A day in the life of President & Mrs. Bush (9/9/06): photos & USS Texas commissioning

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President Bush is spending most of the weekend in the White House while his wife attended the commissioning ceremony today in Houston, Texas, for the US Navy's newest attack submarine, the USS Texas. Mrs. Bush had agreed to be the boat's sponsor while she was still the First Lady of Texas.

As we in the U.S. prepare to observe the 5th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, British Prime Minister Tony Blair is visiting the Middle East. The White House issued a brief written statement by President Bush about Mr. Blair's visit. Here is the transcript:

President's Statement on Prime Minister Blair Visit to Lebanon, Israel, and Palestinian Territories

I am pleased that Prime Minister Blair will be visiting Lebanon, Israel, and the Palestinian territories. The deployment of increasing numbers of international forces in an enhanced United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL), which enabled the lifting of the air and sea blockade of Lebanon, makes this a timely visit. The Prime Minister will be discussing ways to facilitate the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1701, including enforcing the ban on unauthorized arms shipments to Hezbollah from Iran and Syria. I understand the Prime Minister will also be exploring ways to advance the dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians and the two state solution - a democratic Israel and democratic Palestine living side by side in peace and security. I wish him well in his efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The President and First Lady depart Sunday afternoon for New York where they will commemorate the 5th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on our nation. There will be a wreath-laying at Ground Zero on Sunday evening, and a service of prayer and remembrance at St. Paul's Chapel in New York.

_ Monday, September 11, 2006, President Bush will breakfast with New York City first responders at a firehouse. He will participate in a moment of silence and a ceremony with New York City first responders in commemoration of September 11, 2001. He then travels to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, for a wreath-laying ceremony at the site of the crash of Flight 93. Finally, the President returns to Washington where he will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony for the 5th anniversary at the Pentagon attack. There are no prepared remarks for any of these events. However, the President will be speaking to the nation from the Oval Office at 9:00 p.m. eastern time. Press Secretary Tony Snow said this is not a political speech. It will be a reflection of what September 11th has meant to the President, and to the country; the realities that it has brought to all of our attention and how we can move forward together to try to win the war on terror.

_ Tuesday, after the emotional anniversary of 9/11/01, there are no public events scheduled. This, of course, could change as events warrant.

_ Wednesday there will be a Republican National Committee reception at Evermay, in Washington, D.C.

_ Thursday, GWB will meet with President Roh of South Korea, in the Oval Office. There will be a social dinner that evening in honor of the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz, followed by entertainment in the East Room.

_ Friday, no public events are scheduled.

EXTENDED SCHEDULE:

_ Sept. 18: Vice President Cheney is scheduled to visit Luzerne County, PA, for a fundraiser for U.S. Rep. Don Sherwood.

_ Sept. 19: President Bush delivers an address to the United Nations General Assembly, New York, NY.

_ Sept. 25: Vice President Cheney is scheduled to appear at a Republican fund-raiser in Milwaukee, WI.

_ Nov. 28-29, 2006: President Bush will travel to Tallanin, Estonia, for meetings with the President and Prime Minister of Estonia, and then travel to Riga, Latvia, for the NATO summit.

Bubba demolished my prescription glasses also.

I got two pair to replace them; one for me and one for him.

But he never got them again. I think he knew I was ticked.

Bubba is very tall and could counter surf with ease and get anything. Fortunately, he's never developed that habit.

Okay, you people are not going to seduce me again.

The other day there was a thread that disintegrated into recipe sharing and I foolishly succumbed, and made a spice cake with cream cheese icing.

That is the last cake I will ever make! It was good, but the bakery makes them just as good and a lot smaller. If that cake would keep, it would last forever. I only allow myself one small sweet a day and the domestic partner's idea of a piece of cake is one inch square.

So, don't even think of tricking me into making divinity!!

No, I won't.

We are not due to have elections for nearly 4 years so in theory the current labour government can remain in power for that period of time.

With the majority in the house it is unlikely that a vote of no confidence can be obtained by the opposition parties to force a general election. However if Brown takes over as PM he may wish to call a general election in a couple of years if he feels he will win to give himself a mandate from the country so to speak.

For your information our government including the PM are made up on MPs who continue to serve as MPs as well as running a government department and their cabinet duties.

I have blackberry bushes all up one side of my garden and half of the other.

I have made jam, ice cream and eaten them virtually every night for the past 2 or 3 months.

Bahbah gave me recipe for plum buckle and I adapted it with blackberries today. It was lovely. I found the slight tartness of the blackberries if you call it tart - I do not really because I used to eating them straight off the bush with no added sugar - complimented the very rich cake mixture. I also served it with English custard which is fairly sweet.

Mum's food processor is a Kenwood Variomatic gourment which at the time she bought it was one of the best in the price range she could afford. Even today the spec of it is higher than a lot of the modern ones which only have 1 or 2 speed and a pulse action, hers has 8 speeds one of which covers the pulse action. It has many attachments and different slicers even an ice cream maker and citric juicer.

Its outer casing shows yellowing of age but apart from that it is in perfect working condition.

Brent Mussberger said a little while ago that he figured that the President had most likely already gone to bed, and that sounds like a really good idea.

9 seconds to go, 24-7...........GOOD NIGHT, ALL!!

GO BUCKEYES!! NUMBER ONE!!

I did not know you played Pomp and Circumstance at your graduations so I have learned something today.

Was that the Last night of the Proms you were listening to? I normally watch it on TV but fell asleep after all my cooking and cleaning.

I love the all flags at the end and cuddly toys etc that the students wave whilst belting out Rule Britannia.

I'm afraid nothing more specific is available at this time:

Bush's commemoration of the anniversary of the attacks will begin Sunday afternoon in New York, where he will lay a wreath at Ground Zero before taking part in a prayer service.

On Monday, he will begin his day with breakfast with emergency service personnel in New York, then will participate in a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time that the first plane slammed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, and then a ceremony with New York first responders.

From there, Bush will travel to Shanksville, Pa., where just after noon he is scheduled to participate in a wreath-laying. Later that afternoon, he will take part in a similar ceremony at the Pentagon.

Of course, our good friends at CSPAN are no help with this and do not mention President Bush in their schedule until his address from the Oval Office, Monday at 9PM Eastern.
