Threat Matrix: November 2006

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
The Price of Victory
-Full Story-

The "bombshell" revelation from last April's National Intelligence Estimate (NIE), which was leaked to the New York Times in September, was that the war in Iraq had resulted in more terrorism, not less. As reported by United Press International's Claude Salhani, "Did we really need 16 intelligence agencies to tell us that? Ten minutes of watching the newscast of your choice, from Al-Jazeera to Fox News, would be enough to convince most observers." But the key question is why the war has provoked the global Jihad.

One answer has to be the influence in the Arab world of the America-
hating network Al-Jazeera
. The AIM DVD on "Terror Television" shows film footage of captured terrorists saying they came to Iraq to kill Americans because of the words and images on Al-Jazeera.

That's an interesting opinion and may be true.

It also could be very public as a warning of some type by someone -- yet to be determined.

Bin Laden May Have Been In Italy In Early 1990's, Says Letter
Milan, 28 Nov.

US investigators have asked to examine a three-page letter found by Italian investigators in 1995 at an Islamic cultural centre in Milan at the centre of many anti-terror investigations, which indicates that al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden could have travelled to Milan in the early 1990s, Rome daily La Repubblica reported on Tuesday. The letter is dated 31 May, 1991, approximately when bin Laden is supposed to have moved from Saudi Arabia to Sudan, from where he was expelled in 1996.

"The news is the arrival of Osama bin Laden," says the document, in which the writer also claims that "by the way, I want those in Egypt to know that I am in Italy."

The letter is part of documents presented by prosecutors at a trial in Milan of 17 terror suspects, mostly Egyptian nationals, accused of using the controversial Islamic centre in viale Jenner - classified as a financier of terrorism causes by the US Treasury Department after 9/11 - to fasify documents, smuggle arms and provide a cover for terror activities. The mosque, according to the prosecution, was at the centre of a network which linked terror activities in Europe and the Middle East.

Investigators however are still reportedly unclear whether the person who wrote the letter, whose signature is Abou Abdallah, was actually in Italy as he claims or in Peshawar, in northern Pakistan, which is the document's dateline.

Islamic Militant Leader Kills Himself
November 28, 2006

The leader of an Islamic militant group blew himself up at a border post near Lebanon on Tuesday after a gunbattle with security forces that left two of them wounded, the Syrian government said. Omar Abdullah, 28, the leader of a militant organization Tawhid and Jihad, was challenged when he tried to cross into Lebanon with fake documents, the Interior Ministry said.

A witness said Abdullah was standing outside the passport control building when security agents approached. He opened fire with a handgun, wounding two, then ran toward the nearby village of Kfeir Yabous about 500 yards away. More security forces arrived, started shooting and apparently hit the gunman, said the witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear of reprisals. The attacker raised one hand in a gesture of surrender, but used the other to detonate an explosives belt.

The Interior Ministry statement said nine fake identification documents were found on Abdullah, who also used the name Omar Hamra.

American Traitor Leading Jihad in Somalia?
November 28, 2006

I was reading through the headlines today to see if fighting has begun between our allies in Ethiopia and the jihadis of the Islamic Courts Union which now run most of Southern Somalia, when I came across something interesting.

The head of The Foreign Relations Department of the Islamic Courts Union, Ibrahim Hassan Addow, is an American citizen.

"Somalia Islamists join terror networks"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "afrol News, 20 November - Somalia's Islamist movement, which controls most of the country, is becoming increasingly present on foreign websites propagating jihad against the non-believers and presenting the war in Somalia as part of a global confrontation. In unofficial videos from the Islamists secret training camps, al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is praised.

The Mogadishu-based Islamic Court Union and its Islamist militias are getting stronger present in the Internet, using a two-faced strategy. Official statements from court leaders, also available from the Union's website, demonstrate moderate viewpoints. The "unofficial" web campaign, however, is much wider and links the Islamists closely to the world's most radical jihadist groups.

A new Somali jihadist video is doing the rounds in Mogadishu and on radical websites used to propagate the messages of al Qaeda. It shows Islamist fighters training for war at a secret camp and specifically glorifies Osama bin Laden. Although not officially endorsed by the Islamic Courts, the militia's video features some of their key figures, such as Mogadishu security chief Abdullahi Maalim Ali - also know as Abu Utayba."

3 Texans among 5 men kidnapped in Mexico
AP on Yahoo ^ | 11/28/06 | AP

Posted on 11/28/2006 10:37:25 PM PST by NormsRevenge

PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Mexico - U.S. and Mexican authorities are searching for three Americans and two Mexicans kidnapped by dozens of armed men who swarmed a Mexican hunting ranch near the U.S. border.

