Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - September 2006

Posted on 09/01/2006 8:57:29 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Five Years Later, We're Still Not Safe
-Full Story-

In the five years since terrorists flew hijacked airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Americans have accepted inconvenience, sacrificed personal liberties and paid billions of dollars for a security clampdown that touches virtually every aspect of their lives.

And we're still not safe.

A close examination of the federal government's homeland security effort shows that there have been major accomplishments since the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. But it also reveals how vulnerable the nation remains to catastrophe.

That might coincide with the UN meetings next week. I don't think AQ would attack with Iran's president here which will be the 18th 19th and 20th. In the tpaes the specifically talk about the United Nations. So it could be the 22.

Welcome.

Sorry. But didn't have a chance to look up the verses from the Zawahiri/Gadahn video. But in the latest one, he mentions that the days are "pregnant" with "new events". And if you do a word search with an index, the Koranic Surah that has the most allusions to "pregnancy" is the "the Hajj", which is the 22nd Surah and deals with "the Hour of Doom". If you post the verses, I could try to look some of them up. I'm no expert though. Just handy with an index. Unfortunately, this is one instance where having a hard copy of the document (the Koran in this case) is probably easier than trying to search through different translations online.

Of course, if you read Arabic, this isn't an issue at all, and it should be easier to find verses and mix and match them, but I don't speak or read Arabic. And those who do are in high demand.

Okey doke. Here's what I've got from a quick review of the video. There were five verses in subtitles as I believe Zawahari was merely quoting from the Koran. Thanks for any input you might have. I was leaning along the lines of thinking the numbers themselves might be clues.

As said by Michael Scheuer, former head of the CIA's Bin Laden unit, a nuclear attack by al Qaeda is not only possible, it is "virtually inevitable". Also, one thing that both George Bush and John Kerry agreed upon during the 2004 debates was that "nuclear terrorism" was the greatest threat facing our nation. It is not hypothetical at all.

We just had the fifth anniversary of what *did* happen. We might be coming up on the fifth anniversary of what *almost* happened. The UN may have been a target, and targets are often revisited . . .

Osama claims he has nukes: If US uses N-arms it will get same response

By Hamid Mir

(snip)

KABUL, Nov 9: Osama bin Laden has said that “we have chemical and nuclear weapons as a deterrent and if America used them against us we reserve the right to use them”. He said this in a special interview with Hamid Mir, the editor of Ausaf, for Dawn and Ausaf, at an undisclosed location near Kabul. This was the first interview given by Osama to any journalist after the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington.

The correspondent was taken blindfolded in a jeep from Kabul on the night of Nov 7 to a place where it was extremely cold and one could hear the sound of anti-aircraft guns firing away. After a wait of some time , Osama arrived with about a dozen bodyguards and Dr Ayman Al-Zuwahiri and answered questions. . .

HM: Some Western media claim that you are trying to acquire chemical and nuclear weapons. How much truth is there in such reports?

OSB: I heard the speech of American President Bush yesterday (Oct 7). He was scaring the European countries that Osama wanted to attack with weapons of mass destruction. I wish to declare that if America used chemical or nuclear weapons against us, then we may retort with chemical and nuclear weapons. We have the weapons as deterrent.

HM: Where did you get these weapons from ?

OSB: Go to the next question.

Al-Qaeda nukes may have reached US shores

The Frontier Post (Pakistan)

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani and American investigators converge that Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda network may have successfully transported several nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons of mass destruction to the United States, The Frontier Post learnt Friday.

Already on high alert, United States security officials are having sleepless nights that Al Qaeda can strike in New York again on the occasion of United Nations General Assembly session.

Investigators from Pakistan's ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) and American FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) are jointly probing into the possibilities of Al Qaeda possessing nuclear, biological and chemical weapons.

They have reached a conclusion that at least two briefcase nuclear weapons may have reached the US shores, sources close to these investigators revealed to this scribe. The investigators have been able to identify at least one briefcase weapon acquired by Al Qaeda from Central Asian rogue groups. The weapon identified is small 8-kilogram device that carries at least 2 kg of fissionable plutonium and uranium. The device, of Russian make, carries a serial number 9999 and manufacturing date October 1988. . .

US security agencies are already on high alert and realise that Al Qaeda can strike in New York again on the occasion of UN General Assembly. Analysis of the recent statements released by Osama bin Laden carried out by US agencies has shown that the terrorist network can pick up an important occasion like the UN General Assembly session to retaliate against US strikes on Afghanistan.

four days later, on November 14th . . .

(snip)
Gloria Borger: Mr. Vice President, during this crisis, you have been constantly sent to what we now know as the undisclosed location or locations for security reasons. Can you tell us why they keep doing this?

