3/15 - Missouri House Votes to Reject Real ID Requirements - 3/15/2007
Jefferson City - The Missouri House this week passed a resolution objecting to the Federal Real ID Act of 2005. The legislation (HCR 20), sponsored by Rep. Jim Guest, R-King City, was approved by a vote of 146-4.

The federal act was part of a homeland security bill signed by President Bush in 2005 and is scheduled to go into effect May 2008. If implemented as scheduled, it would require you to show a federally approved identification card when getting on board an airplane, opening a bank account, collecting Social Security checks and doing almost any kind of business with the federal government.

“The scary part of this is the states are required to keep a data base of all this information plus all the data it takes to get your driver’s license,” said Rep. Guest. “This data will be shared by all states and our federal government which means any employee in any department of motor vehicles can have access to your information. You talk about security risks and identity theft. This just heightens the possibility of it.”

Because of his concerns about the act, Rep. Guest formed a coalition of lawmakers from 34 states to file bills that oppose or protest Real ID. Several states have passed legislation and many more have active bills against Real ID.

HCR 20 now moves to the Senate for consideration.

For the record, I thought the Real ID Act was a good idea, until my Representative's office set me straight. Representative Jim Guest is my MO House Representative.

Better to deport illegal aliens, close the borders, and restrict future immigration than tamp down on ordinary Americans.

True. But whether they do any of that or not, they need to stop restricting our civil liberties.

First things first. But reading the polls here would suggest that sheep want to be protected by the shepherd of big, dominating government.

Sure, why should we have to use ID's when dealing with the federal government.

Word alone should be good enough, right?

Yeah, especially when it's so hard to tell us apart now. Better get right on it. After all, our drivers' licenses and passports are so easy to forge. It's a cottage industry, ya know. A real boon to illegal immigrants, since nothing much else is stopping them but the need for a stolen social security number.

Answer the question.

Should no ID be required when dealing with the federal government (on banking matters, SSI, voting(state government), etc), or should the best most fool-proof ID be required?

The Federal Government the Founder's set up didn't require ID. It is only through the invention of entitlements and an oppressive tax system is such an ID necessitated.

Now, further to your point, MO does have an ID law (Show-Me proof) now that makes us prove who we are to get our licenses renewed. We object Fed's mandating it and mangaing the database. Each state doing things its own way, remember that?

And, I forgot, and absolute refusal to secure the borders.

I named several types of ID that used to be adequate before 30 years of massive illegal immigration. No ID is fool-proof. How much money are you willing to spend? The Real-ID legislation is starting to threaten state budgets. How much money can the federal government dictate that the states spend?

Why not just make each citizen get a passport? That doesn't sound onerous. And I wouldn't mind showing it to vote. Heck, I'd be happy if I had to show more ID to vote than to get a freaking fishing license.

Hey, requiring passports could even encourage us to travel more. A kind of multicultural education.

That has always been my point on this, especially with entitlements such as SSI. Seems to me that's where our rights are ignored. We don't complain about SSI, yet we do complain about required federal ID's for such.

LOL!

That said, congress does have the power to tax. The best possible ID's should be used for that.

And states should require the best ID possible for voting.

Absolutely.

Required passports for all border crossings into the country will help. I believe that will be enforced soon.

The passport thing is already being enforced at the borders, as it should be. National Sales tax or flat tax alleviates the need for ID in that regard as well.

First off the Federal government does not own the banks so any ID needed by the bank should be a company policy rather than a government policy. Bank of america was allowing credit card issuance without a social security card. Voting is a state function so a state issued ID card is all that is necessary. No federal ID card because elections are state operated.

The most fool proof ID is the one that is not displayed at every tom dick and harry checkpoint. Each and every time a ID is displayed opens the door for potential fraud.
Putting othe social security number on checks as a means of identification was totally stupid and the requirement wasn't stoped until the numbers became criminal enterprise.

Or would the most foolproof ID be a microchip implant that is scanned at random intervals to make sure you are where you are supposed to be according to the federal government?
Missouri just revamped their drivers licenses a few years back and they are working just fine. Since we have been US residents for all of our lives (most of us anyhow) the feds shouldn't be worried about tracking us when they can't even track expired visas, work permits, and student permits granted to foreigners. Last time I noticed, it was foreigners who crashed the WTC and declared jihad on America. Americans and their state of residence can keep track of citizens just fine. The feds need to focus on what the feds do best, which in actuality is very little.
