The main guy, I googled him up. He was an army brat that had failed to make anything of his life, knocked up his girlfriend, who then left him, was in bankruptcy and at age 24 decided to enlist, following in his dad's footsteps. "The thing I had promised myself I would never do.".

So basically I guess this is delayed adolescent rebellion on his part.