Vice President Cheney: We've done it because we feel it's important, especially when the threat level goes up to keep the President or myself separated. Not physically occupy the same space at the same time. In-years past when we're doing presidential security, we've been concerned primarily with the act of an individual. Some nut with a gun who would take out try to take out or assassinate the president of the United States. That's happened all too often in our history. But that's a different scale of threat than a situation in which you've got people able to organization a conspiracy, 19 hijackers to commit suicide on airplanes on Sept. 11.

Able to come into the country and perhaps smuggle weapons of mass destruction in with them. And threaten, in effect, not just one individual, but threatened the government. And conceivably be able to try to decapitate the federal government. That is to say, to take out the entire leadership of our government.

Aliases: Army of the Levant, Soldiers of Greater Syria

Base of Operation: Afghanistan; Lebanon; Syria; West Bank/Gaza

Founding Philosophy: Jund al-Sham (Army of the Levant; Soldiers of Greater Syria) is a title claimed by several Sunni Islamic extremist entities, all or none of which may be tied together. Despite variations in their origin and focused area of operations, these elements were founded upon the common goal of establishing an Islamic caliphate in the greater Syrian region.

The first incarnation of Jund al-Sham occurred in Afghanistan in 1999 when Abu Musab al-Zarqawi led exiled militants and recruits from Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine in planning and training for operations to be conducted in the Levant.(SNIP)

The final appearance of the Jund al-Sham moniker surfaced in statements claiming responsibility for several terrorist incidents, the most notable of which was the March 2005 bombing of a theater in Doha, Qatar near a British school and popular among Westerners.

*******Statements were also issued touting Jund al-Sham's involvement in several bombings in Lebanon and a blast at a Texas oil refinery that same month. More claims followed, citing a blast outside the British consulate in New York two months later******...(SNIP)

Al-Jihad al-Islami

Aliases: Al-Jihad, Al-Jihad al-Islami, Jihad Group, New Jihad Group, Qaeda al-Jihad, Talaa'al al-Fateh, Vanguards of Conquest

Base of Operation: Afghanistan; Egypt

Founding Philosophy: This Egyptian Islamic extremist group merged with Bin Laden's al-Qaeda organization in June 2001, but may retain some capability to conduct independent operations. The relationship between Jihad leader al-Zawahiri and bin Laden formally began in February 1998 when al-Jihad joined the International Front.

Following the group's founding in the late 1970s, Egyptian security authorities began a ruthless crackdown on al-Jihad in the 1980s, imprisoning, torturing and executing its members. The group then split into two factions, one led by al-Zawahiri, the other by Abbud al-Zumar, who is currently imprisoned. The latter faction has since disappeared as many of its members have been jailed. But al-Zawahiri's faction, also known as the "Vanguards of Conquest" (Talaa'al al-Fateh), has thrived. In the mid-80s, al-Zawahiri moved the headquarters to Afghanistan and began recruiting Afghan arabs. New cells of al-Jihad were trained in the mujaheddin camps of Afghanistan from which they set off on missions to Egypt. Al-Jihad militants were trained as suicide bombers (reputedly an al-Zawahiri specialty) and, for reasons of security and effectiveness, they formed into isolated cells working independent of one another.

Current Goals: Al-Jihad's primary goals today have merged with those of al-Qaeda, to include attacks on US and Israeli interests."

GLOBAL CRISIS WATCH: "ZAWAHIRI'S ATTACK ON FELLOW MUSLIMS AND THREAT AGAINST JORDAN" by Nick Grace
(September 12, 2006)

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The 12th message from Ayman al-Zawahiri was released on September 11, "Hot Issues with Shaykh Ayman al-Zawahiri," which is dated September 2006. The video, which lasts 01:16, is not as well produced as as-Sahab's more recent products but is subtitled in what appears to be colloquial American English. The video features a one-on-one interview with the al Qaeda operations chief and an off-camera interviewer. Zawahiri sits in front of a bookshelf. As evidenced with shoddy editing during some of the questions, the original interviewer's voice has been replaced with a slick and deep-voiced presenter.

The video contains three main points: promotion of the fight to establish Islamic Emirates in Iraq and Afghanistan, criticism of Muslims who do not support al Qaeda or its Jihad, and a declaration that the looming theater in Jordan will lead to the biggest conquest - Israel."

Two years later he moved on to join Islamic Jihad. Due to domestic pressures, he moved to Afghanistan in the mid-1990s where he met with the fledgling al-Qaeda organization and helped to develop its structure.

