:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Fighting Jihad in Cyberspace
-Full Story-

The setting is familiar to anyone who watches the evening news. A large, executive-style desk, a laptop perched on top, a logo in the background and a screen showing shifting images to reinforce the newsreader's message. The only difference is the presenter, who is swathed in an Arab headdress and masked to hide his identity, and the subject of the broadcast, a call for an Islamic state for Iraq and a vow to use Iraq as a launching pad to crush the "Zionists" in Israel.

Welcome to the "Voice of the Caliphate", the latest offering from the Global Islamic Media Front, widely regarded as the mouthpiece of al-Qaeda and the worldwide jihadist movement.

Distributed over the internet, the mock news format is just one of many employed by al-Qaeda's highly sophisticated propaganda arm.

FBI divers search Spokane River

The FBI’s specially trained underwater evidence recovery team began searching a section of the Spokane River on Tuesday, apparently looking for a firearm.

The 12-member Underwater Search and Evidence Recovery Team, called U-SERT, was searching the bottom of the river on both sides of the Seven-Mile Bridge, northwest of the city, said FBI supervisor Frank Harrill.

Members of the dive team are from Los Angeles, Miami, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere, Harrill said.

He wouldn’t comment on the specific case or what led the FBI to mobilize the dive team for the search, expected to last through Wednesday and possibly into Thursday.(snip)

Disturbing Story Of Portland Truck Driver And ID Theft -

Why Isn’t The FBI And Homeland Security Following Up?
Portland talk-show host Lars larson is following a story here in the Northwest that should have everyone concerned and taking notice – especially in light of another story involving a truck-driving student in custody after raising suspicions when he wasn’t interested in learning how to back up his rig:

Long time portland truck driver John Cecil Smith is threatened with revocation of his commercial drivers license (CDL).

DMV Oregon tells him that he will lose his license for not paying a ticket (likely a moving violation) in New York.

Mr. Smith has never been to New York.

The DMV refused to help him, telling him that he had to prove that he WASN’T the man who failed to ay the ticket.

When Lars and his staff challenged the DMV, they finally checked into the situation, and found a man in NYC had been using the same name, dob, ssn, etc., for CDL duplicate.

Lars alerted the FBI, U.S. attorney and Homeland Security – and to this point none have shown much interest in the case.

OKC bomber/mass-murdered Tim Mcveigh had a two ton truck - CDL holders can drive an 40 ton truck that looks like a million other trucks on the highway.

Scared yet?

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "...apparently looking for a firearem."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Members of the dive team are from Los Angeles, Miami, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere, Harrill said."

That's a lot of manpower for a firearm.

And looking at this snippet...this is a lot more manpower for a just a firearm In my opinion...(I could be wrong.):

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Some items had been recovered at midday Tuesday, but the FBI official declined to elaborate, saying the search would continue.

The FBI dive team was receiving ground assistance from FBI agents from Spokane and Seattle, and logistical support from the Spokane County Water Rescue Team, composed of volunteers and a sheriff’s deputy coordinator."

Thanks for the info Velveeta. I've searched and can't find any info other than the article you posted. Seems odd.

Perhaps there will be something this evening on the Spokane news. I'll search websites again this evening.

Judge upholds detainee rights terror law
Associated Press ^ | December 13, 2006 | Matt Apuzzo

Posted on 12/13/2006 1:50:24 PM PST by Zakeet

WASHINGTON - A federal judge upheld the Bush administration's new terrorism law Wednesday, agreeing that Guantanamo Bay detainees do not have the right to challenge their imprisonment in U.S. courts.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge James Robertson rejects a legal challenge by Salim Ahmed Hamdan, a former driver for Osama bin Laden whose case prompted the Supreme Court to strike down the Bush administration's policy on detainees last year.

Following that ruling, Bush pushed for and got a new law that established military commissions to try enemy combatants and stripped them of the right to seek their freedom in U.S. courts.

