gotta be Alexandria Chase. Never even heard of her until I read Vidal's LINCOLN. I believe there is a photograph of her presenting the Medal of Honor to Arthur MacArthur FWIW

Which book was that in? I would really expect Catton to know better.
To: Paisan
Vidal researched "Lincoln" very well. The Kate Chase/William Sprague characters are very accurate - as is the description of their unhappy relationship.
To: linda_22003
I agree. I think his best effort however, was Burr.
Say what you will about Vidal, his scholarship, in these historical efforts, is impeccable.

The whole series is on my shelf - Burr, Lincoln, 1876, Empire - I should revisit them. Definitely his best work, I think.

Yeah, it's odd how liberals are so concerned about book banning - well, when it's porn - but they're the first to scream when it's their ox being gored...

If there is anyone here who hasn't read this book, do! It's a fantastic book, but be prepared, it is shocking in the way it shows exactly how all this came to be a movement. While we were all oblivious.

Back in 1958 or so, I got a children's book of Civil War short biographies by Bruce Catton. They included John Pelham and Chevy Chase, the attack on the Ablemarle, Ulric Dahlgren's raid, the Libby prison escape. Catton did not overwhelm his readers with detail.

All,
SafeLibraries.org discussed this back when it happened. Now we will have to update what we have written:
We wrote:
Truth is Stranger Than Fiction - where we said, among other things,
So pushing porn on children is perfectly acceptable but a librarian recommending college students read conservative books, thereby making professors feel 'unsafe,' is sexual harassment. Does this not outrage you totally?"

has filed a defamation lawsuit against the accusing faculty members.Awesome. Fight back. Liberals are too used to people with values rolling over and playing dead when they are attacked. I hope that you win enough off of them to retire and start funding more lawsuits like this.

Jones then took the further step of sending a private e-mail to Mr. Savages supervisor, Library Director Beth Burns, questioning the integrity of the library staff and implicitly attacking Mr. Savage's professionalism. Jones also sent an e-mail to the campus Dean, threatening to look for other work and explicitly denigrating Mr. Savage's professionalism in suggesting the book. Jones then sent another e-mail to the Committee attacking Mr. Savage's academic opinions.Typical hate filled liberal with WAY too much time on his hands. This is how they get their way - shrill, dishonest, attacks until superiors cave and give them their way.

THE NYTimes, the newspaper of record, the guardian of free speech, the newspaper that will assign multiple reporters to expose CIA and government secrets...will never report this story. (or if they do, it will be hidden, below the fold, on page D18).

You know, I never really wanted much from life. Growing up, I just thought I would be so happy to just marry and raise a family. Go to the beach,, build a tree house for the kids,, live and let live. In my nature,, I really don't like politics at all. I don't want to be the one to speak out about anything. I don't want to make waves,, cause trouble,, get noticed that much. I remember wondering when I was younger, while looking through those Time Life books,, the WWII ones,, lots of black and white photos of the war,, I used to wonder how a nation could actually have a Hitler rise to power.
I never thought in a million years I would be looking at my own nation and wondering seriously if it could happen here.
But here it is. The barbarians have already come through the gate and are pounding down the walls of our homes. There really is no longer a choice about whether or not to "get involved." We have to be political.
