"Let the civil lawsuits begin!"

After the criminal investigation of Nifong is over...and hopefully ends in an indictment.

"I hope those kids sue and win every dime the state has."

Yes I hope so too. All these kids wanted was to enjoy their college life and play lacrosse for Puke, I mean Duke. All the money in the world can't get that back for them.

"How about refunding all the money that the families spent defending their innocent family members ... with interest"

That would be "treble damages".

How do you figure Duke University is responsible for the legal bills? Durham County, yes. Duke, no.

I personally think that any suit against Duke itself has little chance of winning. Clear case against Nifong personally and Durham County, but that's probably where it ends.

I highly doubt the accuser is sued or that any Lax player that wasn't charged sues anyone.

Duke is going to have a very difficult time getting donations from any alumni in the future,

That would make sense.

Duke is going to be paying the lacrosse guys for its disgusting and unprofessional behavior for a very long time.

Especially if the "80 professors" can somehow offload their personal future liabilities for libel onto the university and deflect it from themselves.

Ouch. Political correctness hurts.

I expect he thought all along that he'd lose, but that he'd be able to ride it to an election, and that there'd be no repercussions or that he could drop it at any time....something like that.

Instead he created a firestorm that he couldn't escape from.

Mike Liefong: "Ooops, my boo-boo...... can I have a do-over, please?"

This vicious fraud Liefong should be disbarred, jailed for a looonnnggg time, and stripped of all his assets. Leave him about where he tried to leave these innocent kids, starting over with a ruined reputation and no prospects.

Efficiency would suggest they have the process servers ready to go after the hearing.

Yes, I'm sure the civil suits have already been written.

Great news indeed. Now...let's bring charges agains the accuser and then Nifong. Neither one of them should walk away from this without their punishment in this case. Both of them should be taken to court and made to pay for their abhorrent accusations of innocent young men. Justice is for all from what I understand. Now let's see REAL JUSTICE for the accuser and Nifong. I'll be waiting but I won't be holding my breath.

I completely disagree.

Duke closed the lacrosse program for the entire year, lending credence that others on the team were involved.

You'd be a very poor advocate for those who've been harmed. I would sue each and every single individual involved in this travesty, no matter what the cost.

You're right, it's a start, but it would have to get somewhere like 60% for it to really hurt a university.

Nifong will not be charged. His disbarment is all you can hope for.

I dislike Nifong as much as the next guy. I expect him to be disbarred. Duke has had the consequences that I expected them to experience-- close scrutiny from donors, alumni and prospective students.

When it comes to the accuser, I have a hard time working up much anger because I feel so much pity. She is a drug-troubled professional sex worker. There is no punishment, short of the cruel and unusual, that is worse than her current life. Prison is a far better, less violent, healthier and kinder place than where she is now. I don't really expect someone selling their bodies to strangers for anal sex to show much (if any) moral strength when it comes to other things.

Justice seems to demand consequences for the damage done to these guys who deserved, at most, some sort of misdemeanor charge for rowdiness. My moral sense points at Duke and the State of North Carolina as the chief culprits and I imagine that any conversations about damages will point at those two targets.

If your outrage at the accusation demands that Mangum suffer, I guess I understand that. In her case though, my own anger is preempted by horror and pity.

If Duke's numbers fall even modestly, when other comparable institutions continue to see double digit increases in applications (e.g. Northwestern was up something like 18% this year), it's relative selectivity will drop. Also, what the numbers alone don't clarify is whether the drop is across the board or (as I suspect) concentrated at the upper end of the applicant pool, since those candidates will have the most equivalent alternatives. Oh, well, Duke is unlikely ever to retreat to the obscurity in which it wallowed in the days Dick Nixon went to the law school....

Well you do get to watch the Left make total and absolute fools of themselves. That is worth something.

While you could certainly argue that, it will still be hard to show actual damage to any individual simply because they were on the team. Secondly, I suspect most have probably moved on and may not want to even pursue a lawsuit.

Hope the city is ready for a massive payout considering that the DA has destroyed the future professional reputations of these players.