Robertson said Congress clearly intended to keep cases such as Hamdan's out of federal courts and, because of that, he no longer has jurisdiction to hear it.

The ruling is a legal victory for the Bush administration, which has been fending off criticism of the new law from Democrats and civil libertarians.

Philippines says foils bomb plot in the south
Wed 13 Dec 2006

MANILA
Philippine security forces said on Wednesday they may have foiled a plot to bomb "soft targets" in Davao, a crowded southern port city, after seizing a pipe bomb during a raid on a suspected hideout of Muslim rebels.

Military spokesman Major Augusto dela Pena said soldiers recovered an improvised explosive device late on Monday near Tagum City, on the southern island of Mindanao.

Two suspected members of a rogue faction of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), who were supposed to transport the crude bomb to Davao City, escaped under cover of darkness.

Move to bring genocide case against Ahmadinejad as Iran president repeats call to wipe out Israel
Wednesday December 13, 2006

The outgoing US ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, is backing a call for the president of Iran to be charged with inciting genocide because of his speeches advocating the destruction of the state of Israel. Barely a week after he announced his resignation from the UN post, Mr Bolton will appear tomorrow among a panel of diplomats and lawyers calling for Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to be prosecuted. The panel has been convened by a Jewish umbrella group in the US, the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organisations.

"Dodd Plans Talks With Middle East Leaders"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Connecticut's other senator, Chris Dodd (D), is planning a trip to the Middle East to conduct what the Hartford Courant calls "his own Middle East peace talks."

And, he's bringing John Kerry with him. The two plan to talk to leaders in Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel.

The subheadline to the above linked article says, "Kerry to Join Effort in Sensitive Territory." If it's sensitivity that Dodd wants, he may want to rethink his choice of traveling partner.

Call me cynical, but I find it somewhat pretentious when two senators, both with presidential ambitions, decide to travel to a highly unstable area of the world with the hopes that perhaps they can succeed where others with more qualifications for such activities have failed."

"Syrian Ambassador Slams US at CAIR-Hosted Conference"
By Monisha Bansal

December 13, 2006

(CNSNews.com) -

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Daniel Pipes, a critic of CAIR and director of the Middle East Forum, called CAIR's sponsorship of Moustapha "surprising."

"CAIR's foreign policy is a work in progress," Pipes told Cybercast News Service. "They know very well where they stand domestically, but it's unclear what CAIR's world view is.

"There is a bit of unpredictability and incoherency," he said.

"That it [CAIR] would be working with the Syrian regime is a bit surprising. That they would be sponsoring this Syrian official is a bit incoherent."

CAIR board chairman Parvez Ahmed Tuesday called the war in Iraq a "pure unadulterated projection of raw power" and said the U.S. should withdraw its forces immediately."

Police, Soldiers Respond to Explosions Near Baghdad Mosques

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Dec. 13, 2006 – Iraqi police responded to several explosions at both Sunni and Shiite mosques in Baghdad today.
A car bomb exploded across the street from the Kamalia mosque, a Shiite mosque in the New Baghdad section of eastern Baghdad, around 9:45 a.m.

Forces from 4th Brigade, 1st National Police Division, supported by coalition forces, were on the scene for support. U.S. soldiers from 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, were also called for support to conduct a damage assessment on the mosque, U.S. officials said.

Later in the day, U.S. soldiers from 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, responded after hearing an explosion at the al-Samouri mosque, a Sunni mosque in the eastern part of the city, not far from the Kamalia mosque. The soldiers had been conducting operations nearby. The patrol confirmed that two car bombs detonated in the street.

The unit assisted the Iraqi police in securing the area and reported that the explosions did not damage the mosque.

Elsewhere today, coalition forces detained six suspected terrorists and seized a weapons cache near Tikrit while seeking a terrorist associated with al Qaeda in Iraq. Intelligence reports also indicated that insurgents were producing improvised explosive devices in the targeted area.

