Poll: Bloomberg Would Make Better President Than Giuliani

Last Edited: Wednesday, 14 Mar 2007, 12:42 PM EDT Created: Wednesday, 14 Mar 2007, 12:42 PM EDT

Political Coverage on MyFoxNY.com By SARA KUGLER Associated Press Writer NEW YORK -- A poll released Wednesday shows that New York voters believe Michael Bloomberg is a better mayor than Rudy Giuliani and would make a better president than his Republican predecessor. Forty-six percent of the registered voters surveyed by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute said they think Bloomberg is a better mayor than Giuliani, and the same percentage believes the Republican mayor would be more effective as president. Thirty-one percent believe Giuliani would make a better president than Bloomberg.

"It's very flattering but I don't think that Rudy's worried about this," Bloomberg said when asked about the poll. "I wish him and all the candidates well. The more candidates we have, the better, but I am not one of those candidates."

Giuliani, who led the city through the aftermath of Sept. 11, has emerged as the front-runner for the 2008 GOP nomination in national polls. Bloomberg has insisted he is not running, but speculation persists.

Asked this week again about the rumors that he may jump into the race, Bloomberg promised to serve his full term through 2009 but admitted the presidential buzz serves him well because it elevates his profile and gives him more sway.

The poll surveyed 1,261 registered voters from March 6-12 and has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

"America's Mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, doesn't score all that well where he really was the mayor," said Maurice Carroll, director of the polling institute. "New Yorkers think Bloomberg is a better mayor than Giuliani -- and how will this go over on the campaign trail?"

Only 16 percent of those surveyed view Giuliani as a better mayor than Bloomberg, while 34 percent said the two men were even in that regard.

The poll also asked the respondents about two issues that had recently put Bloomberg at odds with some New Yorkers:

--When his administration revamped the city's school bus routes midyear, complicating families' daily routines and upsetting some children who had to walk farther or wait longer, he said complainers were making a big fuss over nothing.

--And last month, drivers citywide were incredulous that parking rules were upheld during a snowstorm, preventing them from moving their cars, which resulted in thousands of tickets. The mayor at first said they were just being dramatic, but later apologized and dismissed the tickets.

The poll found that a majority of voters disapprove of the way he handled those situations, but his approval rating did not take much of a hit: 73 percent still give him high marks.

The survey did not ask respondents about another recent bump in the road for Bloomberg, the fact that he went ahead with a planned one-day trip to Miami hours after several children and a woman died in the city's worst fire in 17 years.

If polled, New Yorkers would probably say Karl Marx would make a better president than either Bloomberg or Giuliani.

Blomie, Giuliani. I would not vote for either one. Why bother? They are liberal.

Yeah but Rudy looks better in a dress. LOL!

Really, its not a secret that many New Yorkers didn't like Rudy all that much and his ratings before 9/11 were in te dumper.

He's only continuing RINO Rudy's policy of targeting law-abiding citizens and legal gun dealers.

If you can't see the difference between the two approaches, then so be it.

Bloomberg went into 'crusader' mode, took it into undercover ops outside his jurisdiction.....etc.

This guy has a heavy-duty hatred of guns. Look at the $$ he's spent on his current rampage.

Thank Heaven the courts have trimmed his wings a bit.

Doesn't sound like Rudy has much chance in New York after all.

Here's a hint about the TRUE Rudy:

He was in Indianapolis last week, and bragged of his accomplishments, saying that his policies were even being continued by "another Republican".

Rudy (along with other treasures like Daly) was instrumental in starting this ball rolling. His actions are just taking their (il)logical course with Bloomie.

Rudy's no friend of gun owners and that's the last thing we need with a DemonRAT congress.

Just get Fred Thompson in there, and he will blow BOTH of these men out of the water!

I agree. I just wonder where are all those Juliebots who seem to live and die by all these polls? We're supposed to pay attention to every single poll that comes out according to them.

Where are they anyway?

By these polls, they should dump Giuliani and hop on the Bloomberg Express.

This poll is so silly that anyone who sees a trend here about anything other than NY is a dingbat state who wants Hil as Prez, is simply adelpated. Rudy G is a Pub and Mike whoever is not. Period.

Let's see how high Bloomberg's kite flies in red-state country. My guess, crash and burn...

Oh please please please.........I am only on my first cup of coffee and I don't want to throw it up!

ANY mention of that Blooming Idiot makes me want to toss my cookies.  I know he is the Little Hitler Mayor of New York City, but I keep praying his stink doesn't rub off onto Maine.  Maine has enough lawmakers just LIKE Bloomberg.  Fist pounding control freaks.

God Save Us All!!

I'm just worried about Corin and FairOpinion. I was so sure they'd be right here to help us understand these polls and help us decide if everyone should abandon Giuliani for Bloomberg.

Maine has enough lawmakers just LIKE Bloomberg. Fist pounding control freaks.

We've got plenty of 'em in the country. I worry more about the calm power freaks, a bunch of no-good do-gooders.

NYers are idiots (and I am one of them). Crime is skyrocketing in the city, thanks to the little putz Bloomberg slashing police patrols.

Hop on the Bloomberg Express?

Ut, oh, that means social conservatives riding the RINO boxcar to Indoctrination Camp.
