Man dies opening grenade with sledgehammer
reuters ^ | Aug 8 2006

Posted on 08/09/2006 12:23:06 PM PDT by Mount Athos

A Brazilian man died on Tuesday when he tried to open what police believe was a rocket-propelled grenade with a sledgehammer in a mechanical workshop on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

Another man who was in the workshop at the time of the explosion was rushed to a hospital with severe burns, a police officer told Reuters. The workshop was destroyed and several cars parked outside caught fire.

Police found several unexploded army issue rocket-propelled grenades in the workshop. They believe the ammunition had been brought there by scavengers wanting to sell them as scrap metal, but they also are investigating a possible link to Rio's heavily armed drug gangs who often raid military bases.

I think it's a given that any time the words "grenade" and "sledgehammer" appear in the same sentence, something interesting is about to occur.

A truly awful event.

I'm picking up a pattern here involving scrap dealers and Brazil...

Proves (again) that you simply cannot legislate away stupidity.

I'm only half joking - I once met a Japanese guy whose job during WWII had been to test torpedo fuzes with a hammer.

The fuses in Japanese grenades in WWII were lit by pulling the pin, inverting the grenade, and slamming the top of the grenade on something hard, usually the grenadiers helmet. Their grenade fuses were even more unreliable than ours were, and they occasionally detonated on ignition. Bummer.

Sounds like a yellow perch.

One of the first things you learn when trying to unhook perch is that they have razor-sharp gill plates, and, in self-defense, they pop them open when you grab them.

Criteria are as follows.

1. Candidate must die. Hospitiliztion is not good enough

Ummm, no.

Candidate must remove himself from the gene pool.

Creatively removing or irreparable damaging one's tinkle toys suffices....

Ummm, dust-biting is a prerequisite for being a Darwin Award candidate.

A common misconception. See post #95...

Source site says this:

http://darwinawards.com/rules

Rules

So how are the Darwin Awards actually determined?

Nominees significantly improve the gene pool by eliminating themselves from the human race in an obviously stupid way. They are self-selected examples of the dangers inherent in a lack of common sense, and all human races, cultures, and socioeconomic groups are eligible to compete. Actual winners must meet the following criteria:

Reproduction--- Out of the gene pool: dead or sterile.

Excellence--- Astounding misapplication of judgment.

Self-Selection--- Cause one's own demise.

Maturity--- Capable of sound judgment.

Veracity--- The event must be true.

Related trivia note:

I've been online long enough to know that Wendy Northcutt didn't have the first Darwin Awards site; it was originally done by a couple of guys who put together a list of 'em but due to reasons unknown (graduation, perhaps?), they stopped maintaining it.

Enter the enterprising Ms. Northcutt, who ran with the then-dormant idea and made a career (and rather good income) with it.

They should have had a "Safety Meeting" first.

Sounds like a "Work Place Accident"