When ground forces searched the targeted building, they discovered a weapons cache consisting of machine guns, pistols, rocket-propelled-grenade boosters, and a sniper-rifle scope. The forces also found the equivalent of more than $200,000 in Iraqi dinar and more than $160,000 in U.S. currency.

In other news from Iraq, an Iraqi army patrol accompanied by coalition forces discovered three vehicle bombs in the Mansour district of western Baghdad yesterday. Soldiers of 2nd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, teamed with U.S. soldiers from 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, were searching a building when they found one car bomb and two motorcycle bombs. They also discovered additional vehicle-bomb-making materials and five rifles. An explosive ordnance disposal team disabled the bombs.

A day earlier, Iraqi troops from 2nd Battalion, 6th Iraqi Army Division, arrested five suspected terrorists for criminal activity near a pharmacy college in the eastern Baghdad neighborhood of Rusafa on Dec. 11. The Iraqi unit was sent out to investigate a report of the kidnapping of several university students. During the patrol, the soldiers spotted and detained five men engaged in illegal activity at the university.

The men were armed with pistols and ammunition. The men also had fake university police badges. The detainees said they were university police, but were spotted carrying weapons, and the car they were using had civilian license plates.

Also on Dec. 11, an Iraqi National Police sentry destroyed a suicide car bomb as it attempted to enter the police barracks in Baghdad’s Jazar neighborhood. Brig. Gen. Ghazwan Sharif Abd-al-Hamid, the national police commander in the area, said a blue van approached the entrance to the barracks during the morning attack and failed to stop when the sentry signaled it to do so. The sentry fired into the speeding van, which ran into two parked police vehicles and exploded.

Six policemen were injured and two police vehicles destroyed in the attack. Officials estimated ¬that the van contained more than 300 pounds of explosives.

Off topic but odd:

1,000 mallard ducks die along Idaho creek bed, cause unknown
3:00 p.m. December 13, 2006

BOISE, Idaho – More than 1,000 mallard ducks have died in a bizarre cluster along a southeastern Idaho creek bed, puzzling wildlife agencies.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security were testing tissue samples Wednesday, hoping to rule out an avian flu outbreak.

The ducks mysteriously began dying last week around Land Springs Creek, near the remote town of Oakley, about 180 miles southeast of Boise.

Some migratory mallards from Canada and their local cousins were still perishing at the creek Wednesday, staggering and struggling to breathe before collapsing, said Dave Parrish, regional supervisor for Fish and Game.

“I've never seen anything like this in 20 years here,” he said. “There were dead mallards everywhere – in the water and on the banks. It was odd, they were in a very small area.”

Lawyer lays out alleged terror links
TORONTO (Dec 13, 2006)

A Hamilton man was an Islamic fighter in Bosnia and had ties to international jihadists when he willingly handed over his passport to an alleged terrorist, the lawyer representing France in an extradition hearing said in his final arguments yesterday.

Howard Piafsky argues Abdellah Ouzghar, 41, should be sent to France where he was convicted in absentia and sentenced to five years in prison for being part of a passport forgery ring. Piafsky said the evidence paints a "highly incriminating picture."

Ouzghar's lawyer is expected to conclude his arguments today and the judge is then expected to reserve her decision. If she commits Ouzghar to extradition, the case is sent to the minister of justice. Ouzghar can appeal the judge's and minister's decisions.

Piafsky said yesterday that Ouzghar was part of the infamous Mujahedeen Battalion in Bosnia. That's where Piafsky argues Ouzghar, a former computer programmer with Moroccan and Canadian citizenship, met his co-conspirators, including terror suspect Zoheir Choulah. Choulah was caught with Ouzghar's passport in 1996 at the Taiwanese border. He told French authorities he met Ouzghar in Bosnia where they fought.

I wonder why the location had to be relative to Boise. The nearest major city is Twin Falls. It's about 100 miles southwest of where I live. Pull up a MapQuest view of Oakley and switch to aerial view. Lots of farms abutting the creek that passes southeast of the town. My bet is a pesticide spill into the creek at a time when the ducks were roosting.
