Most U.S. workers not in 'dream jobs,' survey says

More than four out of five U.S. workers do not have their dream jobs, which most people describe as work that is fun, according to a survey released on Thursday.

Salary was one of the least important requirements of a dream job, cited by just 12 percent of respondents in the survey by CareerBuilder.com, an online job site, and The Walt Disney Co , which is holding a contest in which winners can get a chance to work at a Disney theme park job for a day.

...Fields with the least number of workers with dream jobs were accommodations and food services at 9 percent, manufacturing at 9 percent and retail at 10 percent.

Among major U.S. cities, workers in Boston had the highest incidence of feeling they have their dream jobs, at 37 percent, followed by Sacramento at 26 percent, San Francisco at 23 percent, Philadelphia at 22 percent, Salt Lake City at 20 percent, and Dallas and Portland, both at 19 percent.

...Asked what they had wanted to be as adults when they were children, 22 percent of people surveyed said firefighter, 17 percent said princess and 16 percent said professional dancer. An equal number of people -- 14 percent -- wanted to be cowboy or president.

Unless they go a little wild.

There just aren't 150 Million jobs artfully applying sand to swimsuit edition models butts. SI has had my application for the better part of two decades and not an interview yet.

Why is that a surprise to anyone? We formed most of our dreams when we were young and stupid.

You Wrote: "When Hillary becomes President then we all get our dream jobs!!!"

So your idea of a dream job is making gravel from large rocks? For everyone?

It would be better if she never gets anywhere the White House.

Television is very, very bad. Just going through the channels is like being inside an insane person's head.

I watch less and less every year it seems. When the cable or satellite people call me, I tell them I don't want to pay $6 an hour to watch TV. I DO get DVD's of old TV series from the library so I'm not all that immune I guess. :)

I do my dream job every weekend : lead singer in a rock band.

During the week, I have a professional career in science.

It's a pretty good split. If you had told me at ten that I'd be doing both of these things, I would have totally approved.

If pressed into an honest response, most of the 'dream jobbers' would want a job that started at 10 AM, broke for lunch from 11 AM to 1 PM and closed out the work day at 3 PM.

Sounds pretty good. but to tell you the truth, 10AM is kind of early. Can we make it 11-2?

With all of the money the government wastes, I always thought it would be fine if they gave me $200k a year to do nothing. Not everybody. Just me. It's only a blip on the budget, after all.

People need to find what they enjoy most, become good at it through schooling and/or experience, and pour themselves into it with joy. All of a sudden, work begins to take on a whole new light.

Actually, I realize now that I truly loved my WORK..it was the _jobs_ I hated. I still do love my work.

And I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone posts this, so I as well get it over with. Kidding aside, I have always loved and believed in this piece, at quoted from it extensively at my retirement party. It was met with silence. :

On Work

Kahlil Gibran

You work that you may keep pace with the earth and the soul of the earth.

For to be idle is to become a stranger unto the seasons, and to step out of life's procession, that marches in majesty and proud submission towards the infinite.

When you work you are a flute through whose heart the whispering of the hours turns to music.

Which of you would be a reed, dumb and silent, when all else sings together in unison?

Always you have been told that work is a curse and labour a misfortune.

But I say to you that when you work you fulfil a part of earth's furthest dream, assigned to you when that dream was born,

And in keeping yourself with labour you are in truth loving life,

And to love life through labour is to be intimate with life's inmost secret.

But if you in your pain call birth an affliction and the support of the flesh a curse written upon your brow, then I answer that naught but the sweat of your brow shall wash away that which is written.

You have been told also that life is darkness, and in your weariness you echo what was said by the weary.

And I say that life is indeed darkness save when there is urge, And all urge is blind save when there is knowledge,

And all knowledge is vain save when there is work,

And all work is empty save when there is love;

And when you work with love you bind yourself to yourself, and to one another, and to God.

And what is it to work with love?

It is to weave the cloth with threads drawn from your heart, even as if your beloved were to wear that cloth.

It is to build a house with affection, even as if your beloved were to dwell in that house.

It is to sow seeds with tenderness and reap the harvest with joy, even as if your beloved were to eat the fruit.

It is to charge all things you fashion with a breath of your own spirit, And to know that all the blessed dead are standing about you and watching.

Often have I heard you say, as if speaking in sleep, "He who works in marble, and finds the shape of his own soul in the stone, is nobler than he who ploughs the soil.

And he who seizes the rainbow to lay it on a cloth in the likeness of man, is more than he who makes the sandals for our feet."

But I say, not in sleep but in the overwakefulness of noontide, that the wind speaks not more sweetly to the giant oaks than to the least of all the blades of grass; And he alone is great who turns the voice of the wind into a song made sweeter by his own loving.

Work is love made visible.

And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of those who work with joy.

For if you bake bread with indifference, you bake a bitter bread that feeds but half man's hunger.

And if you grudge the crushing of the grapes, your grudge distils a poison in the wine.

And if you sing though as angels, and love not the singing, you muffle man's ears to the voices of the day and the voices of the night.

You Wrote: "Now I am an engineer

Years ago i couldn't even spell inginer now I are one ..."

That is a great list of accomplishments!

I helped build the B70
I helped put a man on the Moon,
I helped build Dams
I helped build Roads
I helped build entire cities and towns!

I worked where I wanted, I worked for whom I wanted and I received the renumeration I asked for.

Your mileage may vary, but I don't think I ever had a job.
