Most U.S. workers not in 'dream jobs,' survey says

More than four out of five U.S. workers do not have their dream jobs, which most people describe as work that is fun, according to a survey released on Thursday.

Salary was one of the least important requirements of a dream job, cited by just 12 percent of respondents in the survey by CareerBuilder.com, an online job site, and The Walt Disney Co , which is holding a contest in which winners can get a chance to work at a Disney theme park job for a day.

...Fields with the least number of workers with dream jobs were accommodations and food services at 9 percent, manufacturing at 9 percent and retail at 10 percent.

Among major U.S. cities, workers in Boston had the highest incidence of feeling they have their dream jobs, at 37 percent, followed by Sacramento at 26 percent, San Francisco at 23 percent, Philadelphia at 22 percent, Salt Lake City at 20 percent, and Dallas and Portland, both at 19 percent.

...Asked what they had wanted to be as adults when they were children, 22 percent of people surveyed said firefighter, 17 percent said princess and 16 percent said professional dancer. An equal number of people -- 14 percent -- wanted to be cowboy or president.

I don't watch TV often, except in bars and when I travel. But it really does seem to be from a different planet. It either celebrates complete ignorance or features shows about stuff/wealth.

If it was fun, they wouldn't have to pay you because someone else would do it for free.

Me neither. I do spend a lot of time here :-) but much of FR at least stimulates the mind. A lot of FReepers say they don't watch much TV, which is encouraging.

My dream job would be a professional surfer or drag racer...not gonna happen.

Even though I have what it takes, when I was in high school, my Father talked me out of following the money and becoming a porn star.

As frustrated as I was, later in life I found his discipline to be a most appreciative discipline. ; )

Television is very, very bad. Just going through the channels is like being inside an insane person's head.

My dream job is to lounge around on the deck of my incredibly rich and sweet-natured husband's yacht (except when I am buying antiques for one of our enormous mansions or riding my imported Portuguese dressage stallions or having my nails done). Yes, I'd like to be paid to do that stuff.

Wait, do you realize what this means? It means I want to be John Kerry!

It's cute that girls want to be a princess when they grow up. Too bad there aren't too many positions available.

I became a doctor and now I wish I hadn't. It's way too much work and sacrifice, for too much aggravation, always being afraid of a lawsuit, for way too little pay.

Then they find they are genuinely working for the worst bastard they ever encountered.

Oh believe me I know. Which is why I am still working for someone else and not for myself.

I do run a small business on the side and I am the boss from hell. I make me work overtime, I am always on call, and as for sick days forget it. If I can get out of bed I demand that I get to work. And there is no way I pay me what I am worth.

Yes, I understand that. People believe physicians have an interesting job and make lots of money. Well they do, but this requires extraordinary hours not only in practice but in continuing education. Eventually, fatigue and boredom are definite challenges.

I found that if I ceased identifying with the MD degree and focused on other things, everything improved but my bottom line. I then found I could have alternate careers tangentially or not all associated with medicine. Spirits and income improved.

Physicians can make good investors if they put their minds to it. Dealing with multiple variables and recognizing the possibility of failure is quite similar to what a business person faces. Usually, the docs relate to some stock market guru (which is okay) but are left following rather than leading. Most interesting for many physicians is real estate. The concept of leverage, understanding currency depreciation, the rule of 72 and so forth can be learned reasonably quickly. Usually, physicians are well aware of a given area and its possibilities. The reason more don't invest in real estate is that they must be responsible for the properties and very few want to be landlords.

Physicians, if they fail to master the duties of an investor or business person often fall into the category of what a long ago stock broker said was their chief characteristic--white meat for the financial charlatans. So one must be careful. If all else fails or you lose interest in making money or practicing medicine you can always become what I call a "an amateur scholar" and post on FR.

It becomes significantly less cute when they hit their 20s and still want to be a princess.

Sure, it can. I think of my job that way and I wouldn't have it any other way.

FYI. Anybody who can explain this gets a free ping.

I was a princess for a few years and it's not all that it's cracked up to be. So I got a new job.