Witnesses told police that 30 to 40 armed men entered the La Barranca ranch late Sunday and took the five men. The ranch, used for deer hunting, is located near the Mexican town of Hidalgo, about 40 miles northwest of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.

Erik Vasys, an FBI spokesman in San Antonio, Texas, late Tuesday identified the Americans as Librado Pina Jr., 49, who owned the ranch, and his son Librado Pina III, 25, both of Laredo, Texas; and David Mueller, 45, of the Sweetwater, Texas, area.

Two ranch employees who weren't kidnapped said the attackers handcuffed the elder Pina and kept him apart from the other victims, Vasquez Estrada said. The assailants stole five all-terrain vehicles, two pickup trucks, furnishings, appliances and even food and wine from the ranch.

The kidnappers also seized the ranch's cook and another Mexican man at the ranch for a hunting trip.

Mueller was also hunting at the ranch, officials said.

The kidnappers do not appear to have made any ransom demand, Vasquez Estrada said.

Vasys wouldn't release details about the investigation, but characterized it as "ongoing, intense."

"We're working very closely with our Mexican counterparts," he said. "We're doing everything we can to get them back safely."

"The end of one law for all?"
By Innes Bowen
Producer, Law in Action

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Ethnic and religious courts are gaining ground in the UK. Will this lead to different justice for different people?

Aydarus Yusuf has lived in the UK for the past 15 years, but he feels more bound by the traditional law of his country of birth - Somalia - than he does by the law of England and Wales.

"Us Somalis, wherever we are in the world, we have our own law. It's not Islamic, it's not religious - it's just a cultural thing."

The 29-year-old youth worker wants to ensure that other members of his community remain subject to the law of their ancestors too - he helps convene an unofficial Somali court, or "gar", in south-east London.

Aydarus is not alone in this desire."

"Judge Strikes Down Bush on Terror Groups"
Nov 29th - 12:50am

By LINDA DEUTSCH AP Special Correspondent

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "LOS ANGELES (AP) - A federal judge struck down President Bush's authority to designate groups as terrorists, saying his post-Sept. 11 executive order was unconstitutionally vague, according to a ruling released Tuesday.

The Humanitarian Law Project had challenged Bush's order, which blocked all the assets of groups or individuals he named as "specially designated global terrorists" after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

"This law gave the president unfettered authority to create blacklists," said David Cole, a lawyer for the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Constitutional Rights that represented the group. "It was reminiscent of the McCarthy era."

The case centered on two groups, the Liberation Tigers, which seeks a separate homeland for the Tamil people in Sri Lanka, and Partiya Karkeran Kurdistan, a political organization representing the interests of Kurds in Turkey.

U.S. District Judge Audrey Collins enjoined the government from blocking the assets of the two groups. The same judge two years ago invalidated portions of the Patriot Act.

Both groups consider the Nov. 21 ruling a victory; both had been designated by the United States as foreign terrorist organizations.

Cole said the judge's ruling does not invalidate the hundreds of other designated terrorist groups on the list but "calls them into question."

Charles Miller, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Justice, said, "We are currently reviewing the decision and we have made no determination what the government's next step will be."

A White House spokeswoman declined to immediately comment. At the time of his order creating the list, Bush declared that the "grave acts of terrorism" and the "continuing and immediate threat of future attacks" constituted a national emergency."

"Report: Syrian network planned to kill Lebanese officials"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Al-Mustaqbal newspaper reports Lebanese security forces exposed network of 200 members which trained in refugee camps in Lebanon, planned to assassinate 36 senior Lebanese officials
Ali Waked
Published: 11.29.06, 08:20
The Lebanese security forces exposed a network which planned to assassinate 36 senior anti-Syrian Lebanese officials, the Lebanese newspaper al-Mustaqbal reported Wednesday morning.

The newspaper, which belongs to the family of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, who was assassinated last year, reported that the Lebanese security forces managed to arrest two of the network's key members.

According to the report, the investigation revealed that the network trained in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon and planned to execute a plot initiated by the Syrian government to assassinate 36 senior Lebanese officials.

According to the newspaper, the Syrian intelligence appointed a group belonging to the Fatah-Intifada organization to implement the plan.

The organization split from the Fatah movement in the 1970s and is led by Colonel Abu Moussa.

According to the report, about four days ago two detainees admitted to having been sent from Damascus to the al-Badawi and El-Bureij refugee camps in order to coordinate the activity with the Fatah-Intifada movement.

Most blatant violation of UN resolutions

The detainees, a Syrian and a Saudi, noted that they were part of a 200-member network which planned to execute the plan. The two were arrested by Lebanese security forces after they were suspected of a criminally-motivated murder at the al-Badawi refugee camp."
