Honest Abe to go on trial - for racism

Daily Sun reports

Thursday, February 08, 2007

AURORA | The Community College of Aurora's professors will stage a mock trail that puts Abraham Lincoln on trial for racism at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the college's Fine Arts building at 16000 E. CentreTech Parkway.

The trial is free and open to the public. Based on his speeches and written documents, teams for the prosecution and the defense assembled from the Community College of Aurora's criminal justice program and will try Lincoln to determine whether he was a racist and how his beliefs and attitudes influenced the course of the Civil War, Reconstruction and post-war society.

Ditto. We're all guilty of it. I've actually never been to KY, but I would like to do so if I'm ever there.

Waste of time. Read
Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln
by Doris Kearns Goodwin
Tells you more about the politics of the Civil War than you probably ever suspected. And of course the politics precedes the military actions, for they determine the objectives and the limitations of the military actions.

All very well to belabor Lincoln for not being more militant against slavery; without the adherence to the Union of slaveholding border states the Union would almost certainly have failed to carry the day - and slavery would not only have continued where it was but would have continued to expand.

But was Lincoln a racist? Practically everyone in America was racist. What is certain is that those determined to sit in judgement of their ancestors are self righteous and arrogant. Their ancestors were what they themselves would have been had they lived in that time, with the same upbringing, education, and peer influences. A fact which the "liberal" cannot admit.

It's not the things that you don't know that really get you; it's the things you know that ain't so.

Ok, round two. Lincoln had two choices : let the South have it's "state rights" or keep the newly formed Union one. He did what he had to do to preserve the Union. He suspended Habeus Corpus-SO WHAT! This is the 1860's. He freed the slaves because he realized that you couldn't have one area of the country doing it's own thing because a house divide can not stand. Maybe you would have liked the South to prevail, I wouldn't have because the South could not have survived economically without the North's industry.

Don't forget that during this time most of the educated and productive resided in the North. In the North the culture was more modern and more cosmopolitan. It was also shown that the mass majority of the South was uneducated and ignorant. The few landowners and bankers and elites(military officers) that had slaves and benefited the most were just about the most human capital that came out of the South. Lincoln did what real leaders do. He did what he though was right and a Southern rebel assasinated him for it. Their is a lot of romantacizm coming from the South but with its slavery and it's narrow agricultural economy it was bound for death anyways.

If Lincoln is so bad who is your model president?

Yes. Too bad yanks still worship the man knowing full well what he did was wrong, in some situations unconstitutional, and in others outright criminal. Yet they deny those and make the mistaken claim that he cared much about slavery not to mention 'freed the slaves'.

This is a community college, not a high school. Do parents homeschool for college? I'm not trying to be cute or glib, that is a real question. Do parents homeschool beyond high school?

620,000 American Dead. More than all other American military conflicts combined. Nearly 500,000 American Wounded.

Drop in the bucket compared to the millions of slave that died going to the South.

9% Union and 12% Confederate POWs died in prison camps because Lincoln refused to exchange prisoners Imprisonment of over 14,000 civilians by military police for "alleged" crimes that never existed.

He refused exchange because the rebels didn't concider African American POW's equivient to redneck rebels. They got a taste of negro life, hey.
