He got my vote, gald to see he is winning. Also, you're right, I have lived south of Puyallup for over 16 years now (used to live in North Bend/Snoqualmie), and this place is REALLY growing. We're even getting a Wal-Mart! Progress is good, I suppose, but the traffic on Meridian sure SUCKS!

Has anyone else heard about all the bags of absentee ballots (in King County) that have broken zippers and compromised seals (over 20,000 absentee ballots). Last I heard, they were contemplating whether or not to even COUNT them! Wonder if Darcy will demand they be counted? Could be interesting.

Wonder what would happen if the cowardly Republicans had spine enough to look into vote fraud in all the close elections?

Hi DT-

"...So is Reichert a conservative Republican or another RINO?..."

That's my question, too. Some of these so-called Republicans leave one shaking their head in disbelief!

He's an amalgam......he's a very conservative Christian (I've gone to his church)....but, he votes liberal on many things......I live in his district....actually I sat behind him in High School classes.....LOL....BUT....most would probably call him a RINO if you look at his voting record.

"Hayworth got crushed."

In whose universe? All he needs is 5818 to take it. I wouldn't consider that "crushed". But then I'm not a Democrat.

Sorry I won't believe it until all the overstuffed bags of ballots are all counted and Burner does not ask for a recount. Sorry been burned too many times. I hope Reichert will prevail.

interesting Hildy -- doesn't jive with what CH5 news in Phoenix said at noon, they had the uncounted for Maricopa County at 185,000. I saw an election blog today I can only assume is out of ASU that is calling him all sorts of names for not conceeding the election.... they are gleeful that he 'lost.' I really, really hope he pulls it out... especially with Mitchell went to DC to have his picture taken with the incoming Freshman class of '06.

"Of course, that should have happened in 04!"

I agree with that and add that it should have happened in 2000 as well. Slade should have won that race over Maria, and, I heard there were shennanigans going on then, too. Wouldn't surprise me given the cr*pola that happened in the '04 election!

Once again, if JD loses we can thank all the Arizonan's who voted Libertarian in his district. Looks like just about the right amount to put him over the top.

I live here and believe it or not, the former chairman of the WA state democrat party, has already cautioned Burner not to force a recount, in fact, he told her that now was the time to concede and to plan for 2010.

Of course, she has of yet to follow his advice.

I hate gerrymandering regardless of the party. They should throw a grid onto a map and be done with it. Some of the districts here are so large that the official can't really take care of the entire area.

"a RINO if you look at his voting record."

How else could he get elected in the eastern block of the Seattle Soviet?

Then again, there is that handy bag of --oops! Lookie more darn ballots that we, forgot, yeah that's it, to count.

From soundpolitics.com:

Reichert declared winner, Burner refuses to concede

State Congressional Delegation News
by Stefan Sharkansky, 07:52 PM Nov 13, 2006

The Seattle Times "Developing News" box on the home page at this writing says that Reichert has "declared victory". The Associated Press now reports that Dave Reichert has been re-elected, but

Burner's campaign refused to concede the race, saying it believed the Democrat could stay alive after some 20,000 absentee ballots dropped off at polling sites are counted.
...
It was unclear how many of the ballots were from the state's 8th District, but the Burner campaign said heavy turnout from strongly Democratic areas could boost her fortunes.
Far be it from me to call a race conclusively over before either all the votes are counted or one of the candidates concedes, but Burner doesn't have much basis to remain hopeful.

King and Pierce Counties just reported their Monday numbers (see Sec. of State's site)

Reichert's overall lead has increased to 4,727 votes, or 2.27% (51.14% - 48.86%)

Reichert expanded his lead in Pierce by 560 votes out of 3,344 new ballots, a margin of 16.75%, his strongest daily margin yet. His overall margin in Pierce County is now 13.79%. He also gained a net 653 votes in King County, a daily margin of nearly 6% for Reichert. He's now ahead in King County by 9 votes.

How could Darcy Burner win at this point? King County has tabulated about 34,000 ballots since Burner's campaign estimated Thursday that there were 70,000 ballots left there. Even if Pierce County doesn't add another vote to Reichert's lead, Burner would need to win the remaining King County ballots by a 13.2% margin, 56.6% - 43.4%.

"Ballot-bag problems may slow counting of 8th District votes"

State Congressional Delegation News
by Stefan Sharkansky, 07:01 AM Nov 12, 2006
I'm not blogging today but this deserves a mention:

King County Elections staff said about 100 bags -- containing up to 20,000 absentee ballots that had been dropped off at polling sites on Election Day -- remain uncounted because of an array of problems caused by the bags' being overstuffed.

Jim Buck, King County's interim elections director, acknowledged that the problems -- including broken zippers and unclosed bag seals -- could potentially have allowed ballots to be cast after voting ended.

Not clear yet whether any of the ballots are actually ineligible, and it's unlikely there could be nearly enough ballots to reverse Reichert's lead. But Darcy Burner is encouraged
"If you were going to have a Democrat win this district ... this would be the way it would play out," she said.
What would Democrats do without ballots of questionable provenance?
