Secret Service pays a visit to DU.
10-26-06

Posted on 10/26/2006 7:24:44 PM PDT by Arcy

In a posting by the #1 idiot (David Allen - AKA Skinner) over at Dark Underworld, he advises his fellow kool-aid drinkers that they have had two inquiries by the Secret Service earlier today.

As someone who occasionally strolls by their web site for a few gut-busting laughs, I'm not suprised comments on their site would arouse the attention of the boys in black.

Here's a snip from his post to their members...In the five-plus years since Democratic Underground was started, we have had legal issues arise on a fairly regular basis (Not surprising). When that happens, we almost never make any sort of public comment about it.... But an issue (an issue?) has come up this week which we feel we should probably share with you (ya think?), because we think you should know what we are doing to protect your personal information. (This idiot is more concerned about protecting the privacy of his members, than the threats his members made on the President!)

... Fortunately the members of DU are generally level-headed (hardly) and respectful of the rules, so we have not had any problems with this issue in the past. (Then why all the legal problems?) But today we have had two separate inquiries from the Secret Service about posts on our website. (haha)

The inquiries involved three posts by two separate visitors (You mean Members) to our website. Incidentally, both of the people in question were banned last week (yeah, right) -- before we were aware that the Secret Service was looking into their postings. ..

The United States Secret Service has asked Democratic Underground to hand over any identifying or personal information we have about the two individuals in question.

I bet when Clinton was President, we had many more inquiries.

For years, I have been curious about my FBI file and what the contents might be. I read years and years ago that you could request a free copy of the contents of your FBI folder although there was a warning: if you don't have a folder, requesting the contents will create one. (Presumably to hold your request.)

I had a friend apply for a job there 15 years ago, and he used me as a reference. They called me 3 or 4 months later. I assumed they checked me out along the way. And then Clinton came along . . . Well, I'm sure that there's stuff saved from the Internet.

[There's also a group dynamic at work -- people trying to top each other in being outrageous or radical.]

Circle jerk? (Sorry for the vulgarity.)

And ever notice how when they interview of neighbors of some guy who went off his nut they always say "He was a quiet friendly guy, never caused anybody any problems."

That's the main reason I only live next to people who break things in a drunken rage. As long as I hear the dishes flying and music blaring in the background, I know I'm safe.

Do they say anywhere whether they gave the information to the Secret Service?

I remember those days vividly. But it wasn't like that. I just lurked for a few years before I signed on in 99, so I know how things were back in the dark days. I recall being very impressed at how good FR was at policing its own.

Sure, there were some freepers that sometimes got a little out if line and made threats that were just a little too... uh... realistic. But they were pounced on immediately by other freepers, and in those days, by JimRob himself much of the time. There was always a line not to be crossed. The later changes and added mods made the job somewhat easier to keep up with, but the basic self-restraint has always been a notable feature of FR. That's one of the reasons that I focused so much on FR in those days. It ~wasn't~ totally out of hand like so many other politics discussion boards were. Nevermind how nuts the BBS circuit used to get... but that's another topic.

DU has no such restraint.

And of course, the freedom-loving, pro-American patriots they are, they are willing bending over backwards to cooperate in every way with the secret service, right?

Somehow I doubt it.

Wow. I knew the DU'ers were Bush-hating lefties (and especially skinner). And I knew that as such, they are terminally stuck on stupid. But I didn't realize (call me naive) that they were 'that' stupid. (Stupid enough to make a written threat against the President on a public forum.)

I guess I was wrong to underestimate their capacity for stupidity. (vast understatement)
