Russia: Lithuanian demands 'groundless'
MOSCOW, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Russian leaders said Thursday that Lithuania has no chance of getting reparations for its years in the former Soviet Union.
The Lithuanian parliament passed a resolution this week asking for payment. Russian officials said the issue is "closed," the Novosti news agency reported.
"Our position is well known and has been stated repeatedly," the foreign ministry said in a statement. "The assertions about Lithuania's 'occupation' by the Soviet Union and the related claims ignore all legal, historical and political realities, and are therefore utterly groundless."
In 2000, Lithuanian legislators authorized a committee to determine how much Russia should pay. The panel calculated damages of $28 million.
That's about $9 per person for each Lithuanian.
Come on, Putin. Give them each a gift coupon to McDonalds. It's the least you can do for occupying their country for 50 years.
Huh!!! Lithuania lost 780,000 of its citizens during Soviet occupation. The Soviet government killed or deported to Siberia 120,000 to 300,000 people. 28,000 to 35,000 prisoners were killed, or died of the hardships in the penal camps or gulags. 21,500 Lithuanians lost their lives in the fight against Soviet oppression. Another 5,000 civilians were executed. A great number of Lithuanians chose to go into exile.
I wouldn't think the Russians would fess up to this and try to make things right for their past attrocities. What do you expect for Godless athiests!

...and history repeats itself. Do you really think that this is the case. I was thinking they were reverting back to Stalinistic communism, like the old days. Either way, I just want them to leave Lithuania and the Baltic States alone! Maybe Angelas' idea of US bases and missile protection will hold them at bay or just provide them the means and the training. Lithuanians are smart, determined and courageous people. Their nation is dwarfed by Russia though.

I used to think that Russia could be a civilized country relatively soon after the fall of Communism. I now see that it's going to take at least a century before Russia is sufficiently mature to be treated as anything more than the international version of a bully.

Yes I do. To me, Russians are done with communism. Every russian I have ever met has told me that communism was a mistake.
I can't source them but I remember a news service quoting that Putin had a copy of the Imperial Crown made for himself. I've also heard that he might have some distant relation to the Romanovs but that might be just internet urban legends. Gary might be able to add to this.
Being an American, it's hard to understand why somebody would want to live in a dictatorship or even a monarchy. My Grandparents had it with living in Lithuania when it was under control of Tsarist Russia and came to the US for political and economic freedom. I hope that the Russians leave the Baltic States alone!
