Giuliani's Golden Ticket? [California Polls]
Claremont Institute ^ | 02/21/07 | Michael Brandon McClellan

Posted on 02/21/2007 11:03:00 AM PST by BunnySlippers

In a move to increase its relevance in the presidential selection process, the Golden State is set to jump up its primary from June of 2008 to February 5th, less than a year away.

This may benefit New York's presidential aspirants, and especially its Republican one.

Last week I noted Giuliani's electric support at the California Republican Party convention. A recent poll has resoundingly brought forth the same message. This morning, the Wall Street Journal's John Fund notes the following numbers:

With California moving its presidential primary to Feb. 5 of next year, what Golden State voters think about White House politics has actually begun to matter. A new poll of likely primary voters by San Diego-based Datamar, Inc. shows the two current frontrunners to be Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani. The poll shows Ms. Clinton with 34% of the vote, leading Barack Obama's 24% and John Edwards' 16%. Given Ms. Clinton's enormous name ID advantage, her lead is not compelling. On the GOP side, pundits were startled to see former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani with 41% support, John McCain with only 17% and Mitt Romney trailing with 11%.

It is early, and a great deal can happen in a year, but those are stunning numbers for the former Mayor. If present trends in California continue, the Golden State's primary move may just be Giuliani's golden ticket to the nomination.

Hillary is terrifying

I remember reading and posting on FR back in '98 during the impeachment hearings. Do people really want to chance going thru a Bill and Hill regime again?

"And the only people who will swift-boat Rudy are the turncoats in the GOP."

You must be either totally naive or completely stupid to think that Hillary Clinton won't resort to such actions.

The MSM seems to be focusing strictly on whether or not a Dem can win Florida or Ohio. They're assuming that all of the blue states in 2004 can't possibly be in danger in 2008.

I'd be more interesting to see Guliani's numbers in a General there......

From a practicle standpoint if Guliani puts Cali and NY into play, the dems are toast. If they actually have to spend money defending their strongholds, they have no way to remotely win the rest.

I know there are one topic voters out there, and I don't agree with the G man on many issues, but there is no doubt he knows how to govern, understands the war on terror, and has a pretty damned good record in matters of law and the courts.

The WOT is the only issue that can matter at this point, all others are moot if we lose this one... G Man understands this and understands VICTORY, not cowardice.

"If you plan to stay home, you are willfully forgetting who we run against my friend........"

Why do you think anyone will stay home? If a third party pro-life conservative runs, they will pull off enough of the GOP votes to give it to the Democrats, no matter who the Dem nominee may be. Friend.

Dick Morris is invariably wrong, I have not read such from anyone else, and I think you are wrong about this.

Hey....I am not yet a Rudy supporter. I am keeping powder dry, and listening. I think you might want to do the same.

As to our group of social conservatives just letting Hillary win, you don't grasp her negatives well enough yet in my opinion. The candidate we select will have to pull both major sides of the party together as well as pull in the I's. Whoever shows they do this the best will get my support and my vote.

For all of Bubba's acclaimed political skill (and not very strong opponents) he never could crack 50%. I think Kerry may have more charm than Hillary.

Hillary is so wooden. She has to be scripted since the real Hillary is a major turnoff.

She has been spending years trying to hide her real self from the public.

Rudy could definitely put NY in play but California would be much tougher given the huge Dem voter advantage there. Hillary would want to spend time and money in Florida...not having to run around defending PA, WI, or MI.
