Guiliani on Abortion: His Record Not as Bad as You Might Think
National Review ^ | January 22, 2007 | Deroy Murdock

Posted on 01/27/2007 3:06:21 PM PST by Senator Goldwater

As pro-lifers mark the 34th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, many wonder whether they could support Rudolph W. Giuliani for president despite his pro-choice views. While Giuliani’s statements on abortion make pro-lifers fret, they should find his record surprisingly reassuring.

“I don’t like abortion,” Giuliani said last November. “I don’t think abortion is a good thing. I think we ought to find some alternative to abortion, and that there ought to be as few as possible.”

But did Giuliani’s mayoral deeds match such words?

According to the state Office of Vital Statistics, total abortions performed in New York City between 1993 (just before Giuliani arrived) and 2001 (as he departed) fell from 103,997 to 86,466 — a 16.86 percent decrease. This upended a 10.32 percent increase over the course of the eight years before Giuliani, with 1985 witnessing 94,270 abortions.

What about Medicaid-financed abortions? Under Giuliani, such taxpayer-funded feticides dropped 22.85 percent, from 45,006 in 1993 to 34,722 in 2001.

The abortion ratio also slid from 890 terminations per 1,000 live births in 1993 to 767 in 2001, a 13.82 percent tail-off. This far outpaced the 2.84 percent reduction from 1985’s ratio of 916 to 1993’s 890. While abortions remained far more common in Gotham than across America (2001’s U.S. abortion ratio was 246), they diminished during Giuliani’s tenure, as they did nationally.

The Centers for Disease Control reports that U.S. abortions fell from 1,330,414 in 1993 to 853,485 in 2001, a 35.85 percent decrease. Professor New finds that 1993’s 1,001,769 abortions waned to 853,485 in 2001, a 14.8 percent fall-off.

“So, in percentage terms,” New adds, “the decline in abortions in New York City under Giuliani was greater than the national decline.”

Yeah, Rudy has some common sense on a lot of issues. I'm sorry to hear about the partial birth abortion position. Hey, it's possible he may mature on that. But he is pro gay rights whatever that means. When he left his wife, he stayed over at a gay friends's place for a while until he could pull it together.

Rudy is also indecisive and may not even run. He has more baggage than Mario Cuomo. Rumor is his wife is ready to unload on him via her liberal media friends. You can be sure she will get every little piece of dirt and then some other vengeful lies to them and it will be put promptly to the public.

After all, Rudy is running under the R and for that, he must be destroyed.

Abortion Fits GOP Philosophy, Says Giuliani

By Jeff McKay
CNS Correspondent
April 09, 2001

New York, N.Y. (CNSNews.com) - While the national Republican platform is decidedly pro-life and has been for the past two decades, the GOP mayor of the nation's largest city believes his party's philosophical underpinnings are more in tune with the pro-abortion point of view.

New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said favoring the availability of abortion is "more consistent with the philosophy of the Republican Party."

Giuliani made his eyebrow-raising remarks at an awards luncheon April 6 sponsored by the National Abortion Rights Action League in New York City, a leading abortion group.

[...Snip...]

Kelli Conlin, the executive director of the New York chapter of NARAL, applauded Giuliani's views. She called the mayor "a great advocate for us," and said it was "unfortunate the leadership of the GOP has moved into a direction where they want to implant government control on the lives of women and on reproductive freedom."

Although some of the state's top Republicans favor the availability of abortion - both Giuliani and Gov. George Pataki are supporters of abortion rights - their views on the issue are not shared by all in the New York GOP.

"Rudy Giuliani is not the poster child for the Republican Party. His values are completely out-of-step with the views of the GOP," said Lori Hougen, spokesperson for the New York chapter of the National Right to Life.

I'm told of how impressed some people are with Rudy's "resolve" after he saw nearly 3,000 people die in the attack on the WTC on 9/11. Yet, during his term in office as Mayor of NYC nearly 1,000,000 unborn children were slaughtered in that city alone. And the only resolve Rudy shows in the face of such a bloody holocaust is to support the continuance of it. He equates the butchery of pre-birth children with "freedom" and "choice." He even celebrates it with its strongest proponents - groups like NARAL - bragging of his strong disagreement with the vast majority of the Republican on trying to put an end to the slaughter that has killed over 40,000,000 babies since the Roe v. Wade legal atrocity.

It is said that Rudy is ready to take on the whole world in response to the deaths of 3,000 Americans in the WTC attack but he not only won't even lift a finger in response to the deaths of 40,000,000 American children - he wants the slaughter to continue unabated. He has even stated that he would willingly pay to have his own grandchild butchered by an abortionist if his daughter couldn't pay for it herself. And he even thinks that your tax money should be used to pay for the unborn children of poor women to be dismembered and sucked into a sink.

Yet, there is a massive propaganda effort occuring to sugar coat Giuliani's extreme liberal views, statements, and policies and Mayor of New York City. But it goes beyond softening his hardcore liberal views. The big lie is being told and told often that Giuliani is a conservative. Which he is NOT, by any sane definition of the word. That propaganda effort is seen in major magazines, newspapers, and right here on Free Republic.

Let there be no confusion. Giuliani is a liberal - one of the most liberal people in the Republican Party - and the MOST LIBERAL REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE ever. Would it be easier to ignore his liberal, anti-Republican platform views and support the current frontrunner in the Republican Primary? For some. But what is the RIGHT thing to do? Do you principles mean anything to you? Do the traditional principles of the Republican Party mean anything to you? We're well over a year outside of election day. Any one of the major candidates could be made into the GOP nominee. They just need YOUR support in the form of donations and work. Are we so fearful of a tough election fight with Hillary that we'll put up a candidate whose liberal views do not represent the views of the vast majority of the Republican Party? Do we surrender our conservative values for electoral expedience? And if Rudy is our nominee and he does win the election, what does it profit the Republican Party if we win but we lose our soul?

