Gun Remark Kills Outdoorsman's Career (WP)
The Washington Post ^ | 24 FEB 07 | Blaine Harden

SEATTLE - Modern hunters rarely become more famous than Jim Zumbo. A mustachioed, barrel-chested outdoors entrepreneur who lives in a log cabin near Yellowstone National Park, he has spent much of his life writing for prominent outdoors magazines, delivering lectures across the country and starring in cable TV shows about big-game hunting in the West.

Zumbo's fame, however, has turned to black-bordered infamy within America's gun culture -- and his multimedia success has come undone. It all happened in the past week, after he publicly criticized the use of military-style assault rifles by hunters, especially those gunning for prairie dogs.

"The reaction -- from tens of thousands of owners of assault rifles across the country"

How many here think there are just tens of thousands of these semi-auto or self loading rifles. It in more like tens of millions. Out of 280 million guns owned millions are of the type. I mean a technology that is over 100 years old. SIGH!!!!!!!!!!

Things are different now.

I personally know literally dozens of guys who had no interest in guns of ANY kind until Clinton said they couldn't have them. Now they are 2A hardliners and black rifle addicts.

NOT ALL GUNOWNERS ARE ON THE RIGHT. Something people need to understand. Do not let the media propaganda educate you. Many gun owners are Democrats. Many. 80% of gun owners do not hunt.

That was the great RKBA division of '34, I believe. That was the last time there was real success at spalling off one group of firearms owners and declaring their arms a 'device of evil'.

Not true 1986 was the last time that full autos were cut off. Republican President Demosh!t Kongress - Kind of like what we have now.

Notice that when the Democrats are in power, their first priority is push for the destruction of our second amendment rights. When the Republicans are in power they do nothing to roll back the infringements put in by the democrats and eagerly enforced by the traitors in the federal bureaucracy.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

There is the text and I am having a hard time seeing "overthrow the government" in those words. I know about some of the associated writings of the Founders such as "the tree of liberty requires blood", etc. but I don't see this Amendment as the source for government overthrow. It is, however, definitely not about hunting and that is the crux of the Zumbo matter.

I met one of those guys in 1994 at a local range. He said that he never owned a weapon in his life but when the feds wanted to take AR's, hi-cap magazines and semi-auto shotguns away from him as a law-abiding citizen, he went out and bought all three. I laughed for weeks, but was damn glad that some folks still have brains.

I never owned a semi-automatic rifle until Clinton became our president and moved congress to pass the AWB. I ran up my credit cards buying rifles and high-capacity magazines. I also made many aware of the ramifications of the AWB and the slippery downslope that follows.

I also personally signed up over three dozen NRA members in the mid-90's, about a 1/3 are still members and are now hard-core. Now that the dim's have power AND are clamoring for more gun-laws, I am going the get the NRA 1-800 # handy to sign up new members. The only thing these idiot politicians understand are millions of pissed off one-issue voters.

"Somewhere along the line we lost our rights to bear whatever arms we need to overthrow our government."

Probably all started back when they banned cannons.

"So if the intent of the 2nd amendment was to keep government at bay through the threat of force and a bloody revolution every 200 years, how is that possible today?"

Do you really think the American military will ever agree to take on 80 million American firearm owners? Who would they bomb with their sophisticated weapons of mass destruction? Their own liberal infested cities? That'll create a lot of friends.

As long as there are firearms widely distributed amongst the population, the threat of force of a bloody revolution can exist. As long as that threat exists, the government is still basically responsible to answer to the people.

This is why there is such a strong apprehension to gun banning of any kind. It reduces the potential threat.

If you have been following Ted Nugent's forum, Zumbo finally came out with an acceptable apology on the 3rd try.

"Thank you all for letting me speak. Yes, I know the 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting and hunting guns, and yes, I promise you I am now dedicated to educate all shooters that we must all stick together regardless of our gun choices, and also tolerate the firearms others may choose to use if they are dissimilar to ours. I will do everything I can, within my power as a journalist and public speaker, to protect the 2nd Amendment and America's gun owners."

http://nugeboard.tednugent.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/287127.html

Quotation by prominent gun writer in a private forum:

Well, in the bigger picture, what has happened to Zumbo and now Petzal serves as a signal to Congress, as that gomer wrote in the Washington Post article.

If we, as a community, are willing to butcher giants like Zumbo and Petzal in public, it may give some of those on Capitol Hill pause before they try to take on gun rights. "We have awakened a sleeping giant, and filled him with a terrible resolve."

