Pope statement not enough: Muslim Brotherhood

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood said a Vatican statement on Saturday saying Pope Benedict was sorry for upsetting Muslims with his comments on Islam did not go far enough.

"We want a personal apology (from the Pope). We feel that he has committed a grave error against us and that this mistake will only be removed through a personal apology," Muslim Brotherhood Deputy Leader Mohammed Habib told Reuters.

"Has he presented a personal apology for statements by which he clearly is convinced? No," he said.

In a speech on Tuesday the Pope repeated criticism of the Prophet Mohammad by the 14th century Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus, who said everything the Prophet brought was evil "such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

The remarks sparked outrage across the Islamic world.

"The Holy Father is very sorry that some passages of his speech may have sounded offensive to the sensibilities of Muslim believers," Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone said in the statement.

The Muslim Brotherhood is a political Islamist group founded in Egypt which has inspired movements across the Arab world.

I've finally been convinced of the evil of Islam. I had to read through the Quran twice cover to cover before that happened.

They won;t be happy unless the Pope converts. He should keep speaking the truth about Islam.

I WISH PEOPLE WOULD READ WHAT THE POPE ACTUALLY SAID AND MAKE SOME ATTEMPT TO UNDERSTAND IT!!!

Yes, of course, you're right. But you see, the problem is that I, like so many of my fellow Americans, am up to "here" with Islam. I've had enough of this religion, this religion of disdain, derision, hatred, and violence for those who will not convert. And so, you can see why so many have had a quick and perhaps less than thoughtful reaction to the news.

This Pope's only sin seems to be that he actually had the guts to speak the truth about Islam even if only through an indirect argument and a reference to a quote from the distant past. Regardless of whether the Pope actually agrees with the premise is immaterial, at least from a political perspective.

What does matter is that he uttered the truth about Islam. And that's what Islam cannot tolerate, and hence the angry reaction.

The Holy Father is sorry that you Islamic POS are too stupid to understand his message.

So true. And yet they had no problem understanding the Popes messages regarding opposition to the Iraq war, the war with Afghanistan, other global conflicts. Hmmmm...

He didn't back down. He said that he is sorry they can't understand a simple argument.

That's a relief.

It's not just the Muslims. It's not just haters of Muslims.
And, believe me, I've had it with the Islamofascist and the "moderate Muslims" who continue to fail to deal with them.

Even devout Catholics are totally foolish about this!

The Pope's address had nothing to do with Islam at all! It was meant to encourage ACADEMIA to be more inclusive in their definition of what is considered "rational"!

If he was invoking Islam at all, it was merely to say that even that a radical "God doesn't have to be rational or consistent" viewpoint should be given consideration in academic thought.

Nothing is ever enough to appease these murderous savages. Even when they are the only ones in a country, they fight among themselves.

I for one would have fallen over dead to have heard them say "move on." LOL Of course, the right thing to have done would have been to say "we accept your apology" but then, they would have to quit rioting and it's obvious that's their only form of "entertainment!" Their lives are soooo boring.

Personally, I hope the Pope doesn't say anything further.

As for me, I'm only sorry that the Crusaders didn't have nukes!

No, it's not enough: The Pope should have related how the
Koran, a violent misssive that originated in the 620's, has
not changed since then.

For the record, I should be clear about my own opinions; I don’t hate Muslims but I do have disdain for their religion, which I consider to be extremely dangerous. I appreciate your putting moderate Muslims in quotations but I’m not sure why anyone would reasonably expect these “moderates” to admonish the extremists.

From my point of view, the only difference between a moderate and, I’ll use the word extremist, rather than fascist, is that the moderates simply have not yet read the holy book. The extremists, or perhaps more accurately, the fundamentalists, have. They are simply following Mohamed’s dictates. I view moderates as potential fundamentalists, and hence, as potentially dangerous.

Islam can only be considered a religion of peace if none of its practitioners have actually studied what Mohamed preached and we can be certain that none ever will. Of course, that‘s silly.

I understand your point about the Pope’s attempt to engage academe in a thoughtful discussion about religion and culture. However, no one should be surprised at the response of the Islamic world to the Pope’s thoughtful commentary.

To my main point, what matters to the Islamic world, what has angered them so much, and what should matter to us as well, is that the Pope had the guts to, however obliquely intended or reasoned, utter the truth about Islam. This, Islam cannot tolerate.

And the reason why it should matter to us is that almost none of our other leaders will, even if they understand it, speak truth to this cancer of a religion.

Yeah, it is pretty bad ... but if a Democrat (especially the Hildabeast) gets elected in 2008 ... load up on the ammo, it's gonna get ugly.