Maybe some people are right and the time isn't right for a hardcore conservative candidate. Fine. Maybe we could go with a moderate more in the mold of our current President. I'm very unhappy with a number of things that President Bush has done, but I would far prefer 4 to 8 more years of that than 4 to 8 years of a liberal like Giuliani. Pick a conservative candidate, or a more moderate candidate if you must. But supporting a liberal like Giuliani is an unconscionable choice for any self-respecting conservative Republican.

Nationwide, there was a decline in abortions while Giuliani was in office. However, the pro-abortion policies of the mayor reduced the decline of abortions in NYC to HALF of the decline seen in the rest of the country. (If he can take credit for a decline in abortions in NYC, then he would have to similarly take the blame for declining at only half the rate of the rest of the country.) The bottom line is that according to the New York Department of Health's Vital Records, during Giuliani's term as mayor he oversaw nearly 1,000,000 deaths of unborn children by abortion.

I'm with you!

As bad as our nominee may or may not be, look at what will happen under a Hillary/obama presidency.

That should scare the crap out of people!

I am pro life, but I can support Rudy given his stance on the WOT and I believe he will nominate strict constitutional judges.

So therefore, his personal opinion on abortion is moot.

The WOT is more important than anything in our life time and we need someone with the balls to stand up and fight!

We can worry about social issues after that.

Living in the NYC area, I know that I want a strong leader on the WOT, not some pansy liberal!!!!

Sorry for the rant, but lets use common sense there people!

“I don’t like abortion,” Giuliani said last November. “I don’t think abortion is a good thing. I think we ought to find some alternative to abortion, and that there ought to be as few as possible.”

This is almost PRECISELY what Hillary Clinton has said about abortion. I think I will look up the quote and compare. Not surprising since Giuliani and Clinton do not differ at all on the issue of abortion.

Giuliani is quite the extremist, in fact. He opposes banning partial birth abortion which is about the most barbaric form of murder imaginable. Even Tommy Daschle had enough moral fiber and humanity to vote for the ban.

Screw abortions, Rudy! Cut to the chase! We still have not discussed the 2nd amendment, and I know you wish to hell you didn't have to, but no way will you pull off a P.T. Barnum flimflam on me!
You might just win without me, good luck!
Until you get right with the Constitution, I am set to work my butt off, against you!

Yes, compromise is wonderful thing, isn't it?

So, to celebrate diversity, peace and compromise, I'm going to bake up a batch of brownies for all those Mitt, Rudy and Manchurian Candidate fans.

Those deeeelicious brownies will be made with only 1% - that's all - just 1% by dry ingredient weight of border colie poop that I just scraped up out of the kennel.

The perfect and just dessert for the 'can't we all just get along' crowd, dontcha think?

What? No takers. C'mon. It's just a LITTLE dog poop.

Bingo. They have no understanding of core issues. They want to 'make nice' to liberals. Can't be done.

~ Rudy supports big government Republicanism.
* Conservatives support limited government.

~ Rudy has supported gun control and an assault weapons ban.
* Conservatives oppose gun control and an assault weapons ban.

~ Rudy has supported abortion on demand and a ban on partial birth abortion.
* Conservatives oppose abortion on demand and support a ban on partial birth abortion.

~ Rudy has supported and even promoted special rights for homos.
* Conservatives oppose special rights for anyone.

~ Rudy supports liberal immigration reform, amnesty and a path to citizenship for illegals.
* Conservatives are opposed to liberal immigration reform, amnesty and a path to citizenship for illegals.

There is nothing conservative about Rudy Giuliani. Rudy`s major accomplishment upon leaving office as Mayor of NYCity was to reduce crime. The current liberal mayor of NYCity Mike Bloomberg has also reduced crime. Doesn't mean conservatives will vote for either Giuliani or Bloomberg to be POTUS. Only a moderate, centrist or liberal Republican could vote for Rudy. Unless you pull a "Vito Fossella", and sell out your conservative principles for the liberal bandwagon of Rudy Giuliani. Rudy`s given a lifetime of support to liberal policies and liberal causes, and that should be a turnoff to anyone who calls themselves a conservative.

Depends upon at what temp you bake the batter ... hot enough and the addition of poop will have no effect on brownies or even flavor.

He wouldn't. He would appoint strict de-constructionists right out of the worst communist led law schools.

On what do you base this ridiculous bit of wishful thinking? Please post for me one piece of evidence for this absurd assertion. And no, your distaste for all things Hillary (which I share) is not sufficient.

Giuliani doubled the # of cops and turned NYC into a virtual police state (a good thing).

He can also win, although maybe losing Congress isn't enough to make geniuses such as yourself realize that the survival of the republic is at stake.

Giuliani will hang em high.

The WOT is more important than anything in our life time and we need someone with the balls to stand up and fight!

I'm not so sure about that. In any case, I have serious reservations about the underlying political philosophy of a so-called "conservative" politician who comes down on the wrong side of the abortion issue.

There are approximately 1.3 million unborn babies killed in abortion clinics around the U.S. every year, which means this country basically carries out a 9/11 attack on itself about every 20 hours. No candidate of either political party who doesn't understand the magnitude of this issue is ever going to get my support.
