, particularly in public places frequented by foreigners such as clubs, hotels, resorts, Western-oriented shopping centers, restaurants, and places of worship. Americans should also remain vigilant in residential areas, schools, and at outdoor recreational events, and should avoid demonstrations and large crowds. In addition to the terrorist threat, there are continuing incidents of criminal activity, including carjacking, robbery, and other violent crime, especially after dark.

Americans who travel to or reside in Kenya despite this Travel Warning are encouraged to register through the State Department’s travel registration website, https://travelregistration.state.gov. By registering, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency. Americans without Internet access may register directly with the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi. The U.S. Embassy is located on United Nations Avenue, Gigiri, Nairobi, Kenya; telephone (254)(20)363-6000; fax (254)(20)363-6410. In the event of an after-hours emergency, the Embassy duty officer may be contacted at (254)(20)363-6170. The Embassy home page is http://kenya.usembassy.gov.

Updated information on travel and security in Kenya may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll free in the United States, or for callers outside the United States and Canada, a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444. For further information please consult the Consular Information Sheet for Kenya, the East Africa Public Announcement, and the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, which are available on the Bureau of Consular Affairs Internet website at http://travel.state.gov.

US warns of India terror attacks

Security is always tightened on eve of the Independence day
The US has warned of possible terror attacks in India in the coming days.
The US embassy in India said they could take place in Delhi and Mumbai in the run-up to the country's Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday.

The embassy said it had information that foreign terrorists allegedly intended to carry out bomb attacks around the cities.

It comes a day after UK police said they had disrupted a plot to bomb UK planes flying to the US.

American citizens in Delhi are being advised by the embassy to "maintain a low profile, be alert and attentive to their surroundings".

The advisory warned that terrorists, "possibly including members of al-Qaeda" were likely to target "major airports, key central Indian government offices, and major gathering places such as hotels and markets".

There was no immediate comment from Indian federal authorities on the US warning.

Suspect 'met Galloway' (London plot)
The Sun ^ | August 11th, 2006 | The Sun

Posted on 08/10/2006 10:17:41 PM PDT by Eurotwit

TERROR suspect Waheed Zaman met controversial MP George Galloway many times, his sister said last night.

Safeena, 24, said of her 23-year-old brother: “He saw it as his duty to stand up for his community and that’s what led him to know George Galloway. He has a lot of respect for him and has met him many times.”

A spokesman for MP Galloway, left, said: “Waheed Zaman is not a name that George is familiar with. He is not known to him on a personal level.”

There is no suggestion Galloway is an associate of Zaman.

B. They returned 25,000 sauce packets to Taco Bell.
I hope all 25,000 were dumped in the trash and not reused.

Lashkar-e-Jhangvi cadre executed in Multan

Hafiz Shafiqur Rehman, a member of the outlawed Sunni group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), convicted of murdering a rival Shia cleric in 1997, was hanged at the Multan jail on August 9, according to Daily Times. An Anti-Terrorism Court in 1999 found Rehman guilty of shooting dead Ijaz Shah, the district president of Tehrik-e-Jaaferi, a group representing the Shias. Higher courts rejected his appeals and President Pervez Musharraf also recently turned down Rehman’s mercy petition.

"UK Agent Infiltrated Suspected Terror Cell That Plotted to Blow Up 10 Jetliners"
Friday, August 11, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "LONDON — America may have been just days away from another Sept. 11, Department of Homeland Security officials said.

That dire assessment came hours after British police swooped in and arrested 24 people in London Thursday, busting up an alleged terrorist plot to blow 10 packed U.S.-bound jetliners out of the sky over the Atlantic.

The plot was foiled when an undercover British agent infiltrated the UK-based group, and passed information to authorities, FOX News has learned.

Early Friday, the names of 19 of the 24 suspects accused in the plotting were made public by British officials.

And it became clear information that played "a very important role" in the subsequent arrest of the 24 in London was provided to Pakistani officials by British nationals arrested in Pakistan in connection with the plot a week ago, according to a government official there. (Full story)

Five Pakistanis were arrested Friday on suspicion that they served as local "facilitators" for those two Britons, the official said.

The suspects in the plot allegedly planned to smuggle peroxide-based liquid ingredients disguised as sports drinks that could be mixed aboard the flight to produce an explosive compound possibly detonated by a device disguised as a digital camera or audio player, Department of Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff to FOX News' Bill O'Reilly."
