Noah's Ark Discovered ... Again and Again
Skeptical Inquirer ^ | 9-5-06 | Benjamin Radford

Posted on 09/05/2006 10:47:39 AM PDT by Central Scrutiniser

In this world there are things that seem on the verge of being discovered every so often, yet never quite materialize. The "Lost City" of Atlantis, for example, has been "found" at least a half dozen times. One researcher is pretty sure it is in Bolivia; another says it is Antarctica; a third claims that Bimini beachrock may be from the lost civilization. So it is with Noah's Ark. The difference is, of course, that the implications of Noah's Ark actually being found extend far beyond archaeology. The weight of all the paired animals in the world is nothing compared to the religious freight that the Ark carries. The Ark story is scientifically implausible; there simply wouldn't be enough space on the boat to accommodate two of every living animal (including dinosaurs), along with the food and water necessary to keep them alive. Furthermore, constructing a vessel of that scale would take hundreds of workers months to complete.

human brains that are, at the best, only operating at about 20% of their capacity - and that's the best of them. 10% is a good day for the majority they say.

That's a well-known urban legend that has no grounding in fact. Humans use all their brains. What next, are you going to tell us about this wonderful business opportunity you've been invited to participate in by a prince in Nigeria? You write some nutty stuff, and it is clear that you have a hard time separating reality from fiction. I think there is a clinical term for that..

Now, THERE'S science for you!

That word, "science". I do not think it means what you think it means.

No, it wasn't me personally who needed the miracle of clothing that didn't wear out in the wilderness, it was actually the Israelites.

Cthulhu does not wear clothes.

Oops, sorry!

You had attributed it to him, I was not aware it was a joint effort (Source.)

I like the ending though:

Behold, I give you the belligerently ignorant, the intellectual Luddite's of our time. Know them for the anti-knowledge disruptors they are.

Do you believe that the entire human population of earth has come from Noah and his family in just 5000 years?

Fascinating, that means a huge number of inbreeding and somehow no genetic defaults?

Why I said he was more eloquent than I. :-)

Sorry for raining on your parade. Sigh. Sometimes I need to just shut up.

If you are a human being, you are a descendant of Noah, and Noah stuck with difficult things (like building the ark for a very long time).

Coyote...don't be surprised if you feel the urge to have a good stiff drink afterward.

What if God gave you infinite knowledge of the unverse, and a vocabulary of a bronze age shepherd? How would you communicate this knowledge to other bronze age shepherds? Wonder if I would do better than the authors of the Bible?

Dear Coyoteman, I love everyone on Free Republic and pray for all of them.

The scientists who come on Free Republic need to scroll quickly on past comments they skim and know they won't like; just as we "creationists" skim over replies that we see right away we don't like and aren't going to agree with. I have to skim hurriedly past obscenities, crass jokes and gobbeldygook posted by various and sundry people on this site all the time. It's America at her best, and worst.

Having said that . . the Bible is a book that has a theme that ties together and culminates in the Lord Jesus Christ and his blood atonement sacrifice on the Cross which is the only way we are going to be able to approach the Father. We have to come to Him through Jesus Christ. - Now, that may not seem fair to a lot of people, but that's just the way it is; flood aside for the moment.

You see, in the New Testament, there is a passage of scripture that states that we have faith to understand that the things we see (material world) are made from the things which are unseen (atoms), and I am amazed that this one verse, written before microscopes were even thought of, reveals a scientific truth of great import to eyes that will see and ears that will hear. The material world includes our bodies, and scripture states in another place "in Him we live and move and have our very being". It is not surprising that any carbon dating of any physical thing will present being very ancient; in fact, I would not be surprised if there were really much way of putting any perfectly dependable beginning date upon anything in the physical realm, in particular our living bodies as it requires decay to measure as I understand carbon dating . It is ALL very, very ancient. In fact, He is referred to as the Ancient of Days in the scriptures. We cannot comprehend just how ancient and we are overwhelmed and awed at the magnitude of the Universe that He created.

So, um, just for the sake of argument...how do you know that all the animals boarded as full grown adults? I'm thinking a month and a third (40 days/40 nights), gestation times....

Just trying to cause trouble. ; )

If it didn't happen why are there stories of a flood from every culture in the world? China has a story that is almost exactly the same.

Could it be because floods happen in cycles and even in our day Great Floods have wipe away whole villages and towns.

Imagine what the people in that situation, if they lived in an archaic time without modern transportation or communications, would tell their progeny?

"Grandfather if the flood was so bad that it killed everything how come things are alive today?"

"Because one man and his family rescued every creature in a big boat."

That sounds like an easy story for the bard to tell around the village fire-pit.

A hundred years later everyone would hear the same story but each local area would be remembering a different flood.

Across time they all blend into one single grand event.

It is hard to misinterpret atoms.

That explains way it took thousands of years between their first mention (before Jesus, by the way) and quantum theory.

You still miss the point of the quote. The distinction is between physical and spiritual.

Your complete willful ignorance of scientific fact is truly frightening, I'm glad you have your faith, but you can be faithful and not completely ignorant.

If everyone were like you, we would still live in caves and be wearing animal skins.
