Hagel: Some see impeachment as option
By HOPE YEN, Associated Press Writer 22 minutes ago
With his go-it-alone approach on Iraq, President Bush is flouting Congress and the public, so angering lawmakers that some consider impeachment an option over his war policy, a senator from Bush's own party said Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Senate's No. 2 Republican leader harshly criticized House Democrats for setting an "artificial date" for withdrawing troops from Iraq and said he believes Republicans have enough votes to prevent passage of a similar bill in the Senate.
"We need to put that kind of decision in the hands of our commanders who are there on the ground with the men and women," said Sen. Trent Lott (news, bio, voting record), R-Miss. "For Congress to impose an artificial date of any kind is totally irresponsible."
GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel (news, bio, voting record) of Nebraska, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a frequent critic of the war, stopped short of calling for Bush's impeachment. But he made clear that some lawmakers viewed that as an option should Bush choose to push ahead despite public sentiment against the war.
"Any president who says, I don't care, or I will not respond to what the people of this country are saying about Iraq or anything else, or I don't care what the Congress does, I am going to proceed if a president really believes that, then there are what I was pointing out, there are ways to deal with that," said Hagel, who is considering a 2008 presidential run.

Norm Coleman is another Senator that reaps the givings of the RNC.
That doesn't mean that I am going to vote for him in '08.
The RNC doesn't dictate personal thought, only a motivation.
I have stifled my donations to the RNC and will continue to stifle it until I feel comfortable in promoting it again.
My personal thought as to how I vote trumps what the RNC conveys to me.
Sadly enough most voters don't tote my attitude, however the RNC should not be your focus of blame for without support they are nothing. /rant off
'Ground' Chuck in '08
weasel faced maggot and that's just on Sunday talk shows..
I agree. We need to start dumping these RINOs immediately. Conservatives need to unite and get rid of people like Specter and Hagel in the Senate primaries and Giuliani in the presidential primary. We can't afford to let the liberals control both major parties.
With friends like Hagel, who needs Democrats?
Unfortunately, Hagel is exactly the type of Republican the RNC drools over and throws $ at. Remember Chaffee and the tons of $ they wasted on that moron in both the primary and general in '06?
Maybe we should start small since apparently conservatives count for nothing anymore in the Republican party since the libs and pseudo-Dems have taken control. Perhaps we should target Hagel in his next election, find a suitable Nebraskan to challenge him, make certain the person has plenty of funds, and make it OUR business to see that he loses.
Impeachment is not the proper action for a Congress that simply disagrees with a President. Read the Constitution, Mr. Hagel. It says high crimes and misdemeanors. It doesn't say "because the Congress disagrees with the President's foreign policy".
Senator Hagel, sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.
Many people may see recall as an option with regard to senators.
WTF were the good people of Nebraska thinking when they sent him to DC? Of course I'm one to talk being from VA, having just elected Webb.
Hagel - at it again.
How in the world did a man like Hagel manage to win a GOP election?
He thinks no one in America supports Pres. Bush? He thinks we are all really democrats and want him to lead the democrat assault on our GOP administration?
What a bloomin' idiot.
Senator Hagel: The president is the cic. He does not set national policy by public opinion polls. He does not need to consult with you Senator when he acts as cic. Imagine Hagel if he were president and some flunky told him he had to do something he disliked because the public opinion polls told him he had to. Someone needs to impeach Hagel.
Well, just proves he had too much ambition in the first place.
Apparently Hagel only cares about what is good for Hagel.
Out of the same rag bag as McCain.
Proof-positive about Useful Idiot syndrome being alive and well...
"I also hope that those that contribute to the GOP take note as well.
Those poor fools keep calling/mailing me asking for money that'll go to support the likes of Hagel."
You sir are exactly correct!!! I will never again support anyone monetarily just because of the "R" beside their name. I love it when they call me. As soon as I mention a name like Hagel, they assure me that he doesn't speak for the entire Republican party. I then suggest that they remove the "R" beside his name...then THEY hang up on me!
Iran? Not likely.
It's a damn shame when the Democrat Senator gets more respect than the Republican one of the same state from conservatives.
Dude, it'll never happen. The RNC will rush to Hagel's aid like it did to Chaffee and Spector, while pulling the rug out from under the conservative challenger.
The organization and its Congressional affiliates aren't worth supporting. Contribute directly to individual candidates, on their website.
There is no chance of getting the 2/3 majority in the Senate to remove Bush from office if he is impeached by the House.
What webs some spin.....