Al-Zawahiri is also the founder of Egyptian Islamic Jihad, which seeks to overthrow the secular Egyptian Government through violent means. A physician, Al Zawahiri is thought to be serving as both an advisor and doctor to Usama Bin Laden in Afghanistan."

Remember that successor of Zarqawi as head of al Qaeda in Iraq is al-Masri (al-Muhajir) who issued the 15 day deadline starting 9/7 and ending 9/22.

The attacks carried out by Jund al-Sham in Syria are likely connected to al-Masri's deadline. and remembering that the Canadian cell recently arrested was also connected to al Qaeda in Iraq, it is highly plausible that the global network continues to work itself deep into the United States.

Bin Laden's order to Zarqawi to prepare operations in the United States back in early 2005 is also likely connected to the attacks inside the United States that have been repeatedly threatened by UBL and Zawahiri over the past eight months.

The New Head of Jihad Inc.?
Intelligence Officials Say Jordanian Terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi May Be Emerging as Osama Bin Laden Successor
By ALEXIS DEBAT (snipped)

March 28, 2005 — - However big a shock a recent suicide bombing in Doha was to the Qataris, it was far from unexpected in Western capitals, where intelligence agencies had discreetly put out a travel warning through their respective embassies.

The emirate, a key ally in the Bush administration's war on terror, has been high on the terrorist target list ever since it became home to the U.S. Central Command's operational headquarters in early 2003. Just five days before the March 19 blast, which killed a British teacher and wounded 12 others, the State Department issued a general warning to all Americans travelling in the Gulf that "extremists may be planning to carry out attacks against Westerners and oil workers" in the region. What did surprise intelligence officials was the name of the group which claimed responsibility for the bombing: Jund al-Sham ("Soldiers of the Levant").

Although the group said that this was its first statement, Jund al-Sham is the same name as a group started by the Jordanian terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Intelligence officials believe it may be a sign that Zarqawi is beginning to attack targets outside Iraq, and may, in fact, be emerging as a replacement to Osama bin Laden as the operational leader of the global jihad. Analysts are concerned that Zarqawi may now begin to redeploy his cadre of militants who, having gained important combat experience in Iraq, are capable of carrying out deadly missions elsewhere. . .

Terror expert fleshes out Masri links

WASHINGTON, June 19 (UPI) -- The apparent successor to slain terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has been heading Zarqawi's international networks, terrorism expert Alexis Debat said Monday.

Debat, a former French Defense Ministry official, a senior fellow at The Nixon Center and one of the leading authorities on Zarqawi, said Abu Ayyub al-Masri was put in charge of Zarqawi's overseas networks sometime in 2004.

Zarqawi ran two al-Qaida training camps in Afghanistan in the 1990s, where he and al-Masri first met. From those camps, Zarqawi developed a personal network of fighters that is believed to be dispersed in the Middle East and Western Europe.

Debat said as many as 200 to 300 more fighters have trained under Zarqawi in Iraq and returned to their home countries.

According to Debat, al-Masri sent "envoys" all over the Middle East, North Africa and Europe to raise money and recruit international volunteers for the jihad in Iraq. The envoys apparently included a man named Yasser al-Misri, whom Algerian security services arrested in July 2005.

Al Masri is also suspected of playing a key role in the 2004, 2005 and 2006 bombings in Egypt's Sinai peninsula, which are thought linked to Egyptian elements close to Zarqawi.

Debat said al-Masri's apparent relationship with al-Qaida's second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahiri suggests Zarqawi's networks will be more closely controlled by al-Qaida's leadership.

Al-Masri is said by the U.S. military to be in his thirties and was born and raised in Egypt. He joined the Egyptian Islamic Jihad in the 1980s, according to Debat.

There, al-Masri operated alongside al Zawahiri and eventually became one of his protégés, according to Debat who wrote the assessment for a blog known as the "Washington Realist."

"Gunmen Kill Police Chief in Mexico"
Sep 12th - 11:09pm
By IOAN GRILLO Associated Press Writer

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MEXICO CITY (AP) - Gunmen ambushed and killed a police chief in the Mexican border state of Nuevo Leon Tuesday in the latest slaying of a law officer in a region ravaged by a war between drug gangs.

Enrique Barrera, police chief of the town of Linares, about 135 miles southwest of the border at McAllen, Texas, was shot dead as he left his home to go to work, said Nuevo Leon Attorney General Carlos Trevino.

Trevino said the killing had the hallmarks of an organized crime hit, but he needed to gather more evidence before making a conclusive statement.

A lone gunman killed Nuevo Leon's top investigator, Marcelo Garza, last week outside an art gallery near the northern city of Monterrey.

Trevino said there was no evidence the two killings were related."
