WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota was undergoing brain surgery Wednesday night at George Washington University Hospital after being hospitalized earlier in the day due to stroke-like symptoms, two Democratic sources familiar with his condition told CNN.
Johnson, 59, was taken to the hospital Wednesday morning after he appeared to suffer stroke-like symptoms, although a spokeswoman for the senator said subsequent evaluation showed he did not suffer a stroke or a heart attack. Staffers told CNN Johnson was conscious when he was transported to the hospital.
.... when "his speech pattern slipped off."
Fisher said the senator was able to walk back to his office in the Hart Senate Office Building, then began having problems with his right arm. He thought he was all right, she said, and went to his desk, but came out a few minutes later and "it was apparent he needed help." (Posted 11:13 p.m.)

Haha, nice to hear. I wish you a good night, and yes, it´s almost 10 am here. So I´m soon preparing to go to lunch. ;-)
My hope is that at some point, when Leahy & Co. (Schumer, Kennedy, Durbin...) step over the line yet again, like blocking a good judicial nominee and branding him/her "extreme" and "far-right", Nebraska's Ben Nelson will flip over to GOP and change the committees makeup by transferring control. It will be way more effective and clean blow to the Dems' psyche, and will also loudly serve notice to many voters in generally conservative (I hate to call them "red") states like MT, ND, SD, and others of what the Dems leadership agenda is and what the vote for a "conservative" Dem actually means to the numbers in the Senate and House. Sometimes (well, often) I think that conservative voters in mainly rural states either can't count, or just don't bother to connect the dots between their vote for a good ol' "conservative" Democrat back at home and what that means to agenda and decisions in Washington, DC. Daschle and some others come to mind.
It's Karl Rove & George Bush's fault. They say so on DU.
You're not series?
I wouldn't be surprised if it's a cerebral aneurism. They say they caught it early, whatever it was. Looks to me like the chances are that he could be fully recovered soon.
We'll see.
Though, I wonder - is it normal to do surgery in the dead of night, in anything but the must urgent of cases?
I mean, I'd figure that - ideally - you'd want to do it when people are less tired and less prone to making errors.
As I said before, I will say it again - my prayer is that the Lord's will be done.
I wish no ill on this man.
While I'm trying to avoid ghoulish political posturing over a man's life and health, I am happy about one thing and that is that it shuts up the proud mouths of the Democrats for now.
The night before this happened, I was reading a USA Today interview with Harry Reid and was quite grieved to read of his boastful talk and brazenly disrespectful comments about and toward President Bush. Senator Reid really has some things to think about now. His coalition majority is so fragile, it could fall apart in a heartbeat - literally. He should also remember that all top political officeholders who've risen up against him in the past haven't met with such great fates - think of Tom Daschle, Dick Gephardt, Al Gore, Terry McAuliffe and John Kerry.
I would be very disapointed if God chose sides in the world of politics. The likelyhood is neither party "gets it".
The votes didn't exactly fall from the sky. It was the last precinct or county reporting (I don't remember which), that contained the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Historically, an extremely democrat stronghold, and the results very late in the night, or very early the next day, swung the election from Thune, to Johnson. The margin had been thin all night, and it didn't take much to swing the other way, and as we see, in the long run, brought a very good result just a couple of years later. By by, Tommy Two Tongues.
It was the last precinct reporting, which just happened to be the one to put Johnson over the top, which just happened to have twice the number of votes cast as in the last Senatorial election, which just happened to break for Johnson by the overwhelming numbers that he needed to win.
It very much resembled the antics of another Johnson.
The main reason, IMHO, why it wasn't pursued was that it involved minorities who would have screamed to no end. But, I'm familiar with Indian Reserve-style politics. Anyone who thinks that there wasn't corruption is a fool.
"Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces, but let us judge not, that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered. That of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has His own purposes."
He was a "weekend warrior" who would lay off his blood pressure meds so he could drink on the weekends and stay sober during the week. I guess regular intervals of uncontrolled B/P... finally weakened the blood vessels in his brain.
He's not going to resign even if their is massive brain damage. A brain is not a required component for voting with the Democrats. In fact, it's somewhat of a hindrance.
aren't we assuming too much if we think that the Governor would appoint a Republican?
It was the first thought on my mind, and no one could fault the logic, despite the fact that, were the same situation on the other side of the isle, you and I both know, the thought never would enter their minds. I couldn't begin to second guess this one.
Hope you´re right.
I don't think Harry Reid thinks as deep as you might give him credit for. JMHO :)
Exactly, and I believe would lead immediately to the Governor nominating Mrs. Johnson to the seat.
AMEN! and their are those who would think badly of the Republican Party for that type of attitude.
If it was fraud, and that is a huge IF, it was not Tim Johnson's fraud. He won because the Pine Ridge Indian reservation voted democrat as they alway do. The margins had been very thin the entire election night, and the vote from Pine Ridge early the next morning, swung the margin to Mr. Johnson, which in the long run proved very worthwhile, as two years later it was by by, tommy two tongues daschle.
