Explosions Rocks U.S. Embassy in Athens

Associated Press

Friday, January 12, 2007

ATHENS, Greece - Police cordoned off streets around the U.S. Embassy in Athens early Friday after an explosion inside the embassy compound.

Authorities searched nearby apartment buildings and a hospital amid reports that an explosive device may have been fired at the building. The blast smashed glass in the front of the building, near the U.S. emblem of the embassy.

"I heard a loud bang I didn't realize what was going on," said Giorgos Yiannoulis, who runs a kiosk near the embassy.

"Attack on US embassy is act of terrorism-Greek police"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The shot was fired from the street level." It has been reported that the office of the U.S. ambassador might be situated near the room.

According to Greek TV and radio broadcasting channels, the missile might be fired from the building, situated in front of the embassy. They report that traces of the launching of the missile were found in the basement of the building, but the launching device itself was not found.

Most probably, the terrorists took it away with them. The missile might be launched as well from a car passing by the road."

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Americans are doing their own investigation of the incident. They allowed only one representative of the Greek anti-terrorist service to enter the embassy building so far. Greek Minister of Public Order Vyron Polydoras informed the Greek leaders of the incident."

"Rocket attack at U.S. embassy in Athens"
By Karolos Grohmann

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "ATHENS (Reuters) - Assailants fired a rocket at the U.S. embassy in Athens on Friday but no one was hurt in the attack, which anonymous callers said was staged by Greek leftists, authorities said.

In the most serious attack against the mission in 10 years, the small rocket launched from across the street shattered windows and woke up nearby residents in the central Athens area at 5:58 AM (3:58 a.m. British time).

"There is one or two anonymous phone calls which claim that the Revolutionary Struggle was behind the attack," Public Order Minister Byron Polydoras told reporters outside the embassy.

The leftist guerrilla group has emerged as the most serious domestic threat since the dismantling of the deadly November 17 group in 2002. It claimed an assassination attempt on Greece's Culture Minister last May and a bomb at the Economy Ministry which wounded two people and damaged buildings 13 months ago.

"I am treating this as a very serious attack," U.S. ambassador to Athens, Charles Ries, told reporters outside the mission. "The embassy was attacked in a senseless act of violence. There were no injuries."

Greek police said the rocket was launched from a building across the road from the mission, which is often the target of Greek protests and demonstrations, and landed inside a toilet on the third floor.

"The projectile caused slight damage to the facade's glass and the ceiling," police said in a statement."

"What's your take on this?"

Greek anarchists, most likely but it could be Mohammedans. There are quite a number of them in Athens these days. My bet though is anarchists.

"Nope, lefty Greeks."

Wow. These can pull off what Jihadists seem unable to do outside of Spain.

That said, I'm not so impressed with this attack. A single RPG?
Then the launcher was dropped and the assailants ran like girls.
A jihadist would have gotten 4 or 5 shots off before he ran like a girl.
But Euro-terrorists like Euroweenies everywhere are esentially wimps. He likely fired off the only RPG the group could afford.

Revolutionary Struggle has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Revolutionary Struggle:

The group, which espouses communism, has continued its anti-Western stance after the Cold War. November 17 bitterly opposes Greek participation in NATO. It also favors ousting U.S. military bases from Greek territory, severing Greece ’s ties with the European Union, removing the Turkish military presence from Cyprus , and launching an anti-capitalist popular uprising against the Greek middle and upper-classes. In December 2000, after killing a British general, the group released a communiqué defending itself against mounting public criticism by trying to appeal to populist, pro-Serb sentiments and urging Greeks to defy the government’s counterterrorism efforts.

no its not, this is the same left wing nuts which were left over from 1951. They are just trying to scare the tourism industry.

This is not the sercurity or the environment of 20 years ago. I was there 20 years ago, it could be they kept you on the plane for other reasons.
