:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Senior Taliban leader held in Pakistan
-Full Story-

Pakistani security forces have captured a high-ranking Taliban leader in the southwestern city of Quetta, a senior security official and Taliban sources said late Thursday

The capture of Mullah Obaidullah Akhund marked the first Pakistan arrest of a senior leader of the Islamist militia since it was driven from power in Afghanistan in 2001 when thousands of its fighters fled into Pakistan.

The security official and Taliban sources said Akhund, the third most senior member of the Taliban's 10-member leadership council, was arrested late on Monday, hours after a surprise visit to Pakistan by U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney.

Maybe it is orange. It's kind of hard to distinguish the color on the news that scrolls across the bottom of the TV.

I just pray a lot whenever they're up in the air. Most of the time, they don't even tell me when they're going someplace dangerous. They don't want me to worry.

"Bombs found on Lufthansa airliner bound to Tehran"
Fri, 09 Mar 2007 14:02:12

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A Lufthansa airliner bound for Tehran had to be grounded Tuesday for hours at Frankfurt's Rhein-Main Airport after German security sources received bomb threat alerts.

The spokesman for the Federal Police at Frankfurt's airport, Klaus Ludwig, announced on Thursday that the flight "was halted only moments before its scheduled take-off for Tehran at 6:00 p.m. local time after the Lufthansa call-center in Dublin, South Ireland, received an alert."

After passengers were evacuated from the plane and their luggage and cargo were unloaded, explosive experts boarded the aircraft, he added. But he claimed they had not found anything.

The plane resumed its flight to Tehran at 2.37 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to Ludwig.

Lufthansa spokesman, Thomas Jachnow, also confirmed the incident, saying "Following a security alert, Lufthansa flight 600 was diverted from the main runway shortly before take-off and was evacuated. "

It, however, has emerged that explosive experts of the Federal Police found and defused two time-delay bombs - one inside the airplane door and another planted in one of the engine compartments.

German security sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Iran's Mehr News Agency (MNA) that the Federal Police had arrested three Arab suspects, one man and two women, in this regard."

Since I handle all the travel arrangements for our company's business, I must know where they are going. (sometimes I wish I didn't) Cindy, I really appreciate all your travel advisories. I do check them all the time.

Palladin, the only thing I can suggest is that you do as I do......trust in the Lord and His infinite wisdom.....let your loved ones know about the travel advisories.......and pray. A great comfort comes from that.

Free Republic (and especially the Threat Matrix) is a wonderful resource. (thank you, Cindy)

"Thailand insurgency may have links to the broader world of radical Islam"
Gosh! Really? From AP:

THANNAM THIP, Thailand: A shallow river, deep jungles and an old 20-kilometer (12-mile) wall mark the divide not just between Thailand and Malaysia but between Southeast Asia's Muslim and Buddhist worlds.

This ragged stretch of border is being viewed by some as a potential front in the Muslim insurgency wracking southern Thailand, mysterious in its goals and undeterred either by government crackdowns or by peace overtures.

People on both sides of the border share ethnicity, language and religion — Islam. Muslim-run soup restaurants on the Malaysian side are suspected of being funding sources for the rebels, and this has become an irritant in relations between two countries that are mainstays of the Southeast Asian alliance.

[...]

Islamic radicals around the world are increasingly setting their sights on the insurgency. An Arab Web site appeared in January, dedicated exclusively to southern Thailand and believed the first of its kind. Couched in Islamic rhetoric, the site backs independence for southern Thais.

[...]

"Basically the southern Thailand conflict is becoming more regionalized. But we are at the very early stage of it," says Rohan Gunaratna, who heads the International Center for Political Violence and Terrorism Research in Singapore and wrote "Inside al-Qaida: Global Network of Terror." Islamic militancy is spreading in Southeast Asia, he says, and "What is happening in Thailand will not be an exception."

Others disagree, likening the insurgency to the Muslim uprising in Indonesia's Aceh province, which shunned foreign help and was resolved with U.N. mediation.

"They are fighting for a separate state so they don't want one which is going to be run by outsiders," says a Western official in Bangkok who is knowledgeable about anti-terrorism efforts and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The insurgents, according to the Thai military, number 3,000 to 5,000, with some 10,000 to 12,000 sympathizers out of a Muslim population of 3 million in the southernmost provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani which border Malaysia. They are secretive, brutal, effective. "We don't know when or where they will attack next," says Col. Wichai Thongdaeng, an army spokesman in the south.

An independent sultanate until it was merged into Thailand a century ago, the southern provinces have seen rebellions come and go. In the latest, which began in early 2004, the rebels have torched schools, bombed banks, beheaded some 25 people and shot teachers, policemen, government officials and just ordinary citizens. More than half the victims have been Muslims suspected of collaborating with authorities — teachers, civil servants, policemen.

In one recent incident, says army Lt. Jenkila Somboon, three Muslim rubber tappers were shot to death because their village was getting too friendly with the soldiers.

[...]

"If you go to work, we will kill you cruelly. We will wait for you 24 hours a day, follow you wherever you go," said one recent leaflet obtained by The AP, ordering Buddhists in one area to leave within three days. It's not known whether they left, but the insurgency has already displaced hundreds of villagers.

International Risk, a Hong Kong-based consultancy, calls the insurgency the world's "new terrorism front line," but its shadowy nature accounts in part for the differing assessments of outside involvement.

Thank each and every one of you more than words can say.

The funeral is tomorrow. My sister is barely audible when I speak to her. Her daughter is being watched 24/7 because she is so despondent. She heard her daughter screaming but could not reach her because of flames in the house.

I'm beginning to wonder if anything else can go wrong. Our beloved cat goes in for surgery to save her life tomorrow morning and someone in Texas has duplicated my charge account number and has (until yesterday) been charging up a storm with it. Spent part of the day making a police report on it for fraud. This is one week I'd much rather forget.

My heart breaks as I read about your sister's daughter and granddaughter...

I am sure your niece will be haunted forever about hearing her daughter's cries for help.

May God bring comfort and strength to them...help take some of the crushing pain off of them..

God bless you, also MD, as you go through the difficulties in your own life.

Islamic extremists infiltrate Oxford

The report said that Prof Glees would warn the Association of University Chief Security Officers (AUCSO) next month that the disbanded extremist group Al-Muhajiroun claimed to have infiltrated “the main campuses such as Cambridge, Oxford, the London School of Economics and Imperial College”. His speech on “radicalism in universities” also states that at its peak before the July 7 bombings in 2005, Al-Muhajiroun had a presence at “more than 48 universities and faculties”, and Omar Bakri Mohammed, the group’s founder, claims it is “still operational” in several campuses.

Washington State investigating cow deaths at dairy

Department spokesman Jason Kelly says the investigation by State Veterinarian Dr. Leonard Eldridge is still trying to determine what killed 50 to 60 cows in the past several months.

Kelly says investigators previously had been at the dairy near Addy, about 75 miles north of Spokane and about 50 miles south of the Canadian border. No milk had been sold or distributed there since December. He says the investigation is ongoing.

Thousands of food service workers in eateries across Los Angeles might be vaccinated for hepatitis A because of a series of outbreaks of the disease.

Bless you for your compassion. I'm signing off for the night. Have been scrubbing floors, furiously cleaning to get my mind off today's realities. My niece will not allow anyone to hug her or get close to her. I'm guessing she's going to need professional help to get her through this. She saved her infant son and for that our family is very thankful.

It goes to show everyone should have a plan for escape during a fire or heavy smoke and their children and/or grandchildren should practice what to do - no age is too young IMHO. Again, bless you for your kind thoughts. MD
