Marylanders Know [Steele is winning big-time African American support]
Washington Times ^ | November 7, 2006 | Joel Mowbray

it seems a safe bet that Mr. Steele will win at least 20 percent of the black vote -- most polls show him at least in that range -- but it is the movement on the ground that most strongly suggests a Steele surge in the black vote. Mr. Steele won the enthusiastic backing of hip-hop legend Russell Simmons -- an unabashed Democrat -- and he's also received support from a number of leading black pastors, influential figures in their communities. These endorsements are particularly significant in light of the anger felt by many black Democrats in Maryland after what they considered a snubbing of Mr. Mfume in the primary. And Mr. Cardin certainly didn't help his cause when he pulled out of an NAACP-sponsored debate at the last minute. But the Republican has received no support more important than the backing of all five black members of the Prince George's County Council -- all of whom are elected Democrats. Mr. Steele hails from Largo, which is part of the vote-rich county, giving him an advantage already over his Baltimore-based opponent in terms of visibility in the Washington suburbs. Prince George's County, the wealthiest majority-minority county in the nation, is normally a reliable Democratic stronghold, but if Mr. Steele pulls over 35 percent there, his chance of victory skyrockets.

This is good news but I still think it is sad that 'big-time black vote' support is only 20%.

I hope Steele wins it but "20 percent of the black vote" is not what I would call "big-time".

Yes, but it's a beginning. I've thought for a long time that once AAs begin voting Republican, they will continue to do so and the trend will pick up a lot of steam. They tend to be religious and conservative, a lot of them.

"I hope Steele wins it but "20 percent of the black vote" is not what I would call "big-time"."

In this state it IS bigtime for a Republican, ANY republican to get 20% of the black vote.

But wait a minute --- don't the black voters know that Republicans run Congress like a plantation?

so then they shouldn't vote for any Republican because a black Republican can't represent them, right?

Does Michale Steele live on a plantation?

I heard this morning on the news about PG Co's complaining about a WRONG GOP ad indicating some PG leaders supporting Steele but they are not? (I.e., they're calling "fraud" on the ad.)

LOL. Spoken like a true out of stater. In Maryland (my home), a Republican getting 20% of the black vote is flipping landslide.

Democrats... The party of inclusion and tolerance... Whatever.

Just a small sample of democratic hatred and racism directed toward Mr. Steele:

'Party trumps race' for Steele foes
By S.A. Miller
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
November 2, 2005

Black Democratic leaders in Maryland say that racially tinged attacks against Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele in his bid for the U.S. Senate are fair because he is a conservative Republican.

...calling him an "Uncle Tom" and depicting him as a black-faced minstrel on a liberal Web log.

...Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) also obtained a copy of his credit report.

Lisa A. Gladden, a black Baltimore Democrat, said she does not expect her party to pull any punches, including racial jabs at Mr. Steele, in the race to replace retiring Democratic U.S. Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes. "...Party trumps race, especially on the national level,"

Delegate Salima Siler Marriott, a black Baltimore Democrat, said Mr. Steele invites comparisons to a slave who loves his cruel master or a cookie that is black on the outside and white inside because his conservative political philosophy is, in her view, anti-black.

"Because he is a conservative, he is different than most public blacks, and he is different than most people in our community," she said. "His politics are not in the best interest of the masses of black people."

In 2001, Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. called Mr. Steele an "Uncle Tom,"

This week, the News Blog -- a liberal Web log run by Steve Gilliard, a black New Yorker -- removed a doctored photo of Mr. Steele that depicted him as a black-faced minstrel.
However, the blog has kept its headline "Simple Sambo wants to move to the big house."

I think the point was that his rock-bottom support is 20%. The story is saying that he will be surging upwards from there...