The timing of this is remarkable. Carolyn McCarthy introduced HR 1022 the other day to renew and expand the AWB. and make it permanent. Days later, the EBR community (Evil Black Rifle) is energized as they have not been before. Even if it was only a lynch party, they may now be fired up enough to turn their attention toward their own congressional representatives.

We can only hope. To that end. Zumbo probably DID do us all a favor.

I learned some really interesting things in watching the various forums, the main thing being that the companies that sell black rifles must be distributing history books because the guys with those rifles are the ones who "get it" about the 2nd Amendment.

New Lexicon:

FUDD - Hunters who don't understand the 2nd Amendment.
ARF - Someone who owns an "EBR". Contraction of AR-Fifteen.
EBR - Evil black rifle
GOMER - Haven't figured this one out yet. Seems to be the opposite
of a FUDD. May be a reference to Gomer Pyle.

Zumbo's replacement is David Petzal who is now getting "Zumboed":

WOW!!! This is looking a lot like a lib-site. What’s his name is an idiot, you’re a jerk, and who the hell are you to be thinking anything?

In my humble opinion, there have been a bunch of idiots, jerks, and people not thinking – writing a bunch of crap here.

So who among you actually hunts prairie dogs? Do you machinegun them? They are big and fat, they’re slow and easy targets. A 22 or a slingshot would the weapon of choice.

The man apologized. His apology should be considered. And Ted Nugent is an honorable man – more than I can say for a bunch of you.

Huh?????

I guess they think there's a big enough crowd of blueblood Republicrat hunters and only a few 'assault weapons' owners (e.g. semiautomatic owners) and ne'er the two shall meet and overlap.

No it is attempt to draw a line of departure as to value, say a collection of beautiful per 64 model 70 Winchesters as to the value of a plastic stock ak for example.

However, you can make book on the fact that as soon as the democrats get one they will come after the other.

Awfully elitist attitude to assume to tell us idiots what is the proper kind of firearm for prairie dogs. You sound just like Zumbo.

Also you have to ask yourself

Which side will the military be on. Not all will be on one side.

"Here's how it is. Tho a nice man, there was a maniacally out of touch Jim Zumbo right into Sunday 2-18-07. He got coldcocked by his friends & enemies alike, rightly so, for his outrageously insane antigun statements, most offensively calling for a ban & daring to reference our beloved rifles to terrorists. I cannot imagine a dumber, more egregious mistake against his own. Then Monday 2-19 arose, I & others intensely educated Jim to his 1-ignorance, 2-insane antigun mindset, 3-how perfect all guns are, 4-that the 2nd Amendment has absolutely nothing to do with hunting. On all counts, Jim Zumbo, after a long, illustrious 67 year life & blindfolded gun career, now stands ABSOLUTELY with 2nd Amendment ABSOLUTISTS & not only deserves our forgiveness, he & we all need to take advantage of his horrific mistake & let all gunners who are so stupid to think the way he did prior to 2-18 that they are deadass wrong & out & out antigun AND THAT ALL OF EM MUST UPGRADE as Jim has done. This is a grand "Spotlight the Cockroach" moment my friends. Use it wisely & frwd motion will be ours. Thankyou all for your input, now let us UPGRADE on, shall we!"

A post from The Nuge. I always wished The Nuge would run for some public office, he has a way with words.

Hunting prairie dogs with assault weapons? How is that a sport?

1. What's an assault weapon? (Or, more accurately, what weapon is not an "assault weapon"?)

2. What's the problem with hunting prairie dogs? It's not as if they're in short supply or are beneficial in any way (other than as a food-chain member)

3. If you'd read with some effort, you'd realize that the idea the author is proposing is preposterous (as well as false, emotion-laden, and intentionally deceptive). Spraying bullets at small, fast targets who hide underground would simply be wasting money and making noise. Why spend $40 in ammo in 6 seconds just to scare away the varmint hordes and ruin the hunt for everyone? The entire point of the exercise is one-shot-one-kill (and don't terrify the rest into hiding for the day). If you just want to make holes in the dirt and hear loud noises, you don't need prairie dogs to do so. There are plenty of places to go shooting at fake targets that don't run away.

In fact, I would dare venture to say, that a very large portion of the military comes from rural America, with family and friends who own firearms. I don't think they will mindlessly follow an order to shoot their own brethren.
