Nuclear Blast on TV's '24' Causes Fallout for Fox (PC crybaby alert)
ABC News ^ | 1/15/07

Posted on 01/16/2007 6:06:00 AM PST by rintense

"How much longer? I hear someone," says the nervous terrorist with a heavy Middle Eastern accent, just before U.S. agents storm a warehouse where a nuclear device is being assembled. Confusion reigns, drama builds, the device is detonated and a mushroom cloud looms over Los Angeles. Such is primetime television in the age of terrorism, or as some critics charge, has "24" gone too far?

"It's the closest television comes to roller coasters," said David Bianculli, television critic for the New York Daily News. "It works well dramatically, and as far as feeding fears, that's what '24' is all about."

Sut Jhally, co-producer and co-director of the film "Hijacking Catastrophe," says the dramatic action in the show creates a dangerous climate in which the public loses some of its perspective on what's real and what's not. Of course that may be a minority opinion given the show's enormous popularity.

LOL! I thought the same. Morris doesn't seem to be her type, too old . He is supposed to be her ex husband and I don't trust him.

Not on the subways in NYC, you pay to enter the station but the LIRR has ticket takers. THey walk through the cars a few times per trip.

"Television shows like '24' also reinforce stereotypes about Arabs, he said, and in this episode connections are drawn between terrorism, Arabs and nuclear war. With the U.S. wrestling with Iran over its nuclear capabilities, these associations are dangerous, he said."

Interesting non-sequitar.

Not really. Iranians are not Arab.

One thing's for sure, no need to worry about the other 4 nukes. The one man who can put them together blew himself up.

I wouldn't count on that.

That you have not watched the show before leaves your contributions a bit light in the loafers. This show has always taken extremes and done it well. It has shown bad Muslims as well as people who want to do the right thing. It has also shown corruption of government power, the damage that unchecked liberalism and corporate greed can present and what weak minded leadership offers. Nothing is ever what it seems.

However, if you were really paying attention last night and consider yourself a non liberal the show points out that there are some seriously bad actors in the Arab community and they have infested our communities. (Europe has a worse problem).

Wayne Logan = Barak Obama

Nope. Unfortunately Wayne Palmer = just about every candidate I see for 2008 so far, with the possible exception of Giuliani.

"Wasn't it ABC who gave us "The Morning After" about a Soviet strike all across the USA? That was over 10 years ago."

"The Day After" was an ABC drama televised at precisely the time Reagan was fighting to introduce intermediate-range nuclear weapons in Europe. And it was blatantly intended to influence public opinion on that subject. I remember Peter Jennings pontificating about the show on the Evening News, as though that made it important. The show was a complete bomb (no pun intended).

Yes a character just like OBAMA. There is no mention over the last seasons of him EVER holding public office. He doesn't have the background other than that He was the brother of a beloved dead ex President. He got the popular vote.

It's basically a "reality" show.

Sure, in a parallel universe perhaps. A badly written season long Tom Clancy novel. Just what we need. Course if we didn't have that another Law & Order clone would pop up in that time slot. I don't know which would be worse

Actually in season 2 there was a whole sub plot about the perfect little American family, and the 'pretty' daughter is marrying an Arab, a wealthy one. Is he or isn't he a terrorist? There are many superficial signs that point to it. I think the lesson of that season was "don't judge a book by its cover".

"Fear has been used to paralyze people's intellects," said Jhally. "If they can scare people, almost anything becomes possible. When people are afraid their brains shut off and it makes you confused and want easy solutions."

Isn't that what the terrorists think?

Not good at all, MOF such unprofessional behaviour strikes me as out of character for him

I don't endorse Curtis' actions. I merely state that, unlike the racist neighbor, he has some justification for wanting to kill Assad. His men were slaughtered like pigs by Assad's people.

Exactly right. TV war good, real war bad. Oh, and a rumor about something that someone may have overheard in a crowded disco which could possibly have referred to Natalie Holloway or someone else can be discussed for months. But a in depth report about the nuclear weapsons research program Khadafyi WAS running for Saddam in Libya? NOT A PEEP.

has "24" gone too far?

"24" jumps the shark about 6 times in every episode.

I was disappointed by the Jack's return from China. So freaking lame! I thought that he would jump overboard in mid-ocean, hitch a ride on a right whale, and email Chloe to send a schematic of the ocean floor to his trusty PDA (which of course he kept secreted from the Chinese) to find out which submarines are in the area. Chloe tells him that the closest sub is a Russian, but that's OK as Jack saved the sub captain's life in a previous episode.

"Television shows like '24' also reinforce stereotypes about Arabs"

The stereotype that Arabs participate in acts of terrorism? Where would people get that idea?

The new President on "24" has to be a democrat He is black. Does that give you a hint.

There once was a white president on 24. He was utterly spineless, his wife was a drunk, and eventually he turned traitor, as I recall.
